Title: V5 Mac - Desktop freezes
Post by: DarkRaven on 05 March 2006, 00:56:05
Hi!
I bought the v5 at an auction on ebay. This card came from usa yesterday. I put it into my computer and flashed it with the 1.18 bios at first. I used it as secondary card. After switching i cant believe my eyes: the desktop froze. As primary its the same problem. Then i thought it is a bios problem and flashed it back to 1.16. I tried it as primary again: the card works for ~10sec. After resizing a window the desktop froze again.
Does somebody have an idea? I'm very thankful for advices!!!

maybe you have an unstable system or the motherboard you have has symptoms, unless the flash failed [:(] I surely hope not. [V]

But if the flashing failed, i could put an other flash vers on the card, or do you mean the card didnt go along with the bios flash to pc version?

make sure you set "boot from pci" in your BIOS.my voodoo5mac (v4/5pci as well) locks up the very same way unless I do that.

im writing this text while my v5 mac is running. its interesting, the v5 works without problems when i do not use graphic drivers! i installed sfft35 drivers changed to 1280x1024@32 bit and opened trillian: when the pop up of trillian was shown the desktop froze again [:(] . i changed agp -> pci in bios. Any ideas?

Did the card eventually flash with the pc bios? You mentioned that you tried ver. 1.16 as well, but that is not for the MAC/DVI version. The only bios is the special one ver. 1.18.

how do you mean that? "card flash with the pc bios"? i first tried out 1.18 with DVI support, then 1.16.
i think 1.16 should work on a MAC too, but without DVI, doesnt it?

Probably it should. You said: "But if the flashing failed, i could put an other flash vers on the card, or do you mean the card didnt go along with the bios flash to pc version?" , so i thought the card didnt't even flash. If it did flash, then it surely flashed correctly. And in the second case i am quite sure that it is a hardware issue, that can not be fixed. Sorry.

Maybe the second gpu is damaged? Standart drivers utilize only the first gpu..

Same idea here
Try to run the V5 in mode "Single chip only"

Try to use the V5 card in another machine and see whether it will froze or not.

V5 5500 only uses only the first chip in 2D. Setting single chip mode will only affect 3D.

thx for all advices!! i know the problem know, its the asrock k7s8xe motherboard. it doesnt have a good compatibility with the v5 mac. in my old k7sv5za elitegroup motherboard the voodoocard works perfectly. i also tried out UT99 with 3dfx glide -> the second gpu works too. strange that asrock has such compatibility problems with older cards.

there you see :) older boards have better compabillity than the somewhat newer ones in most cases.

Though my Voodoo5 5500 PCI does work perfectly in my MSI MS-9130 K8T Master2-FAR Dual Opteron Board, which isn't that old. I suppose the MAC cards have more compabillity problems than the normal 5500 PCI PC versions, which still sounds to be an odd thing.

But anyways good to see your Voodoo5 5500 PCI For Macintosh is in good shape and congrats by getting it working also![:o)][:I][8D]
