Title: PCI-E x8 to PCI-X @66MHz 3Dfx PROJECT
Post by: voodoo5k6 on 09 August 2011, 12:40:23
Hello everybody,

Amazing news !!!

I love 3dfx cards.

I am researching new adaptor on web to help the 3dfx community with all news motherboards. I've found one Supermicro adaptor :

- Supermicro RSC-RR1UE-AXL adaptor
- PCI-E 8x Extender cable
- Voodoo 5 5500 PCI
- Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4
- Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 (8M Cache, 2.40 GHz)

(hardware at default)

(This adaptor is compatible with all motherboards PCI-E 16x/8x slot)
(This adaptor does not need to be modded)

Honestly I don't understand what would be the benefits using this adaptor.

Voodoo5 is 66 MHz PCI compliance device. So for newer motherboards a good PCI2PCI-e 1x adaptor would be more than enough, since the results between the latter and this solution are comparable.

I don't know how much it costs, but Supermicro's devices are not cheap.

It is not comfortable at all for normal use.

My two cents.

@goriath :

PCI-X (133/100/66/33 MHz) is a very good slot for all Voodoo pci cards ( not modded ) and Voodoo 5 5500 agp ( + agp2pci adaptor ).
The benchmark is very good with 3dmark2001se look my topic with V5500 pci on PCI-X slot.(3dmark2001se : 4697 points ( o/c 189 Mhz ))
With PcietoPci adaptor, it's difficult to have more than 4697 marks.

What is the point?

I know well that the PCI-X slots are perfectly suitable for using Voodoo5 PCI cards; in most cases they are enough for all situations. So, actually, a good motherboard equipped of PCI-X slots is the deal and there wouldn't be reasons to buy any sort of adaptor.

But usually motherboards that have PCI-X slots are not exactly mainstream products; they are used for high-end professional hardware and are expensive.

So here it comes the PCI2PCI-e adaptors; they allow using Voodoo5 PCI in newer motherboards, specially mainstream boards. They are cheap and  every user can afford one. If the PCI2PCI-e adaptor can work @66MHz, you haven't to speculate more on performances because is the best case scenario.

I want to point it out you reached that score @66 MHz but in 16bit mode; than you compared that score with the PCI2PCI-e 16bit results when it probably ran @33MHz only because of the issue on the PEX8112.

Last but not least; when the 3400/3500 points are reached in 32bit mode, a handful difference of points could be referred to VGA's drivers, motherboard chipset's drivers and/or the efficiency of the motherboard chipset that manage the PCI BUS devices; there were few motherboard's chipset with good control over the PCI BUS during the AGP time, because hardware and software developers focused their efforts in the AGP optimizations. Today it's the same with the PCI-e standard.

BTW, if you really care about 3dMark2001 16bit mode, could someone run a 16bit test with Voodoo5 PCI + PCI2PCI-e adaptor capable of 66MHz, please? Would be the final word.

@goriath :

When I've got 3400 marks, my v5500 is at 166 Mhz.

When I put 186 mhz on my voodoo 5500 pci ,the marks don't increase ?
Why ?

With PcietoPCi adaptor and Pcie8xtoPciX adaptor too.

When you run such old cards in so powerful system, the VGA's clock rate barely affects performance; this because the bandwidth is the limit.

When i run Voodoo 5 6000 agp card with agp2pci adaptor and i increase frequency , marks on 3dmark2011 increase ,so why ?

Very good news !
[:p]
Please try the voodoo5 6000 with agp2pci adapter to see if this new adapter is better :)

Anyway, the adapter is very nice !

I hope that our PLX adapter would run @66Mhz soon :D
As goriath stated the supermicro components are not cheap and the PLX solution is the ceapest one :) ....how much did u pay for the adapter ?

PCI-E 8x to PCI-X adaptor :

V5500 pci at 180 mhz
Intel Q6600 at 2,4 ghz :

(For o/c voodoo 5500 pci card you need to use VSA100 OC ver.1.00)

Assuming that the 66MHz-capable adaptor by Supermicro was really running  @66MHz when you tried, you are speaking of Voodoo5 6000, I mean VSA-100 Quad SLI... So in this case any overclock would affects performances a bit more. BTW, I guess we are speaking of a really little gain...

However I would remember that we are comparing each other a ton of different hardware among:

- Voodoo5 6000 AGP + AGP2PCI (kurouto shikou adapter)
- Voodoo5 5500 PCI + AGP2PCI          "
- Voodoo5 5500 PCI + PCI2PCI-e 1x (Startech adapter with Pericom bridge)
- Voodoo5 5500 PCI + PCI2PCI-e 1x (adapter with PLX PEX8112 bridge)
- Voodoo5 5500 PCI + PCI2PCI-e 8x (Supermicro's adapter)

- In different motherboards, under different hardware and software environments

To get it out making comparisons is near to impossible and useless IMHO.

My cards :

Voodoo 5 5500 PCI
Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
Voodoo 5 6000 AGP

My adaptors :

AGP2PCI (kurouto shikou adapter)
PCI2PCI-e 1x (Startech adapter with Pericom bridge)
PCI2PCI-e 1x (adapter with PLX PEX8112 bridge)
PCI2PCI-e 8x (Supermicro's adapter)

I can test all you want.

:) very soon Goriath.

Thanks in advance

This adapter is not a bad option. Price is more or less like a pci2pcie adapter and V4/V5 family can run 66MHz even in any motherboard. You only need a PCIe 8/16x slot.

pci2pcie is an excellent option but at the moment it needs a mod via HW to enable 66MHz. About isolating PIN49b it helps but voodoo5k6 tried it an had problems with his moded adapter, black screen, lock up, so on...
This week I will have a V5-5500 pci for testing with my mod pci2pcie adapter and I will test it with different drivers and differents combination.

Anyway, very good work  Michel!

Again. Have no sense compare the two adaptor since the Pericom not-modded works @33MHz.

I suppose osckhar will give a good feedback with the Pericom working @66MHz + Voodoo5 5500 PCI. I am waiting for his result.

P.S.: I guess you are using latest SFFT drivers, but when post a bencmark, would be nice if you was more detailed about software anvironment (drivers used and whatever).

P.P.S.: Are you able to remove the small heatsink and give as a photo shoot of the bridge used on the supermicro adapter?

@m14radu : supermicro adaptor at 66 mhz is better than pericom and plx 8112 adaptor ( 33 mhz )@with voodoo 5 6000.

so this are the values with the adapters running @66Mhz, right ?

Do u have a link ?

L.E.
@ Michel: I look on the result that you get with the voodoo5 6000 ( 4849 points on page 2 ).
You performed only the Half of the tests, only the "game test" ...the rest are with "N/A".
Sprite points for example is also "N/A".. this influence the final result.
Can you please run the default benchmark with all tests ?

@voodoo5k6 : can you please give us more details about the behaviour of the PERICOM adapter ?

I see that you finally manage to run 3DMark2001...
