Voodoo2 Discussions / Voodoo2 with 110mhz

I bought 1 of the revision B cards for $275 at a computer show in 1998. A few weeks later I found out I can do 1024X768 if I bought another 1 and set them up running SLI so I went to another show and bought a second card for $250. About 6 months later I saw the Voodoo2 cards at the show for $80 each so I bought 2 more for another system I was building for my son. I didn't realize the memory was different speeds on the cards especially since all 4 cards were Diamond Monster 3D II cards. I guess I got very lucky the second card I bought was still a revision B card that had 125MHz memory so the 2 were a perfect match for SLI. I think I'll keep at lease 2 of the cards until they stop working in that dedicated Glide system. No reason to sell them since I would probably get less than $40 for a set of Voodoo2 SLI cards. Even the last 2 I bought cost me $160 not to mention the $525 I spent on the first 2. I'm just glad I only spent $199 on my Voodoo5 5500 since we lost support from 3Dfx soon after I bought the cards.

I still have a few Voodoo cards even though I sold a lot of them.
(I still have)
The 4 Diamond Voodoo2 12Mb cards we have been talking about
1 Voodoo1 6MB card (rare too since most Voodoo Graphics cards were 4Mb)
1 Voodoo3 3000 16Mb AGP
1 Voodoo5 5500 64Mb AGP

I sold all the others off a while ago privately and on Ebay.
(SOLD)
2 Voodoo2 Black Magic 8Mb cards
1 Voodoo3 1000 AGP
1 Voodoo3 2000 PCI
1 Voodoo3 3500 AGP
1 Voodoo TV 100
1 Voodoo5 5500 AGP

Are they really that rare? You keep saying my card is rare. You should say my cards are rare since I have 2 with 125HMz memory...

I'm not using different speed memory cards together in SLI. Both cards are the same in each system. One system is running the 2 100MHz memory cards and the other is running the 125MHz memory cards. They are not different in each system.

The reason you can't get them any higher than 108mhz is because you the card also has the slower 100mhz ram. What a strange combination to use different brands and speeds, But he it works ;).
I guess you didn't read my post carefully. I said I have 2 of each card. I didn't bother to put all 4 in the pictures because that would make the pictures too large and there is no reason to show all 4 anyway. I put 1 of each in the top 2 pictures to answer the question of weather or not the 125MHz memory card was the same as the 100MHz memory card. Pay attention so you don't sound foolish next time.

Here are some pics of the Diamond Monster Voodoo2 cards. You can see both Revisions look the same. The top one is the Revision B card in the first 2 pics. You can see the 125MHz on the memory chips of the bottom 2 pics.

O my God, You have V2 cards with 125mhz ram!!!!!!!!!
ArchAngelCD these cards are extremely rare, I have never heared of a regular card with ram that fast, the only thing that used 125mhz and contained a V2 chip, was the Mercury that I know of. Well do you cool these cards well??? Can you overclock these cards to let's say 120+?? And is the PCB exactly the same as a normal V2?

It is very strange that a revision B card has 125mhz ram. Perhaps there wasn't any slower ram at the moment. I will add this offcourse in My archive.
They are normal Diamond Monster cards and look exactly like all other Monster cards I've seen including the others I have. I have the 2 Revision B cards in my system and the other 2 in my Glide only system. I have never OC'd the B cards but I have OC's the E cards with cooling. I have gotten them up to 108MHz without a problem. I didn't know the cards with 125MHz memory were rare but I was a little surprised to see memory that fast on a Voodoo2 card.

I have 4 Diamond Monster 3D II cards.
My 2 Revision B cards have 125MHz memory and my 2 Revision E, more current cards, have only 100MHz memory chips on it.

QuoteArchAngelCD, thanks..ill try that now but should i use the legacy drivers or the new ones like the amigasport?

have u had problems with dx9 in winsux 98?
The legacy drivers shouldn't be a problem since most, if not all true "GLIDE" weren't written for anything over DX7. There is no need for DX9 on a legasy Glide system running Win98se.

YES, that Glide system was the bomb back in the day. I still say that was the most stable system I ever used. Too bad things change so fast but then again, the graphics on the new games are great too.

800X600 is running correctly because that is the limit of one Voodoo2 card. You need your 2 Voodoo2 cards to run in SLI to get correctly render in 1024X768. Since you can run in 1024X768, that's telling you SLI isn't working. You must get SLI to work if you want to go above 800X600 which is almost impossible while running in the WinXP enviorment. I have 2 Voodoo2 cards in my system but I am running a Dual Boot so that I can boot to Win98se when I want to play Glide games.

The best drivers for Voodoo cards were written for the Win9x OS. All the old Glide games were written for Win9x also. If you have an old PIII system that you are using as a Glide machine I would install Win98se, that's what I did on my Glide system.

-Glide System-
Asus P3B-F Intel 440BX chipset
Intel PIII 650
128 Mb PC100 Corsair SDRAM
30 Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 7200 RPM HD
Mitsumi 48X CD-ROM
Windows 98se
Diamond Viper 770 Ultra 32Mb AGP
Diamond Monster 3D II 24Mb SLI
Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold
MS SideWinder Precision Pro Joystick
US Robotics 56K V.90 Fax/Modem w/voice
KTI KF-230TX 10/100 NIC

I was using TennMax's Stealth V2 Cooler. It's the best Voodoo2 cooler ever made IMO. http://tennmax.com/voodoo2/stealth.htm

TennMax also makes a GREAT fan for the VSA100 GPU (Voodoo5 needs 2) The Stealth V3 Fighter is unbelievable at keeping the Voodoo5 cool at 180MHz and higher. http://tennmax.com/voodoo3/stealth_v3.htm I especially like the thremal heat transfer pad that comes with the fan and the fact you install it with pushpins instead of glue.

I ran my Diamond Monster II cards at 98MHz all the time without cooling. At 102MHz they would overheat after 15 minutes of play. I got them up to 110MHz with cooling.

Taas,
Take a look at Dell because they have a lot of different systems available in all price ranges. You can do upgrades on the site before you buy the system. You still didn't tell us what your price range you are looking at.

You can get a Dell Dimension 3000 customized for $563
2.8GHz P4
512Mb Dual Channel RAM
80Gb HD
17" CRT Monitor
16X DVD-ROM and 48X CD-RW Drives
WinXP Home

You can get a Dell Dimension 4700 customized for $992
P4 520 (2.8GHz Prescott)
128Mb ATI X300 PCIe Video card
512Mb Dual Channel DDR2 RAM
80Gb SATA HD
17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor
16X CD/DVD-RW Double Layer single drive
WinXP Home

You can go to the Dell site and customize any system you like so that the price is right and you get what you want.

You can always buy the parts and build your own system like I do. I don't think I save any money but I get exactly what I want and the components in the system are much better than you would get in pre-made systems.

I hope this post gives you a little more information that will make your choice easier. Just ask if you need to know something else since I've been building systems professionally for over 12 years.
