Sad, isn't it?

In case you missed it, here is a mirror from the forum post:

http://falconfly.vogonswiki.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBBf5c7.html?num=1483392373

There are some mirrors of the website so nothing is lost! The kind owner also sent people DVD backups of the site.

After some time, I'm playing a few gmaes on my V5 PC again. Now I'm browsing ebay for maybe a motherboard+cpu upgrade :) P3 800 is so slow.

Well I tried 3 different motherboards, many drivers and it still wont work properly. Only amigamerlin's drivers on windows 98 don't crash with 4xaa. I think I have to admit that it's broken, I noticed a capacitor has a tiny dent in it but I doubt that's whats causing the lockups. Maybe I'll buy another v5 when they show up on ebay for cheap.

Thanks for the help though guys. It's nice to see you can still get help with old hardware like this :).

Happy new year btw!

Thanks for replying,

I'll try the single chip only for dos applications later but if I can run everything with 4x aa on windows98 and nothing on win2000, it's a windows2000 problem right? More help is appreciated of course :).

Just tried the other drivers and removed the sound card;

Doesn't work, funny I found a forum post from 2001 with someone having exact the same problem as me.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=473261

Too bad he never posted how he fixed it (if he ever fixed it).

I'm sure everything is fine under Windows 98. I can play Unreal with 4 x aa without problems but nothing works on windows 2000.

Thanks for the reply Obi-Wan Kenobi!

I actually got Diablo2 on win2k to work yesterday by putting AA mode to "single chip only". Thought maybe 1 vsa chip is broken, however when I grabbed a different PSU I noticed it had more "AMPS" for the 3.33V (AGP I think?). The old psu had 12 and the new one 20 amps. Maybe 12 amps isnt enough for the card. I wasn't able to test Diablo on win2k again, but Unreal 1 under win98se worked with 4xAA. Kinda sure the videocard is fine then, no? (except for old dos programs). Maybe the other psu fixes something, i dunno.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them monday when i have time.

Hi all,

I'm having problems running games with my voodoo5 on win2k. I've tried amigamerlin 3.1 drivers and 3dfx 1.04.00 whql drivers. When I start a game like diablo 2 all i get is a black screen or a "!" in the upper left corner of the screen. Only directdraw works. When using glide or direct3d the whole pc freezes and i have to restart. I've reinstalled windows and left directx at 7.0 but this doesnt work either. I've also reverted the cards bios back to 1.06 (used 1.15 first).

Also tried playing Myth 3 (opengl i think) on win2k and this doesnt work, the screen is all green. On windows 98 myth 3 plays fine although a bit slow.

One more thing: low resolutions (veery old dos games which use cga graphics or vga) never worked with this card, i get strange lines and the mouse cursor has trails. other games always worked fine.

PC:
Asus cuv4-x
Intel pentium 3 800
512 mb pc133 sdram
3dfx voodoo 5 5500 agp
soundblaster pro 2.0 (disabled in win2k)
soundblaster live! value
400 watts psu (i think).

So can anyone help me please? I already gave up on the low res dos games but i'd like to get it working again under windows2000 with 3d games.

Thanks for responding.

It looks like it's finally over with the 98 updates site. I doubt they'll fix it. They could've put a message there instead of this, asses. Anyway I guess we'll have to use the 98se 3rd party service pack since it has some of the Windows updates in it.

I'd say go for Windows98 second edition. DOS and DOS sound support sucks in Windows XP.

Since 2 or 3 weeks I'm unable to acess the Windows update site with Windows 98. Anyone else having this problem? Microsoft won't help only says Win98 is not supported which I already knew.

Games / carmageddon splat pack

Don't know about mismatched voodoo2 sli cards, but there is a patch available to voodoo2 owners (also works for voodoo5), google voodoo2c.exe or voodoo2s.exe. If it can't find your voodoo drivers, reinstall them and make sure there are no voodoo drivers in your carmageddon directory. Also, go to your voodoo 2 display properties in windows, and check the dosglide driver. If it displays a version number it should work.

