Post by: omega_supreme on 21 February 2004, 19:57:40
Hi people,
Nobody here knows me yet but i just got my v5 6k!
I bougt a latest revision from our friend Amigamerlin.
The card is doing really well. Q3 (1280x1024) went from 55 to 90
fps when i hooked up my 6000. At the moment it is not build in in my fastest system cause i still wanna play games like farcry:D Anyway
I put it in an untested mb from MSI. Its the KT3 Ultra-Aru. Amiga puts the rest of the info in the compatibility list. The rest of the system is : AMD Athlon 2100+ (not overclocked) and one clip of 512 MB DDR 333. The card was too big for my miditower but with a little bit of ironcutting it was no problem. As i said the card is awsome. Its as stable as my old friend the 5500 but a lot faster [8D] So there it is! Ow jeah one little question to ya all. Am i the only duth owner of a 6k!?!?!? Well thats it ill put a picture of my "precious" with the post so you van all see it :)

Kijk is aan, echt cool zeg woei! Eindelijk een echte Hollandse Voodoo5 6000 gebruiker ! Tof zeg.

in English:

Well look at that, pretty cool man , wow ! Finally A real dutch Voodoo5 6000 user!!!Please come to the GoT!!!And I just want to ask you a little question, can you have look at what Rev number and what PCB number your V5 6K has? Okay I said it was a Rev 3700 A1 but I could be mistaken.....The PCB number is on the back of your V5 6K and the Rev Number on the top of your V5 6K somewhere.

Oh thanks for your quick reply!!

Are you using a software firewall? I've had trouble with norton personal firewall not allowing me to complete registering to a few sites. Just disable it and you should be fine.

EDIT: Your V5 6k looks much like my V5 5500 atm, I'm waiting for a new mobo, so my old motherboard is out of the case, sitting on my desk, and I've got spare parts hooked up so I can play with it, testing a couple games and installing XP atm.

I Think you can find that on www.marktplaats.nl That wouldn't be a problem.

My problem is worser, I want the box of a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP, because I don't have it and I can't find it :-(
Title: 3dfx voodoo 5 6000
Post by: omega_supreme on 22 February 2004, 10:12:27
I agree that the box is a bigger problem, but i wish mine was as simple al you said. I agree that there are v5 5500 for sale @ marktplaats but i do not intend to buy a whole nem card just for the bracket. Besides that the bracket is very different from other cards. The video output plug is is all the way to the left (or right) and the rest of my cards are more center placed :( Im still looking.....

No that's perfect, and you must feel very lucky, because the Rev 3700 A'a are the best Voodoo5 6000's around in other words, they are the most less buggy ones around ;)

Good move:)

another nice thing is it's memory has a stagering memory bandwidth of 10,4GB per sec!!!!![:0] That's exactly the same amount of your GeForce4 Ti4600 downstairs :D And why this card is so special, is mainly it's size and it's performance for it's time. It can out perform a GeForce3 sometimes but it always outperforms the GeForce2 ULTRA so it comes more closer to the performance of a GeForce3 Ti 200 128MB ;) Nice hey :D :D :D

Absolutely that's where I remembered that nice info :D Oh man What a Voodoo5 6000 Ownage here:

http://images.sudhian.com/review/Voodoo5%206000/SS1024&1600.gif

Those V5 6K's punch alot of power actually, wouldn't mind having one though[^], got 27 3dfx cards now in my 3Dfx/3dfx collection and yeah need to buy a new IKEA Glas Table for the extra storage space ! lol :D Those tables give my room an extra 3dfx touch.

