important question: do all the FSAA/SLI modes work properly (on the 5500)? how big is the performance gain?

actually,I would be more interested to see whether you can run a voodoo2 this way..

the performance is also very good!

can you bench the card in the PCI slot, and then in the PCI-Express to see the differences ?

Thank you m14radu. I read your very interesting topics 2 or 3 years ago.
Your mod on agp4x, for example.
For more info, follow the link in my first post.
On 3dmarks the PLX was 7% beyond the PCI in the same conditions.
In game, maybe 10% beyond.
Performance increase also with the frequency of the cpu.
Would be interesting to test with 3,0 ghz cpu.
I try the mod to keep my V5500's on further configurations
as Sandy or Ivy bridge.
Best regards to the website team and sfft.

3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PLX with Pci-Express tuning in Bios (https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.canal-pc.fr%2FN0046447001302990805.jpg&hash=556b8b22c154b69b695bebee132b5736073ca86a)
Even compared to the best 3dfx V5 6000 Agp,
the Pci-express bridged V5 5500 appears like a fierce opponent.

nice score mate !
I must admit that i get the same score ( around 3700 points ) with my v5 6000 on a socket A platform !
what kind of optimization did you in bios ? Or did you overclock the card ?
please give us more details :)
Title: 3DFX Voodoo5 5500 works on PCI-Express !!
Post by: jix-reggio on 17 April 2011, 12:19:00
Thank you, I will give you the details.
Here, I tried to amplify the effects of using the Pci-Express bridge by increasing carefully the Pci-express clock from 100 Mhz to higher values.
Remember that, in the previous 3dm2001 screen (3479), the use of a Pci-Express bridge leads to a 20% boost on triangles and point sprite, respectively from 2,9 to 3,5 and from 0,5 to 0,6.
Comparing V5500 Agp and V5500 Pci results in these items, I thought some V5500 Pci ressources, unbound from Pci bus priority management, were employed in more accurate geometric calculation. My idea was to manage a further exploration of this unemployed V5500 Pci potential, acting on a single parameter, the Pci-E clock.
Clock of the V5500 was kept @187 Mhz (appears as Texture fillrate @374 MTexel / 2).
Pci-Express was slighly increased to 112 Mhz and I gave some more juice to the CPU (From 2650 to 2750 Mhz)  to help deeper computation.
Visible results, as you can see on the 3dm2001 screen caught with AmigaMerlin 3.1 on XP, is a 10% boost on triangles up to 3,8 and 1,4, leading to a slight boost on FPS in every 'game demo' sequence. The same test with Sfft 1.6 on W7 showed  a 15% boost on triangles and also a point sprite 10%  increase.
So, according with my little empirical knowledge on this issue, I agree with the opinion that the SFFT 1.6 were optimized to exploit unemployed ressources on  'geometric calculation'.  I would like to have SFFT feed-back on these excellent SFFT 1.6.
:)

it would be intersting to repeat the test on a quad core platform :)
ups, or even on 6x or 8x core..hehe...

how much did you pay for the adapter ?
do u have a online link to see where can i look for one ?

This is pretty dang awesome.

Is there any chance you might be able to run a bootable cd or flash drive with a linux distribution and run lspci -vv from a command line?

It should show all PCI express and PCI devices. I would image that PCI bridge will show up in there somewhere, and it would also show what clock rate the V5 was running at on the pci bridge.

I'm guessing that stock, with just the adapter, it may be running as 66mhz PCI like the V5 agp did, and if the clock speed scaled with the overclock, then it may be running at a higher rate, like 70 or so mhz.

I keep trying to remember what program I used to show pci bus data on windows XP. I'll see if I can track that down as it would be easier for you to verify with a windows program.

This is really nice work though. I had always wondered about those PCIe bridge devices. It seems they work a lot better than anyone would have expected.

Hello, thank you for discussing about this issue.

EDIT (2013) :
You were right and I ran successfully V5500 Pci @70 mhz in 2013.

I had listed pci peripherals with Everest, and you can get the best information on this french topic starting on page 30 with 'V5500 PLX Pci-e Bridged first appearance'  post and on following pages :
http://forum.hardware.fr/hfr/Hardware/2D-3D/topic-voodoo-3dfx-sujet_567660_30.htm
The card is recognized as a pci device on Bus N°3 / Peripheral N°0 / Function N°0
Even if Everest  displays the bus 3/0/0/  is '66mhz capable' (because it's interfaced with a pci-E 1X connector), in my opinion the V5500 always operates @33 mhz when bridged. I think the V5500 Pci will be damaged and burned if pushed to 66 mhz, and It's not my idea to damage these 3dfx oldies.
I had benched V5500 pci many times and I know these cards are clocked @33 mhz but, according to my little experience with Wpcredit & Wpcrset software, are 40 mhz capable. I think when pushing the Pci-E clock from 100 to 112, the card I/O frequency is boosted from 33 to 37 mhz. I would not run the V5500 at this frequency for a long time, as I never damaged a Voodoo card.
My idea was to give a contribution to the community for their work, explore the Voodoo 4/5 pci-express bridged options, and have some fun with my oldies. :jap:

Mradu, Here you have a reliable french firm to find the PEX 8112

thanks for the informations mate !
i would not be so sure that the card will be burned at 66Mhz.
anyway, it's a risk .....
if you look on other forums, there is an agp2pci adapter witch allow to a voodoo5 ro run in a pci slot. This adapter can run at 66Mhz.
Some users mod this adapter to run at 66Mhz, and the results are very nice with a v5 6000 :)

the adapter price of 40 euros is ok :)

Translation :
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm v4.0.6.13xxx runs on Voodoo5 (Windows XP x86 + SFFT 1.6). Visual range has to be set to minimum.
Issues :
Screen flickering even with 2x SSAA.
Solution :
Run WoW in a Window.
Turn off Hardware Cursor.

In the above Thread there is also a screenshot with settings.

Voodoo 5 on pci-x is more faster than Voodoo 5 on pci-express.
4697 vs 3620 marks.

The best solution is to have a pcix on motherboard like Supermicro or Asus.

You are right with very nice hardware.
But for budget machines, I think Pci-express is more affordable.
Look at this bench, you would see that my V5 5500 PLX with a 'monosaur' Cpu can approach, in some cases, your performance.

