Great news for 3dfx owners ...

3Dfx Voodoo5 5500 PLX is a Pci-E bridged card !
Great performance on benchs.

Thanks to PLX technology.

Thanks for the great work of this site and Sfft team.
Happy to share this.

More with PexTurbo ...

I'll be doing this
but I need to get a pci voodoo5500 first

V4500 Pci works also with the bridge.

important question: do all the FSAA/SLI modes work properly (on the 5500)? how big is the performance gain?

actually,I would be more interested to see whether you can run a voodoo2 this way..

I Shared here because I know there are skilled voodoo people.

Not cheap : 113 €

Does anyone try the pci-express modification ?

m14radu

looks very nice !
the performance is also very good!

can you bench the card in the PCI slot, and then in the PCI-Express to see the differences ?

:)

Thank you m14radu. I read your very interesting topics 2 or 3 years ago.
Your mod on agp4x, for example.
For more info, follow the link in my first post.
On 3dmarks the PLX was 7% beyond the PCI in the same conditions.
In game, maybe 10% beyond.
Performance increase also with the frequency of the cpu.
Would be interesting to test with 3,0 ghz cpu.
I try the mod to keep my V5500's on further configurations
as Sandy or Ivy bridge.
Best regards to the website team and sfft.

m14radu

thanks mate.
i will restart the projekt as soon as i get some time and resources ;)

nice work from your side too ;)

A video to give an idea of the performances 'in game'

No emulation with 3danalyze or soft like that.
Only 3 test of the 3dmark 2000

3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PLX with Pci-Express tuning in Bios
Even compared to the best 3dfx V5 6000 Agp,
the Pci-express bridged V5 5500 appears like a fierce opponent.

m14radu

nice score mate !
I must admit that i get the same score ( around 3700 points ) with my v5 6000 on a socket A platform !
what kind of optimization did you in bios ? Or did you overclock the card ?
please give us more details :)
Follow your dreams !

jix-reggio

Thank you, I will give you the details.
Here, I tried to amplify the effects of using the Pci-Express bridge by increasing carefully the Pci-express clock from 100 Mhz to higher values.
Remember that, in the previous 3dm2001 screen (3479), the use of a Pci-Express bridge leads to a 20% boost on triangles and point sprite, respectively from 2,9 to 3,5 and from 0,5 to 0,6.
Comparing V5500 Agp and V5500 Pci results in these items, I thought some V5500 Pci ressources, unbound from Pci bus priority management, were employed in more accurate geometric calculation. My idea was to manage a further exploration of this unemployed V5500 Pci potential, acting on a single parameter, the Pci-E clock.
Clock of the V5500 was kept @187 Mhz (appears as Texture fillrate @374 MTexel / 2).
Pci-Express was slighly increased to 112 Mhz and I gave some more juice to the CPU (From 2650 to 2750 Mhz)  to help deeper computation.
Visible results, as you can see on the 3dm2001 screen caught with AmigaMerlin 3.1 on XP, is a 10% boost on triangles up to 3,8 and 1,4, leading to a slight boost on FPS in every 'game demo' sequence. The same test with Sfft 1.6 on W7 showed  a 15% boost on triangles and also a point sprite 10%  increase.
So, according with my little empirical knowledge on this issue, I agree with the opinion that the SFFT 1.6 were optimized to exploit unemployed ressources on  'geometric calculation'.  I would like to have SFFT feed-back on these excellent SFFT 1.6.
