Title: windows xp vs windows me
Post by: jonmistri on 04 March 2003, 12:25:03
Hi, i wanted to ask you a couple of questions referred to the AM 2.5SE XP vs 2.9 win9x driver pack.
-Why is not posible to activate the 3dfx overclock task in windows xp with AM 2.5 SE, when it is in windows me with the AM 2.9 driver pack?
-Why is Geometry assist avaiable in windows me and not in xp?

Thank you.

Hello.

To enable the overclock in windows XP I recommend you that you use the utility V.control of Koolsmoky.

And in AM 2.5 don't have the option "GEOMETRY ASSIST" because the drivers the they possess it activated in a native way.

ok?

ok, but if Geometry assist is activated in a native way, why is the performance difference?
I get about 100 3dmark 2001se points more in windows me (AM 2.9) with my voodoo 5 5500 PCI than in XP (AM 2.5XP or 3DHQ Beta 10).

All newer 3dfx Win9x Drivers "third party" and the last 3dfx Win9x reference drivers allow Geometry Assist for Voodoo 3, 4 and 5...

This is a DX7 Emulation performed by the Driver (not by the hardware...), this option emulates the T&L in the driver (with SSE or 3DNow) but only under Win9x or Me and DirX7

Under DirX8, i don't use this option which may not work and sometimes or often can produce bugs

And i'm not sure (because i don't use Win2k or XP) but perhaps the only Drivers that do not have this option functional/implemented are the Win2k/WinXP drivers...i'm not sure that this emulation can work with these OS

geometry assist in windows 200/XP can be found as Force MMX Instructions and Force 3DNOW Intructions for Open GL and Glide, and it isnt available for directx

when the sun goes down, the music turns up...

In my opinion, that may not be the best post to direct to since there are some useless pages there full of "stuff" other than the topic.[V]

You guys clearly don't get it. NO GEOMETRY UNDER NT/2000/XP. If Amiga says it andyou guys don't believe, then what will it take? GOD?

Geometry assist is 3dfx's proprietary software T&L engine as opposed to microsofts, it is a Direct3D Win9x feature. This option is not available under NT based Operating Systems and is also unavailable when using Glide or OpenGL rendering.  It can, apparently, be used as a subsitute for hardware T&L...  I believe it makes use of 3D Now! and/or MMX instructions.

Yes, and so did alot of people when it first came out. That was when 3dhq was still around. But I do believe that one user was able to get it running...

Really? got it running --- that's scary.

Without even installing/running it you know it'd flunk all the tests, considering the voodoo series card doesn't have things like the pixel shader, etc, ect. You'd think it wouldn't be worth it.

Heck - just for ****s and giggles I ran it on my GeForce2PRO -- and even the whole -1- test I could run was dog slow -- go figure though.