Okay, here we go :
Do NOT use setup.exe !
Install by Device Manager.
Open the video card in device manager by right click, choose "properties", then "update driver".
Do NOT let Windows install automatically, choose "manual install".
Then point to the directory where you have the SFFT driver.

using setup.exe for the sfft driver only installs the driver into the driver database. You still have to use device manager to install the sfft driver as the active driver for your voodoo card. Windows will install a signed driver in preference by default, you need to override this behaviour by manually selecting the sfft driver. setup.exe installs the driver with an un-install option so you can un-install the driver via the remove software option in control panel.

I would now thank the Team for showing my work in the may 14th news. I would not look like a pretentious with my benchmark, that was for joking and dreaming a little.
I wanted to share with you information as accurate and detailed as possible. I hope my small contributions will help the community. Thanks to  Zeratul and Narm (from french website hardware.fr) who made me know 3dfxzone.it
I've just tried a PCI-Express bridge and experienced some Bios parameters.
Voodoo5k6 is right, this is not the most powerful choice (even if V5500 PLX scores 3772 in last bench ;)  ) , but it is a good budget choice and open doors on 'up-to-date' configurations.
It would be interesting to make a new thread about the '66 mhz way'.
3dfx graphics cards will still continue with very (very) good drivers and tweaks that have been made #8203;#8203;by your community. Hope we will do things together.

Does it freeze as well in single chip mode ?

God work !

If a v5 5500 can achieve 4700 points...then a v5 6000 should get the double of performance...so that the 10.000 wall should be possible ! :)

hmm interesting however you are still limited to the 33Mhz PCI Bus, as most 5500 PCI users know these cards also support 66Mhz Bus 32Bit in any PCI-X or PCI64Bit slots :)

I wonder if there are PCI-X to PCI-E convertors, then you could even get amuch higher score, due to the faster bus which will be 66Mhz instead of 33Mhz..

@mradu :  I did'nt overclock on win7, just push the Pci-E to 120 mhz. As I said Powerstrip works on Win7 and allows slight overclock, but it is shareware not freeware and  I am not sure it can overclock the 2 vsa-100 of a V5 5500.
As I am not experienced as some 3dfx power users here, I would ask the same question than you : "Did any power-user here find a way to overclock the 2 vsa-100 of a V5 5500 PCI on win7 ?"
@Obiwan : I pushed succesfully the Pci-Express frequency to 122 mhz on my mobo (both on XP and Win7), resulting in a 40 mhz V5 5500  Pci frequency, but I stopped there because I was not sure my mobo would like more than a 22% boost on Pci-express !
I like 'living 3dfx cards', and sometimes I must admit I overclocked these oldies to a reasonable limit, but I am not the kind of guy who will destroy his mobo and his Voodoo5 to get 100 points more running a benchmark !
In addition, I read that only the V5 5500 PCI 'MAC version' would run @66mhz. So my question would be "Did any power-user here had pushed a V5 5500 PCI 'PC Version' to 66mhz ? "
I will break safely the 4000 points wall with great cache, ram and Pci-Express controllers directly included in the CPU like a Sandy bridge machine.

Any 3dfx PCI 2.1+ card can run @ 33Mhz & 66Mhz bus ;) this includes all Voodoo3 4 and 5 PCI based cards, not sure about the older PCI cards though.

So, that the only problem is to find out how to set this speed.
Are there some adjustable settings possibility on the riser card ?

It could be that he could not run at 66Mhz bus, because the PCI-E to PCI convertor does not support the 66Mhz Bus , which the AGP2PCI Convertor does support, this might also explain his slower 33Mhz bus limit, which he was able to OC to 40Mhz, but still it did result a lower score than I have seen with a 5500 PCI in a PCI-X 64 Bit Slot @ 32Bit mode with 66Mhz Bus.

Although osckhar did an interesting test with this, dunno where that thread was though, since it was quite some time ago heh.

I do wonder what generating a score in 3Dmark 2001 in 16 bit mode with half of the test turned off tells us. You can't compare the score with the benchmark run in 32bit mode with the default tests running.

an hardware mod.
Hope some skilled users will share informations about V5500 @66mhz mode

Pci-E was set @100 mhz, Vsa-100 @189 mhz

Because V5-5500 agp is not a true agp. It does not has support agp texture and it runs to AGP1x (266Mb/s), same like PCI vers. So, the models agp/pci are able to run 66MHz. AGP1x=PCI66

About why the pci- to pci-e adapter does not supports 66MHz. It could be because the PLX chip bridge only has supports to 33MHz.

We would need the datasheet PLX CHIP.

so far as I am aware PCI devices have a have a bit in configuration space that indicates whether it is a 66mhz capable device. Presumably the brdige should be using this to setup whether it runs at 66mhz or not.

I the past I edited the pci register with Wpcredit and chipset files descriptors, but is it the good way for new chipsets ?
Maybe there is a new tool for example to set the bit 5 of the 'status register' of my Voodoo to 1 ?

Hi at all,

I did some test.

Using pcie2pci adapter the card works to 33MHz. Same score that using the card in a PCI slot 33MHz. Even, PCIe2PCI+AGP2PCI+v5-5500AGP adapter I got same score than using V5-5500 pci in a pci slot.

Chip  bridge used in the adapter is 66MHz compatible. So, the question is if adapter needs to be modified like agp2pci adapter (but I have check pinout and there is not info about MHz speed) or pcie2pci adapter needs to be plugged in a real pci-e 1x. My motherboard only has 16x.

Another problem can be about IRQ and some components use same IRQ and when an IRQ is shared for others HW then speed down.

no, jix-reggio uses the pci-e 1x slot and get the same results.
there is no influence if the adapter is used in pci-e 1x or 16x slot.

What i remark, and is odd:

you get around 2800 points using 32bit color depht.
User jix-reggio get around 3700 points using 16bit color depht.
User voodoo5k6 get around 3700 points using 32bit color depht.

if it is like that, the User voodoo5k6 ( or trevormacro ) could achieve easly 6000 points when running the benchmark on 16 bit !

V5-5500 pci on PCI-x = 3700Points
V5-5500 pci on pci slot 33Mhz = 3100Points
V5-5500 pci using pcie2pci adapter = 3100Points

Ok, mine pci2pci-e arrive today !

I get with my phenom 9850 around 2700 points, the same results as with the PCI slot. ( 32 bits )

I test the adapter in PCI-e 1x.

If i switch to 16 bit, i get also around 3400 points, with default settings, no overclock.

