Hello,

First fo all I must say I use another model of pcie2pci adapter . With this adapter you can enable 66MHz:

  • Unsolder PIN49B directly on PCIE2PCI.
  • Isolate directly the PIN49B on V5-5500 PCI

Here some pictures:

MOD ADAPTER @66MHz:

ISOLATE V5-PCI @66MHz

Here some test using 3DMark2001SE:

  • V5 PCI pcie2pci - 3450Points
  • V5 AGP pcie2pci+agp2pci - 3361Points
  • V5 PCI pci-x slot - 3356Points
  • V5 AGP agp2pci+pci-x slot - 3356
  • V5 PCI pci slot - 2871Points

All the settings to default. No overclock or tweeks.

Note- Important to use Beta Kool driver if you use SFFT driver the performance is low because this core has a bug when adapter (sli bridge) is used and SLI configuration does not work well.

Oscar.

done, pin is unsolder.
now i test again :)

L.E. the same results. Card still operates @33MHz.

@Radu,

Install WinXP and uses Beta Kool driver with agp2pci adapter bug fixed and let me know. I am sure your adapter will work ok.

Remember- Core used on SFFT driver has a bug when your are using any chip bridge. This bug were fixed by Kool in such realease driver. Without any adapter chip bridge SFFT works ok but when adapter is used then the card is penalized in the performance.

Next step would be if SFFT wants to fix such bug in his amazing driver. He only needs to talk with Kool.

you have a link for the driver ?

this one ? https://www.3dfxzone.it/news/reader.php?objid=5280

Yupe!

Yes, isolate only that PIN.

Nope, I have other version the adapter but try it with beta Kool driver with agp2pci adapter bug fixed and let me know but this driver only  works under WinXP/2K.

Finally we get it :)

You isolated Pin 49 A and B ?

now is interesting what performance increase is to achieve with the v56k, using both adapters running @66MHz :D

Damn...i need an agp2pci adapter [:p]

Only isolate PIN49B.

Did you test it?

What drives do you use?

Good Work Osckhar !

You gave me interesting info. So, good work you as well!

Isolating directly the V5-5500 PCI forces  pcie2pci adapter to work to 66MHz.

If we don't want to isolate the V5. Then we should mod the pcie2pci directly in the PIN49 to force it works 66MHz.

Finally, we have managed to get the adapter works for our loved 3Dfx cards.

We can try: isolate pin 49, on adapter or on the voodoo, or both !

Let's wait for a confirmation from Koolsmokey :)

BTW: I am interested why the voodoo is working in a PCI-X slot....the pin 49 is also conected to the ground, and therefore the voodoo should work @33MHz.

GOOD NEWS!

Adapter works to 66MHz if you isolate the PIN49 directly on V5-5500 PCI.

I tested it and now I got 3700 points using pcie2pci adapter!

Nice info Radu!

Question- So, why not to ISOLATE the PIN49 (M66EN) directly in the V5-5500 PCI.

If I remember right once  I plugged the agp2pci adapter Aida showed 66MHz not supported as well.

I got (always using 32Bits).

V5-5500 pci on PCI-x = 3700Points
V5-5500 pci on pci slot 33Mhz = 3100Points
V5-5500 pci using pcie2pci adapter = 3100Points

Hi at all,

I did some test.

Using pcie2pci adapter the card works to 33MHz. Same score that using the card in a PCI slot 33MHz. Even, PCIe2PCI+AGP2PCI+v5-5500AGP adapter I got same score than using V5-5500 pci in a pci slot.

Chip  bridge used in the adapter is 66MHz compatible. So, the question is if adapter needs to be modified like agp2pci adapter (but I have check pinout and there is not info about MHz speed) or pcie2pci adapter needs to be plugged in a real pci-e 1x. My motherboard only has 16x.

Another problem can be about IRQ and some components use same IRQ and when an IRQ is shared for others HW then speed down.

this is the PLX chip used:

( Picture from feinripp @voodooalert.de )

Here:
http://www.voodooalert.de/board/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=18303

Then it is 66MHz compatible.

If adapter uses chip PLX 8112 bridge it is 66MHz compatible.

QuoteI would be surprised that none of the power users here
can explain how a V5500 works @66 mhz on pci.
(for example when a V5500 Mac is plugged on a Apple mainboard).
I would also be very interested.

Because V5-5500 agp is not a true agp. It does not has support agp texture and it runs to AGP1x (266Mb/s), same like PCI vers. So, the models agp/pci are able to run 66MHz. AGP1x=PCI66

  • The PCI version you need to find a motherboard with PCI-x slot to run 66MHz.
  • The AGP version you only need an agp socket to run 66MHz.

QuoteThe PCI-E to PCI convertor does not support the 66Mhz Bus ?
Are you sure ?

About why the pci- to pci-e adapter does not supports 66MHz. It could be because the PLX chip bridge only has supports to 33MHz.

We would need the datasheet PLX CHIP.

Oscar.
