Title: Modding the V5: adding a DVI connector?
Post by: Kreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman on 20 October 2005, 06:14:34
Well, some V5 cards have soldering points for DVI connector, notably the V5 5500 PCI. So is it possible to solder a DVI connector to such card? And will it work?

How hard is it actually to stick a DVI connector to a V5 (provided it already has the soldering points) and make it functional?

This is possible. But dont forget that you'll need the microchip that installed near the DVI connector, and it must be same as on Voodoo's that have DVI, or BIOS wont recognize it oor may not work properly.

As you see this is not so simple as it looks, youll need a rare microchip, DVI connector, equipment for stick, and working properly files hands.dll and brains.dll:D

Yeah, I agree:)

Also you'll need to add other little and tiny components that sticked with DVI on Voodoo 5.

soldering SMD-chips is difficult if you do not have the equipment...
and you cannot use these normal DVI-connectors as you see nowadays on every ati/nvidia ;)
here you have to use the DVI-D connector instead of the DVI-I which is used today...

here you can see the difference...

i wanted to mod a v4 4500 into a v4 4800 with dvi/tv! adding the tv-out is not the problem...if you have the equipment ;) you can take a v3 3000 tv-out (chip/tv-connector/SMD-chips) and solder it on the v4 4500 (if you compare the two layout you will see that it looks the same)...unfortunatelly i do not have the equipment...so i have to wait  ;)

but like teronl said...the dvi-chip is rare...but if you have these chips contact me ;)

Hi there! I just bought one V5500 PCI Mac Edition on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8731623723&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

now my question is: I have read that this card won't work in a PC without flashing a suitable BIOS in it.

1. As there exists different V5500 BIOS Versions, which one should I take and where do I get it? (I don't plan to overclock, just wanna make use of that DVI output:-)

2. How do I flash the cards BIOS?

I've got a Voodoo5 with all the required chips less the DVI connector.

Would like to get one if any one knows where to get them?

Maybe someone's got a dead board they'd like to get rid of?

do you have a dvi-controller-chip? the one which where used by 3dfx...
i have some dvi-d-connectors (i also have some controller-chips from the cards the connectors came from...made by siliconimage) but i invested too much time and money....