Increasing of the PCI-e Clock from 100 to 125 get me an aditional of 150 points, results in a score of 2850. ( 32 bit ).

So please can you post the detailled 3DM2001 se scores and compare
the triangles and point sprite scores between V5500 PCI and V5500 PCI2PCI-E.
As I explain I got better performances on these items with PCI2PCI-E on 3DM2001 se.

Maybe Koolsmokey can help us here.

I believe that a bit of the PCI status register must be set to 1 to show that the bridge is 66MHz capable to the system.
( a similar mod like the one for the agp2pci adapter )

Maybe it is possbile to set this bit via software, as jix-reggio stated.

Can you discuss this issue with Koolsmokey ?

i come accros to this utillity ( equivalent on windows for command lspci from linux ) :
SIV - sistem information viewer
can be founded here: http://rh-software.com/

look on the information regarding the bridge ! Supports 66MHz !

I read the old posts, where Koolsmokey advice to mask the Pin 49 on the AGP2PCI adapter.

I put both Photos together, AGP2PCI and PCI2PCIE.

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg26.imageshack.us%2Fimg26%2F9682%2Fvornevmef.jpg&hash=4ecf304733d24dd7e29781a6ec8e0e6fdce8d921)

Also i measure if the pin 49 on the PCI2PCIE adapter is connected to the ground.
The answer is yes, Pin 49 is connected to the Ground.

The Pin 49 ( M66EN ) on the voodoo5 is also connected to the ground.
I understand that if Pin49 is connected to the ground, then the card will operate @33Mhz.

If M66EN is high, then the system may run the bus at up to 66Mhz.
If M66EN is low, then the system may only run the bus up to 33Mhz.

Question: if we isolate the pin 49, ( and connect it to a pullup resitor to Vcc ) would the adapter work @66MHz ?

Nice info Radu!

Question- So, why not to ISOLATE the PIN49 (M66EN) directly in the V5-5500 PCI.

Oscar.

We can try: isolate pin 49, on adapter or on the voodoo, or both !

Let's wait for a confirmation from Koolsmokey :)

BTW: I am interested why the voodoo is working in a PCI-X slot....the pin 49 is also conected to the ground, and therefore the voodoo should work @33MHz.

GOOD NEWS!

Adapter works to 66MHz if you isolate the PIN49 directly on V5-5500 PCI.

I tested it and now I got 3700 points using pcie2pci adapter!

Good Work Osckhar !

You gave me interesting info. So, good work you as well!

Isolating directly the V5-5500 PCI forces  pcie2pci adapter to work to 66MHz.

If we don't want to isolate the V5. Then we should mod the pcie2pci directly in the PIN49 to force it works 66MHz.

Finally, we have managed to get the adapter works for our loved 3Dfx cards.

@Radu,

Install WinXP and uses Beta Kool driver with agp2pci adapter bug fixed and let me know. I am sure your adapter will work ok.

Remember- Core used on SFFT driver has a bug when your are using any chip bridge. This bug were fixed by Kool in such realease driver. Without any adapter chip bridge SFFT works ok but when adapter is used then the card is penalized in the performance.

Next step would be if SFFT wants to fix such bug in his amazing driver. He only needs to talk with Kool.

ok, so i had here an old hard drive, and i install on it the winXP - special to test if the adapter is working or not @66MHz.

The answer is no.[B)]
I install the Koolsmokey driver, the SFFT, and Amigamerlin: with every of this drivers, i get around 2900 points....so it's working @33MHz.
Aida64 still detects that the pci2pciecard doesn't support 66MHz !

I tested the adapter in PCIe 1x and 16x. - same result
I used two V5 5500 PCI with different bioses. - same result.
I used sell tape to isolate the pin49B on the V5 and to be sure i unsolder the pin on the pci2pcie adapter. - same result.

Btw. i install Koolsmokey and Amigamerlin R3.11 driver under Win7 too, to test them. The performance is low, they are wrking but the 3dmark result is around 1400 points - i belive that the card is working in single chip mode.

@Osckhar: Please post some pictures with your moded card, and with the adapter.
Did Aida64 detect now your pci2pciecard with 66Mhz support ?
Please check if the Pin49B on your pci2pcie adapter is conected to the ground. If not, where is conected ? ( to VDD )

If somebody has other ideeas please coment [:p]

I got exactly the same information than you with Everest.
1/ V5500 Pci (pc version) is told to be '66 mhz capable' but this item is not mentionned as 'activated'.
2/ PEX8112 is told to be 'Master capable' but not '66 mhz capable'.

I am not a specialist, but If we want to run the bridged V5500 @66mhz we have to
take in consideration hardware, bios and software informations processed at the init of the system.

As the Pci-E link is told to negociate by software its capabilities at the init,
it is not sure there is a 'pure hardware' solution, maybe it is a mix of hard, bios and soft.

Following last Sfft post, I understood the '66 mhz capable' could to be related
to the '256 Bytes Pci configuration space'.
Everest says the pci device is '66mhz capable' when the 'status register' bit 5 is set to 1

So if PLX chip PEX 8112 would manage the 66 mhz, this bit must also to be set to 1.
Can a Software like Wpcrset update it early in the init ?

If Oschkar had find a solution, why did he not post pictures and screens of the mod ?

Mradu14, using siv was very interesting.
If you dump (click 'dump pci' on a device) you'll see the pci configuration zone at the offset 06 :

1/ For the V5500 Pci a hx value of 80BO -> Bit 15 to bit 0  -> 1000 0000 1011 0000
where bit 5 (66 mhz capable)  is set to 1.
As sfft said, the same dump of my V5500 Pci PC version proved it was 66 mhz capable.

2/ For the Plx bridge a hx value of 0010 -> 0000 0000 0001 0000
where bit 5 is set to 0. So It doesn't prove the bridge is 66 mhz capable.

As the PLX is a bridge beetween bus x/0/0 and bus y/0/0
You where mistaken by the Bus destination y (it xas the V5500) indicated as 66 Mhz capable.

@jir-reggio: Looks like i'm not the only one who is concerned about this Problem and can not sleep :D

Look at siv, my red marks :

Status is exactly the same in my configuration for voodoo5 and bridge.
But look at the BUS 3 status : 0x2220 - support 66MHz operation.
What this means exactly ? Do we use the wrong bus ?

I am not skilled in used Wcpregedit or Wpcrset softwares, but it might work to change the register status with them !