The following information will NOT work for the voodoo2, you won't need to disable emm386.exe for a voodoo2, the SET line is also useless for the voodoo2.

For My_Spleen:

Running Carmageddon 1 fine with my Voodoo5 5500 AGP.

Try this:

In your config.sys REM out emm386.exe (this also works for the voodoo3). Keep in mind that your DOS high memory will no longer work so you'll have to make sure you have enough conventional memory (or just play in Windows). Dos is better though.

Next, type this at the DOS command prompt (or at the Windows dos prompt);

SET SSTH3_SLI_AA_CONFIGURATION=0

This disables the Voodoo5's SLI and AA capability, allowing you to run DOS games. Reboot your computer to turn SLI and AA back on.

Thanks for the useful variables pierrickuk, some of them improved the visual quality and speed (think they are overlaymode=1, fastmem=1 and fastpcird=1)!
I am, however, still unable to increase the refresh rate and the 3dfx logo (dos spinning one) wont come up either (maybe it's removed from voodoo3-voodoo5 cards?).

I won't give up and I'm still trying to get higher refresh rates out of it. Anti aliasing would be incredible with old games like Lands of Lore 2 and Carmageddon 1. Any more suggestions from anyone are very welcome!

Happy new year.

Voodoo4/5 Setup and tweaking / Refresh rate stuck.
28 December 2010, 11:36:12
Hey pierrickuk,

The games I'm trying to play are Carmageddon - Max Pack and Lands of Lore 2. The computer reboots when trying to play LoL2 in dos, windows dosbox works though. The things I've tried for starting them are;

Set SSTH3_SLI_AA_CONFIGURATION=0 <-- have to use this for every dos glide game
and remming out emm386.exe

The emm386.exe has to be remmed out when you're using banshee, voodoo3 and voodoo5 under MS-DOS. Another thing you can try with voodoo2 and glide games is the newest drivers (from 3dfx), the old ones didn't work for me unless i lowered my cpu speed from 700 to 333 (or something like that).

Thought I'd post that, maybe it works with your scream game.

Anyway, I'll try the different drivers and throw them in the game map. It appears I need the correct set variables for refresh rates, a variable to override the game refresh rate and the correct drivers that listen to the variables.

Thanks alot for the reply, I'll try these things soon.

Merry 3dfX-mas

Voodoo4/5 Setup and tweaking / Refresh rate stuck.
27 December 2010, 00:25:37
Hello,

I've got problems with the refresh rates on my Voodoo5 5500 AGP. They're stuck at 60 hertz in dos 3dfx glide mode. Windows (98SE) glide is fine. Tried windows dos prompt and pure dos, but that doesn't work because dos glide games crash in pure dos. Any fix for that as well?

I have already tried unirefresh but the card won't listen to that, the variables SET FX_GLIDE_REFRESHRATE=85 and SSTH3_SCREENREFRESH=85 wont work either. V.Control only works for Windows games. I'm currently using RazielEvolution drivers, but I tried others and those won't work either. Also, since I have this Voodoo5, I no longer get the glide2x spinning 3dfx logo. Is it possible to get it with the v5 card? I liked it :)

I'd really like to play glide games in dos @ 85 hertz again so any suggestions are appreciated

Thanks for the reply!

Yes I've tried that and it works sometimes. I edit the options.ini file and set Acceleration to "no". Primary or Secondary card doensn't matter. Then I start the game and put Acceleration to yes. I don't see the 3dfx logo but it works.

I think in bios CPU/PCI frequincy is giving problems. Carmageddon only works sometimes at 333 mhz (with the voodoo2 patch).

Btw:

I found out that reducing my CPU clock speed to 300-330 mhz (something like that, don't remember exact speed) fixes some things. I can now see the spinning 3Dfx logo at game startup but Carmageddon 1 (DOS) hangs at that point.

When I increase clock speed again I get a GL error.

Lands of Lore 2 is playable for about 1 minute, after that it hangs. Keyboard is messed up in that game and sound stutters with cpu rate reduced.

This is all in true DOS mode (win98se). When I try to run them from a dosbox in Win98, it never works. Always a black screen.
Thanks in advance
