Title: MSI ms6168 problem
Post by: benna on 17 December 2006, 14:12:42
hi all,
i aquired an ms6168v2 motherboard with an integrated voodoo3 2000 8Mb
the card works fine in 2d but in 3d i got some strange errors
with 3dmark 2001se any resolution above 800x600 crashes with a "out of memory" error
with 800x600 the first demo works well (with some flickering), but in the same demo in high quality many textures are missing
do you think this is an hardware failure or a consequence of the small video memory?
thanks in advance

p.s. i'm using am2.5 and win98

its because the card has only 8MB of memory.I'm having similar problems..

the driver shouldn't prevent this problems by scaling the textures?
is there any chance to run a game in 1024x768?
i tried also with original 3dfx drivers and the problems are the same

At the moment there is no software-rescaling in D3D, only in OpenGL when using MesaFX. It would be a great advantage in the future if some driver would make that possible in D3D also...
What kind of games are you trying to run ? Older titles should work fine.
BTW, I even have the problem with texture errors in first game test in 3DMark2001 ( high details ) with a 64MB Voodoo4, so it is no surprise that you see the same with only 8 MB.

since now i tried only with 3dmark
another question: do you think is safe for integrated v3 (AGP) to overclock the chipset from 100 to 133mhz (AGP @ 88mhz)?

oww, that sounds painful.I think you should try flashing the MSI BIOS if you want 133FSB support,it should work..mostly.

i already flashed the bios with the standard MSI version (my mb came from a PackardBell pc and have a different bios) and i mounted a p3 1000/133 slot1
the pc seem stable because i did a 8mb superpi without errors and in ut99 the card works correctly up to 1024x768 (but when i select 1280x1024 the video fall down to 640x480[:(])

so do you think is unsafe set the fsb to 133mhz for long time?

no it should be ok..as for 1280*1024 res,I dont think a 8MB card can handle that ;)

hi!

i am using this board too with an 1,3Ghz Tualeron. The Cpu is many hours prime stable, but running 3Dmark 2000 or playing results in a freeze or XP bs after about 20 min...I dont think this is a heat issue. Maybe related to bad caps for the v3...i replaced all around in red and maybe those in blue are important too. Any suggestions?

put a fan over the video chipset.  or at LEAST glue a heatsink to it.  Are you sure that the fan you have on the 1.3Ghz processor is adequate? it looks OK from here, but not sure...

oh you misunderstood the picture...its just the board.. the fan is on the v3 chipset and on the picture there is no cpu inserted!