Hello,

First fo all I must say I use another model of pcie2pci adapter . With this adapter you can enable 66MHz:

Here some pictures:

MOD ADAPTER @66MHz:
(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F4383540%2Fpci2pci%2Fadapter.jpg&hash=02fcf42e67c02f706b353e1395cd2a34b74deff3)

ISOLATE V5-PCI @66MHz
(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F4383540%2Fpci2pci%2Fpci.jpg&hash=bb417f673eb7b4608a2b7d4158fae1d3ad7e15aa)

Here some test using 3DMark2001SE:

All the settings to default. No overclock or tweeks.

Note- Important to use Beta Kool driver if you use SFFT driver the performance is low because this core has a bug when adapter (sli bridge) is used and SLI configuration does not work well.

Oscar.

I have used SFFT 18 because jointly with v.19 is the most fast (fastet mode). Later version 19 until v47 seems to be a problem in D3D in fastet mode (3DMark does not work, only in single mode). It is fixed in vers. 48 but the performance is penalized.

@sfft : do you want a sfft 1.6 test on XP32 with and without FSAA *2 on a V5500 Pci-E bridged ?

@oschkar : news about the pci dump of the Pericom and voodoo5 device ?

@M14radu : the dump of your PLX device indicates status 0010 so the bit 5 is set to 0, at opposite AGP device indicates status 0020 where bit 5 is effectively set to 1.

I read that during the init the conditions for 66 mhz Pci setting of the bridge would be :
1/ the 2 devices are tested on bit 5 set to 1
2/ The motherboard set a signal on the M66EN pin that must be returned.
So I would understand if isolating the M66EN works because the signal is not grounded ? (sorry for beeing a noob on electrical knowledge :))

@sfft : the 1.6 don't install correctly on win XP32 on my machine. Don't know why, maybe I would have cleaned all the previousdrivers and the win register (regedit) but I had not the time .

Description of the problem :
I installed after using Amiga 3 R11 and without cleaning the windows register. After setup boot, new drivers selected and reboot, the screen is blocked on 4 bits or 8 bits resolution. I remember it is for this reason that, on XP, I continued with Amiga 3.R11.

For Sffttools, maybe in february I made observations in the dedicated topic problems with the tools.

The 1.6 version was (in my mind) for Windows 7 32 bits, and it works great on this OS.

Did you try to edit the register with wpcredit ?

I want to connect supermicro CSE-RR2UE-AX card on any motherboard ( with pci express 16x ).

Only on supermicro motherboard there is Supermicro Enhance Power Connector next to Pci express slot.

I want to find a solution any motherboard with pci express slot 8x or 16x.

How can i do ?

I have already PCI express 8x extender cable.

I need SEPC Cable ( Supermicro Enhance Power Connector ).

Where can i find it ? if anyone help me ?

(This adaptor allow to connect all voodoo 5 Pci or Agp card on any MB at 66 Mhz.)

thanks in advance

As I thought, the tape on pin 49b didn't work.
@oschkar : can you post the pci dump of your pericom bridge and V5500 if it is running fine.

Any power user to explain why an insolator tape on pin 49b
supporting M66EN motherboard signal at the init would help to run @66 mhz ?
Or to explain how to proceed with pericom or plx bridge  ?
Thanks to share good ideas ...

That is not good [B)]
I wait also for the pci dump from osckhar voodoo5 and bridge.
After that we can see what must be change.

I hope that we don't need to buy another adapter to have our voodoo5 running @66MHz [:p]

@jix-reggio: i use the utility "RW-Everything" for changing the registers.
Look here: http://jacky5488.myweb.hinet.net/

This tool must do the job now too [:p]

Here:
http://www.voodooalert.de/board/index.php?page=Thread&postID=314132#post314132

this video card GT430 PCI from Zotac uses the same PLX bridge.

Maybe the register status from this card can help us :) if this card runs @66MHz then we can use the same register configuration.

Would be also interesting to know the status of the pin49b on this card, and were this goes :)

I try to change the register of the PLX chipset with the "RW-Everything" application.

Is ( 33MHz) : hx value of 0010 -> 0000 0000 0001 0000
Must ( 66Mhz ): hx value of 0030 -> 0000 0000 0011 0000

After changing the register, the value change itself automaticaly back in 1-2 seconds.
[B)][B)][B)]

Well, this behaviour tells me that the register must be changed via hardware mod, and not with a simple software.

This is my PCI dump:

mee too, but without luck.
I think that the only way is to subscribe to PLX, and then we can get the datasheets and the SDK too.

I make some test with Startech PCIetoPCI adaptor. Pericom Chip.

Motherboard : P35 DS4 ( intel q6600 2,4 ghz 4Gb ddr2 RAM )

With 3dmark2001se :

On PCIexpress16x slot , I've got 3340 marks. ( pcietopci not modded, v5500 pci not modded )

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg16.imageshack.us%2Fimg16%2F999%2Fnotmodded.jpg&hash=411c88ff0b2c2c8915f7aeeaf1320e595980994f)

On PCI simple Slot, I've got 3065 marks.

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg849.imageshack.us%2Fimg849%2F2244%2Fnotmoddedonpcislot.jpg&hash=8bc29b0473dd416018fa19c72dd97716330ee380)

Conclusion :

>I think this adaptor put 66 mhz when you connect V5500 pci on it with PCIexpress.
When i connect v5500 pci on PCI slot i have less marks.

This is normal.
The PCI slot will operate @33Mhz even if you mask the pin49b on the voodoo5.
Masking the Pin49b will help only in combination with the pcie2pci adapter..only in this combination 66Mhz are possible.

Let's come back to our PLX8112 :)
I've read the datasheet of the PLX and the only question now is:
How to set M66EN high ?

@osckhar: can you please check if the pin49b on your PERICOM adapter is grounded ?

Thanks mate ;)

I am thinking about this issue.

On Voodoo5, pin 49b acts on M66EN settings. Masking this pin affects 66MHz mode on the Pericom bridge (from what I heard), while it doesn't on the PLX bridge. Maybe for the different bridge's designs.

To ENable 66MHz Mode (M66EN) we must put M66EN on High; reading the PEX8112 databook, this is not the only condition:

Assuming we put M66EN on High, PCLKO will be setted to 0011b because is it for default, but PCLKO62SEL# must be on High as well or left disconnected at least.