My favourite Voodoo remains the Voodoo5 5000 AGP Rev 3700 AO. The one Rolo has[8D]. That is quite a very Rare card. It's not as long as a 5500 AGP but it's size is just perfect and it has SGRAM instead of SDRAM and only 16MB SGRAM per VSA-100. In other words:
"I would love to have one of those Voodoo5 5000 AGP cards". :

3dfx Voodoo5 5000 AGP 32MB SGRAM Rev 3700 AO:

Hmmm rolo hé? i think i still have a nice interview of him with his v5 6000. I think it was from PCGamer hardware. I always wanted the voodoo but i never thougt i would get a real oppurtunity like this! :D When i first read the 6k had a grand total of 128 mb, when 32 was still the standard a was amazed by its power. When i heard i was cancelled i was very disapointed. When it was time for a new pc i decided to wait until a card would appear with the same kind of power.
I was a gf ti4600. I still like that card but i like the 6k more!
Anyway you said you had 27 3dfx cards :| thats sure a lot of em. Do you also have the company flag? That would be pretty behind your 3dfx collection :P

Well to reach the Ultimate Voodoo heaven you would need a AGP to PCI converter and combine that with your Voodoo5 6000 a AMD Athlon64 FX 53 based system [:p][:p][:p] And dream on I'd say. Then Unreal Tournament Game Of The Year Edition should be playable at 1024x768x16 [Glide] with FSAA x8, or even at 1024x768x32 [D3D or OpenGL] with FSAA x8  [:0][:o)]:) I think that 47 to 52 Frames per sec could be possible.

And in the ultimate voodoo heaven, you will find super-3danalyzer, which allows you to run a whole 3 directx12 games, and Dborca will find a way to get OpenGL 3.5 to run ;)

Sorry to interrup you guys but i have a problem :(
The 6000 wont handle the 2048x1536 resolution in any game.
Windows itself will do, but none of my games (that i tried) gives
a good image. I tried win xp and win98 wit both amigamerlin drivers and the last official drivers. I know this sounds a litle spoiled but i would really love to see my voodoo reach the limit:D Is it a driver problem or is it the hardware itself?

Doesn't anybody have a solution?? Rolo01?? Obiwan?? Anybody??
I have a picture that shows the card must be able to pull it off.
I could upload it but i think most of you people already know what im talking about. Its was on the presentation of the card (ECTS 2000 i think). There was this big monitor that showed q3 in 2048 and somebody was helding the 6k in front of the screen. please help me with this, im still very unexperienced with this little monster.

omega_supreme, can your monitor handle that resolution??
My Sony 19" G400 can only go up to 1770x900 or something to that liking....[xx(]
Title: 3dfx voodoo 5 6000
Post by: Rolo01 on 26 February 2004, 08:27:18
I cant test it, because my monitor cannot go as high as that...
Do the games run at all @ that resolution ? Or do you get an error message ?
I read somewhere you cannot turn on FSAA beyond 1600x1200 or something like that...
Title: 3dfx voodoo 5 6000
Post by: omega_supreme on 26 February 2004, 10:10:14
Im very sure the monitor can handle it. its a state of the art 22" monitor from iiyama and in very proud of it :DI alway played my games on 2048x1536 (@ geforce 4 ti4600) if they would allow (such as q3 and ut and cs). I also know that fsaa on the v5 6000 wont go above 1024, according to amigamerling, and as far as i know they really don't. But resolutions should not be a problem i thought. Unfortuantely it seems that the v5 6000 cant have 2048. The strange thing is that 1920x1440 doesnt show any problems at all. Depending on the kind of drivers different immages are produced. My favorite (amigamerlin 3.0 + mesafx 0.51h) look like the monitor cant handle it (but it can, im really sure) and the latest official drivers on win98 produce a small piece of the real size image(emphasized). I bougt the cars indirectly from hank semenec (through amigamerlin) Do you think i should contact hank about it? Thank you very much for your help and patience with me :)
Title: 3dfx voodoo 5 6000
Post by: omega_supreme on 26 February 2004, 11:13:36
OK i foud out! its just the drivers that are not far enough develloped. Resolution are only supported up to 1280x1024 according to amigamerlin. So we just have to wait a little longer to play at these resolutions ;)
Title: 3dfx voodoo 5 6000
Post by: dborca on 26 February 2004, 13:00:05
@omega_spreme
If you were testing OpenGL games, using MesaFX, I'm pretty sure I have limited the max resolution at GR_RESOLUTION_1600x1200. It's not that the driver can't handle better resolutions. It's because everything beyond 1024 is futile on my 15" state-of-the-art 1984 NEC monitor. :D :D :D

