Title: Midnight club 2 has directx 9 error with AM3.0
Post by: amp_man on 08 September 2003, 21:29:24
i heard somewhere that Amigamerlin 3.0 (btw thanks Amigamerlin and the whole team) was supposed to have directx 9 support, so I've been hanging onto midnight club 2, which I bought before i found out it required dx9 and I was going to return it. Does AM 3.0 have full directx 9 support, or is it only compliance like the Voodoolizer 1.05.00 drivers?  And if anyone can tell me exactly how to make this game work, it would be awesome.

I'm gonna quote you just in case you decide to edit your crap. You're really consistent when it comes to making yourself look bad. Full dx9 support and full dx9 compliance is the same thing. Yes, the Amigas are dx9 compatible, but they're not compiant. The R3xx and the NV3x chips are fully supported by dx9, i.e. PS/VS 2.0 . The Voodoo 5 is bearly a dx6 card. It's a dx5 card to be exact. You might wanna try using 3danalyze,
http://www.tommti-systems.de/start.html
to try getting this game to work. It most probably requires HW TnL. And no, Geometry Assist will not work (https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ezboard.com%2Fintl%2Faenglish%2Fimages%2Femoticons%2Flaugh.gif&hash=b6f5dbfc7271c2fffe303da9709b5f253789db31)
And I don't think they'll let you return it, cd copying and all...

lecram, you just dont stop, do you? when i said compliance, i meant that directx9 will recognize the card, but games using directx9 will not run or will run only when using a directx 8.7 or 7 emulator, for lack of a better term, like 3d-analyze. now, getting back to the subject, i reinstalled directx 9 and midnight club 2 will now start up and allow me into the menu, but whenever i try to run a race or change the video settigs, it will crash. does anyone know how to remedy this?

that would be perhaps easier for people if you write what this game needs or/and if you have a link  ;)

terribly sorry i thought the title pretty much gave it away. from the game readme file:
QuoteMinimum Hardware Requirements

800 MHz Intel Pentium III or 800 MHz AMD Athlon
or 1.2GHz Intel Celeron or 1.2 GHz AMD Duron processor
   128 MB of RAM
4 speed CD / DVD drive
1400 MB of free hard disk space
32 MB video card with DirectX 9.0 compatible drivers
      ("GeForce2"/"Radeon 8500" or better)
   Sound Card
   Keyboard
   Mouse
This game also requires 32bpp color, so i have turned on the "Force 32bpp Rendering" option in the 3dfx tools. My problem is that when the game goes to render cars (im not sure about other 3d objects), it just plain closes (to the desktop). i have tried some of the options in 3d analyze, but i havent had any luck so far.

btw, the place i bought it from will allow you to return games for store credit for 14 days after the date of purchase. and lecram, the jokes on you, im using AM 3.0 so Geo assist aint available (just MMX and 3DNOW):D

You still don't get it do you? That option is USELESS!!! It won't help you any bit in that game. Like I said before, use 3da.

And, you ever hear of sarcasm?

i guess i stated that incorrectly: i have tried nearly every option in "3da" as you call it, and have tried many combonations of options, without any luck so far.

okay, I am not Black_out and i dont know what gives you that impression. do you think everyone who disagrees with you (or blantently tells you that you're wrong) is the same person? Anyways, i can see why cpdubal changed his name - he was tired of you following him around and harrasing him at every opportunity! I'm looking for help with a game, not a nim-witted thirteen-year-old like lecram to make dumb suggestions without even reading my post, where it states that I've already tried it. If you think you can help me to get midnight club 2 running, then please, post. If you're just looking to fight, I will put my email address in my info and you can send it there. You two (and myself with these responses) are wasting valuable forum space and moderator's time. Please, take it elsewhere or just drop it

EDIT: lecram, before you go accusing me of making some major change by editing my post, it's just because i noticed a few spelling and grammer errors, something you appear to know very little about, IMOHO

There was some discussion of this on the x3dfx forums:
http://pub43.ezboard.com/fx3dfxfrm2.showMessage?topicID=3057.topic

Basically saying that it is compatible with DirectX 9 but you can't get any 3D acceleration from it. I have searched the 'net for answers but found jack other than suggestions to use the force 32 Bit rendering, but I don't know what good that will really do.

Looks like we need someone from the AmigaMerlin team to fill us in on the whole DirectX9 thing, as I would like to know as well.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Last thing I will say about the situation(s) getting outta hand, yeah I changed my ID for the very reasons amp_man said, to the T. And a certain someone (lecram) drove me a little nutty with getting on my back and all I wanted was a peacfull conversation. So I figured I'd see how he liked it, gave it back, unfortunatley that got me banned for a bit. Sorry to anyone who's read this crud so far.[V] So, that is where I will leave that topic at. I will not fill up the forum anymore with garbage relating to this.

Thanks Black_Out for the effort (and an actually useful post, it's the first one for this topic! even if it is disappointing). I'm about ready to give up on this whole 3dfx ****

Amp_man

If you have two system, do what I do -- run one with a Radeon (or in my case a geforce - soon to change!) and the other with your 3Dfx board - that way what one system can't run the other can.

Otherwise I'd ask one of the driver programmers to see if this is solvable, I'd hate to hear that you tossed your 3Dfx card --- though I can understand becuase it's been a pain in the ass getting stuff to work correctly 1/2 the time ever since 3Dfx took a dive inthe crapper.

I have four systems (not all set up) but none of my other systems meet the minimum requirements. I will NEVER toss the 3dfx card, i'm consiering building a new system anyways, this one has a couple issues that would cost too much to screw around with, but i don't have the cash and i really wanna play this game i was over to a friend's house the other day and it looked awesome on his PS2.

Cool.:D

Yeah -- it certainly has been a pain in the ass when it comes to the new stuff - I gues then only thing that I can suggest is to run GLide based games as well as DirectX 7 (and below), and OpenGL 1.2 (and below) games on your 3Dfx system and run the new stuff on an Nvidia or ATI card that will run it decently (or at ll for that matter).

At least untill the AmigaMerlin team can find a way to provide some workaround for these issues via newer driver sets in the future, which I have a feeling, given enough time that just may happen.

Okay, thanks for the help guys, but still no luck. I'm ordering a new video card right now, that should hopefully fix this issue.