M66EN and PCLKO62SEL# are D10 and C2 balls respectively on the chip ball grid array; desolder the C2 (disconnect PCLKO62SEL#) would be a first step, but near impossible unless a huge and deep adapter's rework.

Last but not least, I am thinking about BUS bandwidth.

PCI66 standard allows 266MB/s data transfert (4Byte*66.6MHz)
PCIe x1 standard allows 250MB/s data transfert (since 10bit encoding, @100MHz)

One of the reasons this bridge can select 62.5MHz instead of 66MHz, could be jitter frequency; indeed 4Byte*62.5MHz=250MB/s, same bandwidth as PCIe x1 specs.

In any case we have a little but still present bottle-neck that cuts off about 16MB/s

Supermicro's adapter probably can use the full PCI66 bandwidth, but still I find it uncomfortable and no user-friendly due its design.

PLX makes also the PEX8114 bridge chip that supports PCI 3.0 (32/64bit @33/50/66MHz) and PCI-X 1.0 (64bit @66/100/133MHz) specifications, forwarding to PCIe interface up to x4 that for the aim is more than enough.

I found an adapter equipped with this bridge:

Thanks for the informations goriath !

I read it carefully and search on the PCB the position of the C2.
Unfortunately the pins on the back side are not on the same position as from the front side.
This make almost impossible to find out the pin C2.

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg151.imageshack.us%2Fimg151%2F2751%2F20110811100430.jpg&hash=1ceb3c8bd136e0fc62bad637242e549828c0f967)

Do you have an ideea how to find it ?

Did somebody else manage to find out the position of the C2 ?

One ideea is to write an email to PLX, mayb they can help us with some hints :D

In FBGA designs, pins (balls) are located underside the BGA chip, like VSA-100 for example.

So desolder C2 means desolder the entire bridge first, than reball it exept for C2 and finally resolder the chip on the adapter through a good hot air station at least, or IR station would make it professionally.

Ya, it isn't a easy task.

BTW, still remain the question why the bridge won't set itself @66MHz if the graphics adapter installed is 66MHz capable.

If was like you said, this adaptor wouldn't support 66MHz, although it has this bridge.

I suppose that ball D10 (M66EN) is grounded for 33MHz operation.

it's possible that D10 is grounded via a resistor, right ?
on the back side are some resistors ...one of them maybe connect the D12 to ground...
it's there a possibility to find that out ? ( whithout to unsolder the bridge ) [}:)]

Yes, I was thinking the same.
We could try to analize the tracks eventually seeking for a resistor, but actually I don't own any of these adapters[:I]

All I can do (without the adapter in hands) is try to guess where D10 and C2 could be on the backside of the adapter:

BLUE DOTS=GND

According to my guessing, D10 and C2 aren't grounded by resistors.

D10 for example seems to be grounded directly

Note the cursive, I can't be sure of this without the adaptor in hands, since I can't see tracks on the frontside of the adapter; the best way to find out what we need is reverse-engineering the adapter:D

Yes i agreed with you.
Reverse engineering =unsolder the bridge...this is the best way.

Asumming that you are right about the position of the C2 and d10..should we try to cut the connection to the ground and see the results ( see the yellow marks )?
If yes, how do you suggest to do this ?
What kind of tools should be used to interupt the circuit layer ?

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg543.imageshack.us%2Fimg543%2F3304%2F201181123442balls.jpg&hash=d7ff04d9ccff8e1744b6114ed193ddef59914f00)

L.E: I check with the multimeter, and after scratching a little bit these areas to get to the cooper, i found out that these points are connected to ground.

QuoteL.E: I check with the multimeter, and after scratching a little bit these areas to get to the cooper, i found out that these points are connected to ground.

Great news! [:p]

So there are good chances I was right. Well, If I was you, I would try first to cut the track between the point I was supposed to be D10 and the respective GND and than try the adapter. A cutter could do the job. In the case you will want to restore the adapter to original conditions, should be possible rejoint the track with a bit patience.

Note that this is only what I would do if I had my own adapter; cannot guarantee that will works @66MHz or even that the adapter will still work after the mod, since we should study also the tracks on the frontside of the adapter first to say what must be done;). I cannot take any responsibility.

If you are planning to do this mod, I suggest you a simple cutter. Cut the track in two points, then remove the portion (about 1mm) cutted as follows:

O===|=|===O

If the mod had success, I would solder a micro-switch between D10 and GND, in order to switch on or off the mod in anytime[8D]

So disabling triple buffering adds about 100 to the score, which is about what I expected. The DDI version number set < 9 should change the image that is rendered not the performance. The change is in the Car Chase high detail test when going round the first bend. When DD = 9 the data should be rendered correctly.
You need to change the DDI version number to 8 not 7 to see a difference DDI = 9 and DDI = 7 give the same result DDI = 8 gives a different result.

I'm back again with some news :)

My Pericom adapter arrived today, thanks to Osckhar !

Of course that some tests were inevitable [:p]

I will compare it also with the PLX adapter, that i also own.

3Dmark2001 - 3307 points, without any kind of overclocking.

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg827.imageshack.us%2Fimg827%2F1831%2Fpericom3.jpg&hash=a64ef68e119df3b8fb4944568e662416bec07538)

With PLX i get around 2950 points.

About the 66Mhz or 33Mhz operation...
First of all, in all aplications there is no sign that the adapter is running @66Mhz !
Look here in Aida software...( same status as with the PLX adapter )

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg840.imageshack.us%2Fimg840%2F4828%2Fpeicom2.jpg&hash=0ccf2d9fcc6b21464ed5a726f7c9ae7452745988)

I take a look also with the SIV application:

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg192.imageshack.us%2Fimg192%2F176%2Fpericom1.jpg&hash=c2cf136b7bcf780ab93b9acf29550fa01bdc0250)

I was amazed to see that the status of the pericom adapter are the same as for the PLX adapter !

The Status of Pericom adapter is also 0x0010 ! ( same as PLX, were bit 5 is 0 -> 33 Mhz ) - here i expect the Bit 5 to be set to 1 !
The status of Voodoo5 also the same as when using the PLX adapter 0x80B0. ( this is normal )

For the Pericom adapter i get the information that the current clock is 33Mhz/66Mhz !...not very explicit...[B)]

And..i thought that the next stept is to mod the adapter with the sale tape ...i mod the adapter 3 times, using differents tapes.
Also i used 3 different voodoo5 cards, that i own.
Everytime there was no boot, no start..just black screen.

