Title: Voodoo 2 Benchmarking!
Post by: Teh_Yabby on 30 December 2005, 07:37:23
Hey all,

I was wondering im new to this forum but i have always been a lover of 3dfx, oh yes i can rerember the first day my dad brought home a 3dfx card it was a Creative 3d blaster Voodoo 2 8mb, Still the same thrill of playing Wing Commander Prophecy and Battlezone, they are great games!

Anyways the point of my topic was i could start benchmarking all my 3dfx cards, i have lots of them about 4x voodoo 1's around 5 or 6 voodoo 2's i recently brought a SLI couple off ebay, i soon will have a Voodoo 3 3000, so yeh if you guys could give us a nice list of benchmarking programs that will work with Voodoo 1's and Voodoo 2's that would be awesome!

Regards Yabby! ("(O.o)")RAR!!!! [:p]

Try some Unreal engine based games, like Unreal, Unreal Tournament or even Rune to run it with Glide. Direct3D benching is a little difficult to do on Voodoo2, so I'd recommend Win 98 ... There you could test Max Payne, for example.

Greetings from Germany,
Raff

Hey,

Thanks for the reply mate!
Iam currently running Windows 98SE basically for better support in old games like Battlezone and Wing Commander, Im gonna get Freespace 2 going tonight maybe download Unreal Tournament, I ran 3dmark 99 and it got 2805 marks which aint bad considering SLI Voodoo 2's get 3500 or something, I will SLI some up tommorow sometime and send in some benchy's

Nice scores although 3dmark2001 isn't a good benchmark for a Voodoo2,
because with a Voodoo2 is more like a CPU benchmark, because it is very CPU dependant.
It would be better to have some 3Dmark99 MAX scores over here for some DirectX scores. And UT for Glide for instance, at falconfly there having a big 3Dmark 2001se competition, could be nice to start something with the Voodoo2.

i did that with 3dmark99 too..but I don't remeber where I put the screenshots..someday i'll do it again...
well it was a good idea to start a "competition" with voodoo 2 and 3dmark99...for example..4 v2 sli the default would be 1024x768x16 double buffer etc..and for single v2..800x600x16 and double buffer too..it is only an idea..

The problem is that the Voodoo2 has a stupid bug in 3dmark 99 max,
You'll have to run it 10-15 times to get high numbers because the first run with the FPS game is crap....
I suggest we'd use another benchmark, we could use Glide.
Quake2 or if it works better 3Dmark2000.

A Competition sounds great, Umm any max CPU speed or anything can it be done in our regular PC's, The programs i have are, 3dmark 99,00,01 and the rest of them i dont think they will run on a V2 i might give them a try some time but i would think it would be ugly.

I have Currently got 2x Magic 2 Voodoo 2's, im pretty sure they run 93MHZ stock, i have them running at 105MHZ.

Regards.

But still a Unreal Tournament benchmark would be nice too....
Well just do the lot, and the Voodoo2 cards (in SLI) run lots of stuff from the year 2000 almost everything from that time.

Nice scores :D. My highest V2 SLI score with 3dmark 99 MAX was 7000.
at the default 800x600 resolution. I suggest we use 1024x768 as the default score OK???? This way it is less cpu depandant.
I will rebuild my old system in the weekend. So I will have a decent V2 SLI system. I am using an Pentium MMX 250mhz (100mhz fsb) atm, so it's bottlenecked  by the slow CPU.

wtf...7000??!? put some benches with the mmx too :D

And it was stable I lett all tests run 12 times.
I may reach 7200 with a little tweaking here and there.
Whell I know that I scored ~1500+ 3dmarks and the cpu scored 1724 cpu marks. I have some time the upcming weekend to put the V2 SLI in my KT333 system. BTW how fast is your PCI clockspeed Skinnie?
Because I think that it could give you some improvements.
And offcourse if it is stable enough you can overclock your voodoo 2 SLI towards 105mhz or 110mhz without big problems.

my system is all stok..so the pci clockspeed is 33mhz right?

Probably....... in 98% of the cases it is.

Well, you can't because :
- you're using XP
- you have 2 V2's in Sli
- 3dmark is a D3D test
- the only driver which allows for the V2 a support for D3D under the Win2k kernel is here :
http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1514
but it doesn't support the Sli in D3D.

The best choice for 3DMark 2001/2000/1999 with 2 V2's in Sli, would be Win9x.

So I'm interesting about Quantum3D Mercury it's four Obsidian 200SBi cards, total memory volume is 96Mb. I want to se on any tests with this card, may be smb give me a link. Especially interesting results in 3DMark 01, Unreal Tournament, UT2003.

Hey, how did you run 3Dmark 2k1 on the voodoos? On my machine, I'm not allowed to select them (they are in SLI), only the primary display (R8500)...

Thanks,

Blackmagic Voodoo2 12mb SLI @ 90mhz, FastVoodoo2 4.6, 3dMark99 MAX

5274 3d Marks
21673 CPU 3d marks

800x600x16 Triple Buffering

AMD Athlon "Barton" 1.1ghz @ 100/200mhz fsb, VIA KT133A Chipset
512meg ram at 133mhz
Win98/DX9

So no overclocking, Optimized BIOS settings, current processor is unstable at 266 so thats why is only at 200mhz fsb

this looks like fun i will try this on my V2sli setup when i get home tomorrow. think i will get som prity good scores. its on a 3ghz 1024mb ram setup running xp with missmatched V2 sli's,  under voodoomage drivers. (ps , im also able to run WOWtbc on this setup also check my other posts for images also got Ut2004 running on v2sli in opengl mode looking mutch better then ut2004 on v3 in directx framerate is still an issue , WOW in running on a low 4 fps in 1024*768 sli mode but only in a near 1fps on 1 card but its not fully tweak'd yeat i think i can get atleast 7 - 10 fps on 2 cards )
