I use the default settings, i didn't changed this. My pc (voodoo 5 5500, win xp) freezes in every game.
Can be this the cause?

It is not the cause. I tried this settings and got the same blue screen problem.

You must configure your sistem before video driver installation.

Follow these steps:

- Remove Voodoo driver and reboot
- Configure video card as "VGA Standard" by device manager and driver update
- If you are able to do...remove 3dfx data in OS regedit
- Install DirectX 8.1b (you can get this file on Hardware Setup (http://www.hwsetup.it/software/directx.htm) or 3dfxzone.it too)
- Install AM 2.5XP (see readme for driver setup info)

Now you could run games with good system stability (no blu sceen or os errors): only now you can read to optimize AM performance.

If need...i'm here

I had done all this you told, except by directx. I'm using direcxt 9 and amigamerlin 2.5 se.
This has to be done in order?

I followed all steps in order, but when I run dxdiag it is still showing directx 9 (I had it previously installed).
In the link you put I found directx 8.1 redist and 8.1 SDK. I installed the first. Is it correct?
Title: Amigamerlin 2.5 XP best settings

Now I installed directx 8.1b for winNT.
Is is still showing in dxdiag directx 9, but during the installation of direcxt 8.1b it seems files were copied, what hadn't happened with the directx from the link you provided.
Is there a way to get rid of direcxt 9 without reinstalling win XP?

QuoteMy pc (voodoo 5 5500, win xp) freezes in every game.

a bad software configuration...[:0]

Try removing DirectX 9 with  DirectX 9 Unistaller located at this (http://www.hwsetup.it/software/directx.htm) HWSetup.it page.

This is tool readme:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<< DirectX 9 Uninstaller for XP / .NET >>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This uninstaller uses your original XP or .NET CD to restore your original DirectX 8 files.
Extract these files to C:\DXTEMP! You must extract these files to this directory and run
the UnDx9.bat that uninstalls the DIrectX files in SAFE MODE. Enjoy!

--GxV of #betas

so you need WinXP setup cd.

Thus you could recover begin status for your OS...after install Directx 8.1b and then AM 2.5SE.

This is all, for now.

Well, I had reinstalled windows already.
Now I have the directx that came with it and amigamerlin se. Got the same old problem.
Should I install directx 8.1b first, and after the video driver? Is the file DirectX 8.1 Redist in that link you provided?
Title: Amigamerlin 2.5 XP best settings
Post by: gcc on 17 January 2003, 19:34:50
I did exactly what you said. Installing directx 8.1b doesn`t seemed to change it, because i got the same version from before (directx 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)).
Something that I noticed is that FIFA 2003 crashed not in the game itself, but in a pre-game screen - team management.
Is there a possibility that another thing that not video driver are crashing the system? I already tested audio drivers, both win and creative, and all crash.

The normal crash that uses to happen is that the game freezes and the sound comes repeting.
The last crash I had that also happens but not very often is the blue screen saying that it is possible that 3dfxvs.dll is crashing the system.

Maybe I should have told you that I use an Athlon 800 with Asus K7M board. I did`t installed any bios patch but this: http://www2.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_756_759%5e871%5e2367,00.html.

Another thing: when I first installed win xp over win me (updating) my voodoo worked perfectly with any driver.
I had to reinstall win xp alone (no previous win me), so my problems started.

Dear gcc, sorry for my delay...but i can't be anywhere...
Now I finished reading above replies and i think that you must configure motherboard chipset before video driver setup. With a good chipset driver agp bus works well under XP OS too.

Which is your mainboard? Visit chipset manifacturer site for latest driver update.

if you have installed the "Microsoft Windows® 2000 Patch for AGP Applications on AMD Athlon™, AMD Athlon XP, AMD Athlon MP, mobile AMD Athlon 4 and AMD Duron™ Processors" with your card, this is not the good driver because you're using XP

well, if i remember a K7M, this also a AMD 751 with a Southbrigde VIA 686A
i will try

Thanks for helping.
I installed the AGP driver listed in Nightbird reply (Windows® 2000/XP AGP Driver - Microsoft Digitally-Signed, Version 5.33). After, reinstalled amigamerlin, but the problem persists.
My motherboard is Asus K7M.
In asus page (http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=K7M) there is an AMD Bus Master IDE Driver v1.40G for Win NT40/2000/XP. I downloaded it, but when I try to install, i receive an error message "No AMD compunds found".

It's an idea: sincerly i prefer Windows ME for gaming and Windows 2000 for all other applications in a dual boot Windows based system.

So if you want use a double os just know my advice ;)

Changing OS didn't solved my problem.
Now I discovered what it was all about. It's 20:00 and the weather outside is above 30°C. It's damn summer here, lol... See by yourself: http://www.cnn.com.br/tempo/cidades/sa/Brazil/SantaMariaSBSM.html
I opened my pc and put a fan (a "human's fan") in front of it. The weather in the mainboard came from 49º to 37º, my computer is on more than 2 hours till now, and I could play FIFA 2003 and Counter Strike with no problems.
Who would now that... it's a month I have been trying to change drivers, reinstall OS and all that stuff. At least I figured out.

For your information:

Amigamerlin 2.5SE for WinXP works fine with DirectX 9 for me - no problems.

Installing new versions of DirectX does not bring about the fires of hell as it is made out to be.

When you install a new version of DirectX (regardless of the OS) your only problem will that the new features of directX 9 won't be used/compatible with your video card until the new drivers that support DX9 are released.

And to argue this further Microsoft has added DirectX 7 and 8 backwards compatibility into the release so, no  -- directX is not the problem.

If I can run Amigamerlin 2.5SE on WinXP on a Pentium II - 233, 256MB RAM, Voodoo 5500AGP - any one can.

I doubt that DX9 would be the cause.

Indeed, like DirX9 is backwards compatible, probably no problem with DirX
A game will run on an driver with an old core but probably some features will be missing or there may be visual glitches in the game
But the problem might be with games which depend from a new DirX feature...

Remember the problem that we know with the T&L, if 3DAnalyzer didn't exist in order to emulate this function...

The final problem is very simple : we need new drivers with a better support for DirX8/9 without forgotting OpenGL...