The adapter won't work if the pin 49b is covered with tape.
I checked also if the Pin49b is connected to ground. And the answer is YES, the same as by the PLX adapter !

Another intersting thing...one of my 3 voodoo5 has a custom bios flashed...this card works very well in the pci slot....but when using it together with the pericom adapter leads to system freeze !
That was not happent with the PLX adapter....that's indicates that the pericom adapter more sensible is as the PLX adapter !

@Osckhar and voodoo56k :
You own also this adapter.
Can you please take a look what Aida and SIV applications reports ( in your sistems ) ?
Some screenshots will be nice !
Thanks guys ! :D

Post by: m14radu on 27 October 2011, 12:11:25
The pericom adapter seems to be very instable.
Sometimes runs very well sometimes lead to sysrem freezes.
I test it with 3 differents voodoo5 5500 pci cards and the behavioir is the same.
The cards are running well with the plx adapter or in the pci slot.
Thats why i assume that the adapter is not very stable.
Or maybe its a compatibility problem with my mobo.
The adapter was tested in both pcie slots...no differences!

I test the adapter in win7 and winxp with different drivers..including sfft, amigamerlin and koolsomkey....
Example: the system freeze in 3dmark2001 on the first two tests...

@osckhar and voodoo56k: did you notice this instability too?

V5 PCI@189Mhz + Pericom pci2pcie Adapter + Win XP + Koolsmokey Driver

(https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg80.imageshack.us%2Fimg80%2F9486%2Fkoolsmokeyat189pericom.jpg&hash=7de282f9c43f129158b535edc94f31b3f4ea7027)

Without overclocking the voodoo, the score is 3300 points.
So that rising the clock from 166Mhz to 189Mhz adds 431 points !
The 4000points wall is not far, and can be achieved with a 200Mhz voodoo5 :D

Anyway, the score is a proof enough for me that the adapter is working @66Mhz, and NO modding ( sell tape on Pin49B ) is required !

I notice that in WinXP the Pericom adapter is more stable that under Win7.
In Win7 the lookups are very frecvently, in WinXP very very rare !
Responsible for this could be also the Pericom Driver.

Even overclocked, the voodoo5 is not able to play HD movies...

Hello 3dfx happy owners worlwide !
:)
In a few days, January 29, it will be the first anniversary for the Voodoo5 5500 PCi bridged on PCI-Express.
A great party, is'n it ?
On this occasion, I invite on my thread  all those who have a configuration Voodoo5 5500 PCI-Express to mail one to two pictures to show their configuration and if possible how they integrated into the case.
Come on from Germany, Netherlands, China, Canada, USA, Japan, Marocco, Czechoslovakia, Slovenia, etc ...  And show us your Voodoo5 5500 pci-express !

can someone having a PCI-X Adapter and some real PCI-X (Raid/LAN) do me a favor and see if it´s working @66Mhz or more and 64bit?
Would be very helpful for me!

Details on the '66mhz boost' offered by Pci-express bridging.

Tested with SFFT 1.9 on my configuration running on Win7.
The Opteron CPU clocked @2800 mhz and the V5 5500 pci-express clocked I/O @66 mhz and core @180 mhz
leads to a 4133 points 3Dmark2001 score with the following parameters : 1024*768 / 16 bits color / Double Buffer.

Look at the '66Mhz boost' on Triangles, Vertex shaders and Point Sprite tests.

Test whether a V5 5500 PCI operates at 66 MHz.
Rather than read the technical information provided by hardware software like Aida, Everest, SIV, etc ... which sometimes lacks of clarity, I propose to perform a practical test, the benchmark 3DM2001 SE.
The relevant informations are part of tests that evaluate the theoretical performance of the card, and are listed here:
High polygon count  1Light and 8Light (triangles)
Vertex shaders
Point sprite
Such information estimate the ability of the GPU to generate basic forms which will constitute the skeleton of the image. On a Voodoo, which subcontracting the 'Transform and Lightning' (T & L) to the CPU, this flow of Triangles, Vertex and Point Sprite depends greatly on the speed of exchanges between GPU and CPU, so it will be a good indicator of the PCI bus frequency which is by default 33 Mhz (PC Voodoo) or 66 MHz (Voodoo Mac).
By cons, applying textures on basic forms, which essentially uses local resources of the card, depends on the frequency of the GPU and the video RAM (166 MHz default), so this will be a good indicator for overclocking the GPU.
I emphasize that these are basic explanations, but it would be interesting for hardware or software specialists explain more precisely how the 3dfx Voodoo5 perform a 3D rendering and discuss this topic, for example to improve the drivers.
Some information in French avaiable here: http://www.erenumerique.fr/vertex_shaders_et_pixel_shaders-art-70-2.html

According to my tests, here are some ranges of values I found to interpret the bench, depending on CPU power:

If this can help.

Ehm, that's getting more and more "mysterious".  :D
But i like the idea of a "Budget solution".
Of course, the perfect idea would be to get an adapter agp/pci, this way nobody (with a V5 agp) would be left on the side.

Hello Nightbird
Budget solution: with these chips you cannot be wrong :

http://www.pericom.com/pdf/databriefs/PI7C9X112SL_db.pdf

I am currenly working on a mysterious board, that's right.
Hope to show something this month.
:D

Edit :
These chips are made by PERICOM and allows 66Mhz Voodoo5 running.
PLX Tech. PEX8112 chip did not allow 66Mhz running for the different
users reporting in the previous pages of this topic, but maybe it is possible.

Sorry you must be mistaken, Pericom and PLX tech.
are 2 different companies and the chip indicated
is completely different from PEX811x series.

It can run @66mhz and find easily an adapter
on your retailer as the Intel 1U IPC server.

I know that Pericom and PLX are 2 different companies.
But i see bridges between the Pci Express lane and the PCI bus (both support forward and reverse bridging and it seems to me that the PLX 811x was also able to run up 66 mhz)
But until you spoke about Pericom, i only knew the PLX chip.

edit : PLX Technology -> PEX 811x

@everyone : Adapters/risers based on Pericom's chips PI7C9X111SL and PI7C9X112SL (datasheets in Pericom website linked in my precedent post) costs 40 euros in Europe (maybe less in US or Asia) and can run (tested and ok) your Voodoo 4 or 5 pci @66mhz for a low price, instead of more expensive adapters.