MesaFX should support upto GR_RESOLUTION_2048x2048, according to Glide, although I cannot test.[:p]

PS: I'm not kidding: I love my NEC. Crystal clear image with perfect geometry!
Title: 3dfx voodoo 5 6000
Post by: omega_supreme on 26 February 2004, 13:35:29
The game i tested withmesafx was quake 3. I noticed that it only went up to 1600x1200. When i switched to 2048x1536 the screen began to show really weird things. Black an purple stripes, as if the monitor couldnt handle it. Well anyway i asked amigamerlin about it and he said it was because the drivers were still in beta stage. But now that you mentioned the limit of 1600x1200 that could explain the quake issue. But i was also testing serious sam (second encounter) and it went up to 1920x1440. But again it failed at the 2048x1526. That was without mesafx. Now i understand that above 1024 is futile with a 15" monitor (im using one right now) but isnt there a way i can disable the 1600x1200 limit? It would really make me happy if i could play at the highest resolution. Even if it was just to once reach the limit of imagequality ;) thank you.

Aloha everyone, I came across Something, I took a peek on the back of my Voodoo3 3500, Voodoo4 4500 and Voodoo5 5500 Box and I saw a sceme saying the following:

Memory:           64MB Memory, 128Bit Interface
Fill Rate:           667 MegaPixels a second
Max 2D Resolution:   2048 x 1536 x 24bpp
Max 3D Resolution:   1600 x 1200 x 32bpp

Well 1600x1200 sems to be the maximum 3D Resolution of all Voodoo3,4 and 5 cardsm and also the V5 6K. So I guess that that sceme should give us all more answers.

P.S. here is also a Voodoo Jet Fighter!:

Now it works thanks to our friend obi one ;)It had to take away the mesafx file because of the 1600x1200 limit. And the colordepth must be set on 16bbp. The result you get is awesome! Next thing is to find a glide game with such a resolution [:p]Well ill put an image here as prove but an ingame image looks bad. The cam cannot take pictures of such fast moving frames unfortunately. Maybe some time ill make a screenhot if you want. Wel im off tomplay some more games @ 2048x1536 :)....and don't forget we owe it all to OBI WAN

I believe you can use a hotkey in Quake3 to make ingame screenshots.
Don't know which one it is though.
If Q3 doesn't have such a button try print-screen and past it in an image editor (psp, ps, etc).

Hi Omega_supreme
I'm happy that you was able to reach the resolution that you want but I need to precise some thing:

Voodoo 5 6k ( D3d Section of Amigamerlin 3.0 ) can go up to 1600x1200 or above but no one have tested it at this resolution then we can't assure that in this res the card works correctly. :D
At 1280x1204 I have tested it personally and the card works ok !!

Now , because you are able to manage this resolution with your monitor can do a lot of testing in D3D and opengl and give us a good feedback. :D

in opengl  Section (MesaFX) I think Daniel can remove the 1600x1200 limitation but we must try before release it officially.

Bye to all :)

Aaarggg just typed a whole book and something went wrong with the upload[:(!]well here i go again :

As i just typed, i would like you to know that i have only tested the extreme resolutions on Quake 3 Arene under windows Xp and amigamerlin 3.0 I also managed to play serious sam the second encounter on 1920x1440 with 32 bbp(that was really strange). However that was under win98 with the latest official 3dfx drivers (1.04 or something, not sure) I also did some testing on glide with unreal tournament. It went up to 1600x1200 with 16 bbp. Somehow glide wont recognise 32 bit (maybe it has something to do with the whole v3 thing)When i put it on D3D render (with the ini file) it looked awfull. It was tooooo bright and everything looked really blurry. I think it's the render itself but i can do some more testing if preferred. Call of Duty was also playable on 1600x1200x32 but that was because of the limit of the mesafx file. Although it couldn't go past 1600 it looked great. I had all the detail on the maximum and the card still produced a good playable 25 frames a second. Without the mesafx file the game is hopeless on a voodoo 5 6000/5500. Anyway it would be great if daniel would be able to get the limit off. And i would be honored if i could test it for you guys ;) . Well the 6k is back on the 15" monitor now, i cant wait until next time ;)

bye

Well as you all can see 3dfx is not short lived at all, thier remaining cards still show a wollap of agressive power at the games of today, 3dfx is still a powerfull Ally, as it always will be on our perspective :)

