Title: nfs 2 se\ glide, w98\v4 4500
Post by: tr32z on 02 October 2003, 09:54:25
i am going thru my old games to see which ones i want to keep and which ones i will give to my nephews.
how do i setup need for speed 2 se to run in glide, on the cd in the setup folder there are 2 other folders glidenr and glidersh, each have a glide2x.dll and fxmemmap.vxd[3Dfx DirectX Driver] in them. if i let the game sit at the main menu, there is a nfs2 movie that runs and in the corner there is the 3dfx logo. just curious.
game is running in software mode cause fsaa in d3d\glide has no effect on the game.

w98, dx8.1b, v4 4500, d3d-1.04.00, glide2x\3x-ksmoky, ogl-1.07.00.

if someone still has this game running in win9x with glide, what are your reg settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed II SE

do you have any switch in the short cut?
ex:    "G:\Need For Speed II SE\nfs2sen.exe"  [-d3d0]
like nfs hs uses that switch -d3d0

found the answer:
i had to copy the nfs2ea.exe[3dfx version] from the nfs2se cd to the folder it installed into, then changed the shortcut to point to nfs2ea.exe.
now i all i have to figure out is how to get incar camera to work, nfs2sen.exe allows for 4 camera views but 3dfx version nfs2ea.exe only has 3 views.

As far as I know there was no incar view in the 3dfx version of the game...

I#180;ve got the same probleme here.

Yesterday i was kinda "clean up" my 3dfx collection and found in an Intense Voodoo Rush Box a Copy of NFS2 SE.

Now i#180;m trying to get that game runing with 3dfx glide on my main sys (XP Prof. SP1, 2x V2 in SLI mode accel. my 6800GT).

The game runs pretty fine in normal mode - but the hints here (with copying the exe) don#180;t work.

I get an error message - less then 1MB of HDD memory available - and if i#180;m clicking ok i stuck on a black screen.

Heard that maybe it#180;s an incampability with Merlins Drives (using FastVoodoo 4.0 Gold), but i not willing to set up another - it#180;s working pretty fine with unreal, quake and other great classic. ;)

Any suggestion, what i can do to solve this problem?

@ Phobos
I own your version of the game.
So i tried with my Voodoo 5 under Millenium
- in software mode
- in glide :

Copy the NFS2SEA.EXE file from the ROOT directory of the
game CD-ROM in your Need for Speed directory into your hd.
Set up a new shortcut to the desktop for this file to run Need for Speed II SE in glide.
BUT with the glide2.dll in the last FastVoodoo2 4.0 for Win2k/XP, you see only the logo 3dfx and the game doesn't start.
So you will need to backup/rename this glide2 (1.0.1.106) as in glide2.dll.back.
Then d/l the last 3dfx driver 3.02.02 for Win2k/Nt or the FastVoodoo 3.5 for Win2k/XP and extract the glide2.dll (Glide Driver Version : 2.56.00.0459) and put it in your system.
Try to run the game.

Thx for the hint!

I tried agian with the .dll#180;s of the fix for FV4.0 and now i runs like hell.

I dont see any 3dfx symbol starting the game, but i#180;m quiet sure it runs now on the V2#180;s - i can choose car details now i the option menu and there are the good old effects like rain oder moskitos splashing against the screen.

But i#180;m still a bit confused. The eges look awfull, is there any way to get a higher resolution or using some filters and anti aliasing?

I played the game on a Pentium 1 and my first Voodoo card (ColorMaster V1) some time and thought that it looked much smoother.

Or was this just the crappy 15 inch CRT?

Hum, if you run in Glide, you will see really the difference, specially with the software mode.
I ran this game with a V5 but for a V2, i need to set up an other machine.

Hmmm, i can see the effects but it doesn#180;t look like glide - strange thing...

Any ideas?

Damn it!

I tried WickedGl and MiniGl drivers, reinstalled the FV 4.0 and got major problems with other games as well. Unreal looked awful, UT and UT2k4 stuck at startup and Quake3 freezed.

After hours i could manage to clean up this driver mess, but NFS2 still looks like without any filter - i#180;m pissed off. =(

QuoteWickedGl and MiniGl drivers
They will not run the game.
I wonder if you're starting really in glide because between the software mode and the glide mode, it's really a visual difference !
For now, i can do or see nothing because as said i must setup a machine with 1 or 2 Voodoo 2 so change also the main gfx card.
Hum, i 'm not an XP user, so that will be under Win2k or perhaps under Win95(OSR2), like the original game.

I installed the game right now (thanks tr32z, i have the same problem) and i think this game maybe have poor visuals in 3dfx mode than in software mode, the colors are too bad, the resolution too low... the visuals sucks too much. I don´t remember this when i played years ago in a Voodoo Banshee, maybe somethings wrong, or not ? maybe the time passed to bad for this game (not for NFSIII, it´s amazing at this times).

I run the game on a Voodoo 5 AGP, PII 450, 512Mb PC100 and Gigabyte BX2000 motherboad (Intel 440BX). SO is WIN98SE

Hi there, I have NFS2SE running perfectly fine under Windows 98SE with a Voodoo5500 AGP, using the latest 3dfx drivers that were released from 3dfx themselves. Tried to get the game working under Windows XP but failed.

As far as I experienced it, you need Win95 / Win98 in order to play it with Glide support. Of course, you first need to copy that EXE file from your NFS2SE CD.

It's actually pretty easy to determine wether the game is running in glide mode or not: All Weather effects only appear in the Glide Version of the Game i.e. Snow on the "Mystic Peaks" Track, or the flies that hit your windshield on the "Outback" track.

NFS 2 SE :) I played a lot this game.

Game runs on WindowsXP, whit any voodoo (if you hava the correct driver) But it wont run if you have more than 512mb ram.

This is going to fix the ram problem: http://voodoo.atw.hu/nfs.rar

enjoy ;)

Hi!

I've found a way to make NFSIISE(full) work in glide mode!

If anybody stucked, here's the solution:
- Install the game.
- Copy the nfs2sea.exe to the game directory.
- Download the NFSIISE 3dfx demo!(Available free on many webpages.)
- Unpack the demo, you'll see a 3DFX directory.
- Copy it to the full game dir.
- Start with nfs2sea.exe
- It will complain about the disc space... whatever... press OK!
- Play the game with beautiful graphics! :)

PS: In the 3DFX dir, you'll have RUSH and VOODOO dirs, with old glide2x.dll-s. I've tried to overwrite them with new ones came from koolsmokys driver(http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1839). (I'm using XP with that driver, V2 12 MB SLI.)

Thank you.