Edit:
@Nightbird: I gave you the best info I could following your question.

@Voodoo56k: adapter spotted in 2011, Yeah !
Not sure I will use Pericom or others, or this one :

After a little over a year, and although I am not an expert on 3dfx, I want to make a preliminary conclusion of this topic on the use of bridges PCI-Express to PCI (or PCI-X ) with Voodoo5 5500 PCI (Version 'PC' or version 'Mac').

Question: What is there on the topic?
Thanks to contributions from each other, we have reviewed different solutions of  risers / adapters Pci-E to PCI (or PCI-X). These solutions were based on PLX chips or Pericom.

Most work with a PCI-E 1x interface and some (more expensive) with a PCI-E 4x or 8x interface (such as riser Supermicro RSC-RR1UE-AXL, but the bandwidth negotiated at the initialization is a maximum of 4x).
These solutions require an additional power connector.
You will find references by browsing through the pages of the topic.
Here is an article from 2006 showing one of the first PciE2Pci adapters :
http://www.presence-pc.com/actualite/adaptateur-pci-express-16756/

The first bridges tested (chip PEX8111 or PEX8112) allowed to run V5 5500 @ 33mhz with a performance boost of about 5% -7% due to the passage of shared PCI bus to the non shared serial PCI-Express bus.

Through overclocking the bus PCI-Express @ 125 in the bios, we were able to operate V5 5500 @ 40MHz with a performance boost of 10-15%.

Finally, the use of adapters from server technology (Supermicro, Startech, etc ...) we were able to run the V5 5500 @ 66 mhz with a performance boost of 25-30%.

Question: How do I find these adapters and at what price?
They can be easily found for sale on the Internet or in stores computer components. Please note prices are highly variable and range from 20 to 100 USD, so you have to shop around.  Depending on the height of the adapter and the orientation of the Pci-E connector, you should use a thick case or customize a little to install the V5 5500.

Question: why the performance of a V5 5500 are improved by 20-25% with PciE2pci adapter forcing the PCI interface at a 66 mhz frequency ?
The use of such an adapter leads to multiply about 4 the theoretical bandwith (250 Mbytes / sec full duplex) between 3dfx card and CPU. Found on the German site Voodooalert.de is a very good test that shows that the interface 3dfx <-> CPU is really a bottleneck for the V5 5500 PCI.
http://www.voodooalert.de/de/content/tests/agp_vs_pci_v44500.php

With the adapter PciE2pci forcing the 66 MHz mode, performances will scale with a powerfull CPU which will ensure T&L, geometry assist and if necessary software emulation for DX7-8 support.

Nice work jix-reggio !

Seem that the v5 pex turbo is performing very well...

Btw. what adapter did you use ?
Actually i am not very happy with my pci2pcie adapters:
- the PLX adapter is stable but is working only @33Mhz
- the Pericom adapter is very unstable, but is working @66Mhz. I get with Pericom adapter a lots of system hang-ups in win7 - in XP it's a little bit more stable...
The hang ups occurs in the 3dMArk2001 ALWAYS in the char chase test. This is the critical moment, if this test pass then until the next PC reboot everything is running ok.

And please is possbile to see the construction in detail ? The voodoo5, adapter and the fron grill with 3dfx logo ?
I like the blue light too :D

Adapter or Voodoo on too heavy load ?
Try to downclock.
Or a file corruption ?
You have to eliminate each case of default... ;)
An what is actually your configuration ?

I use Startech Intel server, based on Pericom's chip PI7C9X111SL or PI7C9X112SL (datasheets in Pericom website linked in a previous post).
More pics in 2 or 3 weeks.

My perciom adapter is based on Pericom's chips PI7C9X111SL chipset.
The same as you sugested above.

I use an AM2 Mobo with a Phenom 9850, and SFFT 1.9 driver, Win7. Nothing is overclocked, the PCIe bus is running on 100Mhz, and the voodoo5 on 166Mhz.
The PCIe bus cannot be changed under 100Mhz ( Oscar sugestion was to lower this bus to increase stability ). Ony upper values are alowed in bios. ( 100 to 250 Mhz )
The pericom adapter is not modded ( pin 49b is not masked ).

I try to mod the adapter, but the system don't start anymore.
Only a black screen. NO boot, no beep..nothing..
I bought the adapter from Oschar, and he manage to run the adapter by masking this pin. I believe that is a Mobo issue....

Without the adapter the voodoo5 card runs well..no lookups. The same with the PLX adapter, no problems.

With the Pericom adapter the 3dMark freeze sometimes and only a cold start help.

for now, I am far from the place where I have my hardware.
I can not test, nor play, nor do pictures, it's for later.

Feel free to post benches or tests for '66 mode',
but please don't post uncomplete results (ie Caps tests missing in 3dm2001).
It is useless as Sfft said once to me (and he was right!).

I wish I had power users opinion about pixel shaders 1.1
of the 'advanced pixel shader'  test in my video.

I had already done this test with 3DA emulation ,
but I never got such a nice quality.
It's amazing that a 3dfx could show shadows, reflections in water,
transparency  and swiming fishes !
Maybe 'my 3dfx best moment' !
Do other V6000 or V5500 users had already seen these shaders ?

This new video will replace the other.

This result 3DMark2001 has no value.
It lacks all hardware featuressupported by the card results.
I wonder why you're hiding these results? Photoshop screen ?
I have already said it was necessary to deliver complete results on this topic, .

I don't know what you want.
My results are good with all informations.
Show me a screen with all informations you want? I don't understand.

Hardwares:

- Asus Maximus IV Extreme with Intel Core i7 2600k @3,4 GHz. (DDR3 RAM)
- Supermicro PCIexpress8x to PCI-X adaptor.

You've got 3564 marks @187 MHZ.
I've got 4306 marks @186 MHz.

I think the best adaptor is Supermicro.
Your PEX turbo is not so fast.
Try to use it on Core i7/i5 and let me know ;)

Look this topic:

I've got 4697 marks directly on PCI-X slot.

The game4 test doesn't increase my score.
With or without it, the score will be the same.
Be cool man, do not judge people ;)
In futur I will do a complete benchmark even if I have the same score.

Oh, well, I'm very cool if you ask me[8D]

But nobody are obsessed by stupid scores like you.

