Title: Voodoo 2 SLI - what 2D-Card?
Post by: Burn.E on 11 June 2006, 20:50:55
Hi guys,
i'm planning to set up another old-school-gaming-pc (as we call it), but i don`'t know which 2D-Card should be combined with the 3D-SLI-Part. Do you have any suggestions for me that would fit into the configuration:
MoBo: K7M-RM - ASUS
CPU: AMD Athlon 700MHz (hope to get 1,0 GHz)
RAM: As much as the Board takes
Soundcard: some old Creative-Card
Suggestions to improve the configuration are welcome.
Thx
Burn.E

Well, not just any 2D card should be used. You wouldn't want to use a old 2MB Trident card since some of the stuff in games is done in 2D. Matrox always had good 2D graphics so ps47 is totally correct recommending a g400. I have a 32MB Diamond Viper 770 Ultra paired up my 24MB Diamond Monster II SLI setup.
Here is my Glide system just in case you want to look over some of the parts I used. Most of the parts are original from when I ran that system as my main gaming rig when it was new.

  -Glide System-
Asus P3B-F Intel 440BX chipset
Intel PIII 650
128 Mb PC100 Corsair SDRAM
40 Gb Hitachi ATA100 7200 RPM HD
Mitsumi 48X CD-ROM
Windows 98se
Diamond Viper 770 Ultra 32Mb AGP
Diamond Monster 3D II 24Mb SLI
Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold
MS SideWinder Precision Pro Joystick
US Robotics 56K V.90 Fax/Modem w/voice
KTI KF-230TX 10/100 NIC
Linksys WUSB54G USB Wireless Network Adaptor

Thanks a lot!
I was wondering if I can also use a Banshee or another 3Dfx 2D/3D-Combo-Card. Which card will do the 3D-work, when an Banshee is combined with Voodoo2s?

banshee and voodoo3 are not going to work.but voodoo4/5 will (after some tinkering)..non-3dfx card is STRONGLY recommended for a voodoo2 SLI setup.

Hi guys!

I need a little help.
I'm building a 3Dfx game PC. I have two Diamond Monster 3D II with 12MB each for SLI. Now I need a good 2D card.

So, what 2D card do you recommend except the Matrox 400G?

Regarding to the last post, here is something, someone quoted from the old 3Dfx website:

"Will Voodoo Banshee work with a Voodoo2?

Voodoo Banshee will work with a Voodoo2, but not in SLI mode. Voodoo Banshee will be the primary device and Voodoo2 will be the secondary device for the serious 3D gaming experience. For the ultimate setup, a system can support a Voodoo Banshee as the primary graphic device and two Voodoo2 boards connected in SLI mode. This way the user will have the fastest 2D acceleration coupled with renown Voodoo2 3D capabilities."

Moreover I spoke to something who was a freak in the 3Dfx era. He said that a Banshee plus Voodoo2 SLI is the best he can think of. He talked about one game which uses both 3D engine, the one of the banshee and the one of the voodoo2. Don't know the name of the game but if you're interested I could find it out.

I used in my 3dfx system some 2d cards:

matrox millenium I 2mb pci
ati mach64 vt 2mb pci
matrox millenium II 8mb agp
ati rage pro turbo 4mb agp2x

I didn't notice difference..but that must be because it was a k6-2 500..go for some matrox...they are good cards...millenium II is good card :)

as for the audio card,if the board have isas, go for a awe32,it is an awesome card..I did not believe what I was earing when I plugged my logitech x530 5.1 setup on them..never heard a sound so pure...[ok bass is ****ty but that is because the card is 2.0 only],and they are damm cheap..get the non value one,you can fit some simms there for midis in games and use the aweamp plugin...wich takes use of that ram...
if it only has pci,try finding a Hercules Fortissimo II or III,pretty good drivers and lighter than creatives, and with a lot of quality...if you can't go for a creative live that can use youp pax modded drivers..
good luck

Thanks for your reply!

I use the Soundblaster Live. I think this is okay, right? Or would you really recommend the AWE32 instead?

I used the millenium with the latest drivers on matrox site..and upgrade it to the latest bios too :)
it depends on wich games you run...and wich speakers...but for me awe32 rox...old games have sometimes effects for those cards...what is your live card?value or what?they are good cards too..

My soundcard is a Live Player, if I think correctly. I've searched for AWE32 and have found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Labs_Model_Numbers
Which AWE32 do you have?

yup there are..and they are automatic (+-),mine is the AWE32 PnP (IDE)    CT3670 but stick with the live player,it is a very good card and you can use youp pax modded drivers allowing a better quality and using eax without bugs I think