3dfx 4-Ever everyone :)

You did some great tests Omega_Supreme!! It is nice to see that de Voodoo5 6000 is also owned by dutch bloke  LOL :D And quite amazing that it handles QuakeIIIArena at 2048x1536x16 with an astonishing 52 Frames per Sec!!! This means that Amigamerlins and his team did a fabulous job of making stable drivers for the Voodoo5 series cards! That's a compliment from me guys!. The Force Is With You, I can sense it.

I'll add back insane resolutions in Mesa, and distribute for testing. Ask Amigamerlin for DLLs. Hopefully, I can fix those damn PIXELFORMAT issues, also.

Rolo01 i have a question for you, at least if you still come around here. I am looking for a specific monitor for my voodoo 6000 system. The monitor I'm talking about is the SONY GDM FW900. In my own country (netherlands, next to germany) it isn't sold anymore. Do you know if they are still sold in germany? I did some searching myself but i didn't get much of a result. So if you see one of these 24" beast [8D]around could you send me a link of the store.

Not yet, been busy playing with Mercury this week.

I need to find a KT-333 board that supports a 3000+ Barton, just have not had the time. A new one would be best, not many vendors selling them though.

I have a nice rack-mount case picked out for it already =)

I know its not really a shop but maybe you want to have a look at this auction (if you hav'nt already):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4614&item=6725027351&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
It says brand new and retail boxed. This is the board that was tested as best mainboard for v5 6000. I hope you will find the right board for you 6K, i was less lucky [V]

I think you people have forgotten something. Every Single KT333 chipset does support an FSB up to 166 MHz. Even higher with OC'ing. Bút the southbridge couldn't agree with that :( So on every revision 2 KT333 board, there is an 166 FSB sollution, that works perfectly.

Also, there are some Rev 1 boards who also work flawlessly with 166 MHz FSB. My MSI KT3 Ultra ARU. That is infact the predessor of the KT3 Ultra AR 2, There might be some more.

Anyway, If you have an Revision 2 KT333 mainboard, 166 MHZ FSB is supported, due to a better and new southbridge. (The same a KT400 has frankly ;))

Anyone interested to sell a V56k to me?

I'm building a retro computer and being a 3Dfx freak makes me want to own a 6000.

So anyone, price ideas?

The ASUS A7V333-R support Barton 3000+ with Bios 1017. The one I have now is a Rev.1.04 with Bios 1017, and a 333Mhz FSB 2700+ and the Barton 3200 is also possible but then with a 333Mhz FSB. 256 & 512KB cashes are fully compliant with Bios 1017. ;)

Won a Ultra 2 with raid today on Ebay, now to wait 2+ weeks for it to show up.

Best ram for this board?

Question- Will the Ultra 2 boot up with a Barton 3000+ if it doesn't have the most current bios? Or just not display CPU correct? I hate to buy a slower CPU just so I could flash the board.

If the board doesnt support the 3000+ It will work with Athlon 1400 speeds I think. But maybe the board doesnt need to be flashed at all. I only have the first MSI and that one does need to be flashed to support the 3000+. I think that 1024 MB of DDR333 will be more than enough to support you v5 6000, at least it worked good enough for me.
Good luck ;)

Another question for MSI Ultra 2 owners- Is the board picky about ram? Which Barton 3000+ to choose from? I checked NewEgg this morning and there is 3 different Barton 3000+ cpu's! I assume one of the 266 or 333 bus units have to be used.

Been years since I have run an AMD CPU, sorry for all the questions!
