3.4 Notebook Results Analysis
The best writing performances with an USB 2.0 are achieved with a FAT32 filesystem, with excellent results with medium size files (figure 8).
Also with an USB 2.0 connection the NTFS filesystem is the best choice especially with small size files (figure 9).
Extraordinary is the removing speed achieved with filesystem of NTFS type (figure 10).
Using this flash drive with USB 2.0 interface, we got similar compared indexes by all filesystems: however FAT16 was the best winner with 512kb and 64Mb files while FAT32 had better performances with 64kb and 256kb files (figure 11).
3.5 Global Analysis
The best protections are archived with a FAT 16 filesystem (that is used by default by Crucial for the Gizmos init). The NTFS filesystem is surely the less suitable, but it can archive good results with Read operation on small files, anyway this kind of filesystem have some interesting fetures like access control and on-the fly compression on folder, single file or whole device.
What is most interesting about these kinds of devices is that they all tend to write much slower than they read. They also ramp up much more slowly than they do in the read tests. Some drives did not hit their maximum write speed until writing 64MB files.
4.0 Conclusions
The last Gizmo graph says that if you want obtain the max performances with this storage device you must use an USB 2.0 controller. The bottom graph really is that the Gizmo on USB 2.0 is much faster than the Gizmo on USB 1.1 controller.
On the other hand, the Crucial Gizmo! Pen Drive represents, in general, an excellent product on the overcrowded Pen Drive market. Like memory, choosing a USB flash hard drive all comes down to price. At $75USD for 1GB, the Crucial Gizmo is pretty good deal. It's backed by Crucial's excellent warranty, (few manufacturers for their drives offers, 2-year, 3-year warranties, Crucial for this product offers a Lifetime warranty!). if you are tired of run between two pc with a floppy to copy yours files, or carry a CD your favorite utilities, its the time to try a
Gizmo!.