Again, you always missed the following tests:

Fill Rate
High Polygon Count
Bump Mapping (actually not supported)
Vertex Shaders (dx8)
Point Sprites (dx8)

What you still don't understand is that jix-reggio is not necessarily interested in score, but how the bandwidth (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/bandwidth.html) affects these results, in particularly Vertex Shaders and Point Sprites tests.

So, keep calm, nobody here is interested to race, except you.

Post by: jix-reggio on 05 July 2012, 15:59:57
Hello.
I wanted to stop the topic for the following reasons:
The topic has served its purpose.
All those interested in this topic may find the information
you need to install a Voodoo5 5500 PCI (PC version) on
a port Pci-express by activating the PCI 66 Mhz mode
on the Voodoo5. The Voodoo4 Pci (PC version) works well too.

Depending on the motherboard and CPU used,
the performance increase of 10% to 50%!
Apart from the aesthetic and the choice of PCI-E bridge 66mhz,
the cards are the same, except that of Voodoo56K,
I know one on Sandy Bridge and mine on Opteron.

So obviously I do not race at 3dmark score with a Core i7
because I keep my setup Asrock + Opteron which allows me
to test Voodoos on PCI-E 16x, PCI-E 1X, Agp 2x, 4x, 8x,
PCI 32 bits slots with a BIOS that allows me finetuning
for FSB, PCI-E frequency, PCI, AGP, voltage, Ram, etc ...

The second reason to stop is the lack of interest
and lack of participation in technical discussions
on the Voodoo5. I am not an expert, but it interested me to understand how to get the best from Voodoo5.

I gave detailed evidence of improved treatment of geometry and increasing global performance.
I know there are real experts of 3dfx, as Sfft, Koolsmoky,
Komponent, Donovan G, Obiwan and others who have made a lot,
but they must be gone.

Third reason, I do not have much time for 3dfx testing.

As our friend Voodoo56K finally provided us complete results
that are interesting, I've changed my mind. :)
I will come back soon as I have time.

I just make a note in my 'final user' rather than 'power user' language.

The architecture of the V5500,
2 Vsa-100 on a 128 bit bus @ 166 MHz, if I'm not mistaken,
is a very good architecture.
The V5500 PCI / PCI-E greatly benefits of 66mhz mode
for geometry processing and scales well with processor power.
It is limited by its low theoretical and actual fillrate.
To improve it, there's o / c. Maybe the drivers?

I just saw that some falconfly's power users had connected their V5500 Agp on Pci or Pci-express mobos via Osckhar AGP 5 adapter (66mhz).
It is very interesting.
I would like to get more info about these V5500 Agp bridged performances. For example 3dmark2001 results to compare Pci and Agp.

------

Edit : Thanks for M14radu, Oschkar and other participants of this topic who helps me.
M14radu, for the unstable pericom adapter, if pin 49 masked, unmask it because it works well without(you use the same adapter than me, if I am not mistaken), then I suggest you to try in order and in the Motherboard bios:
1 / releasing slightly of the Ram in the  integrated cpu controller  (because the lock is very similar to a freeze of ram)
2 / falling clock PCI-E to 95 mhz (but I think your bios will not allow it) so try to set 101 (or 102) mhz.
3 / try with a latency of 64 clocks for Pci bus-mastering.

Question: Does the HDD work a lot at the time of locking in the test Car chase? If this is the case, you should improve disk access.

As an explanation for the 66 mhz instability, I suggest it can may be due to the fast 'back-to-back' Pci transactions used by the V5500 pci to improve the bandwidth, like the Agp V5500 uses the SBA.

yes, falling clock PCI-E under 100Mhz was also suggested by Osckhar.
Unfortunately the bios didn"t allow me to go under 100Mhz. I will try to go up to 101, 102 Mhz, to see what is happent.

thanks for the info, i will try the adapter asap :)

Hello Mradu, for your instable Pericom adapter
I suggest to check power wires are firmly connected,
check the 4 pins connector of the bridge, it must
be completely pushed into the PSU female connector.
I experienced problems related to this 4 pins
ie : behaviour in 2D OK, but D3D bugs (in dxdiag or in 3dmark).
Maybe it can help.

I'm late.

Hi Mradu,
 So you can't fix this ? Huh, it's a hassle !
[:(]

As I said I bought a « Startech PEX1PCI1R for Intel server 1U » converter
This item is based on Pericom PI7C9111SL 66 mhz capable chip. The datasheet is very clear about this.
Here is a link on the adapter i bougt :
http://fr.startech.com/Cartes-Aditionelles-et-Peripheriques/Extension-de-fente/Carte-riser-PCI-Express-vers-PCI-x1-pour-serveur-IPC-Intel-1U~PEX1PCI1R

In my PC, it rans fine and stable, excepted when I did'nt connect correctly the 4 pins power wire as I said before. In the bios I just set the Pci burst lenght to 64 cycles and the Pci-E freq. to 100 or 101 mhz. I tested both on Pci-E 16X and 1X motherboard slots.

For the moment I cannot play with my hardware.

As stated in the datasheet, the chip needs 10% power more @66mhz (740 mW), you could try to set a dissipator on it to improve the cooling.

The V5500 Pci can run @70 mhz with Pci-E overclocking.

On Pci-E 105 mhz clock speed my V5500 is very stable on my Asrock Dual-Sata S939 motherboard.

I use a mezzanine card.

The Motherboard is fastened to the case with spacers, maybe 5mm, and secured with screws.

Remove the screws.
Use the mounting holes of the motherbord.

- If you can, fasten directly the riser into MB mounting holes with  15mm spacers
because 15mm is the height of a plastic pci or agp connector.
Adjust height with washers and secure with screws.

- Plan "B", the riser don't fit MB mounting holes.
Use a mezzanine between MB and riser.

Cut a custom mezzanine plate (steel, plexi, etc) to size.
Drill holes matching with MB mounting holes, fasten with 15mm spacers and washers  to the MB.
Fasten the riser on the mezzanine in the same way with spacers.
Secure with screws.

From this perspective, it appears more clearly
how integrates the fan in a metal fairing cutted
around the 100mm.
The electrical connections are set and hidden inside.

Small refinements: the fairing as
the perforated plate are black painted
inside to help absorbing
the heat which radiates from the pcb.

A simple mobile pivotal
can give to the fan an angle of 5-10 degrees
in order to eject more hot air out of the case.

Before customize, create a restore point.

For a custom driver, edit driver package .inf file,
search for your device ID and char string, update relevant
data, save file and exit, run GPU driver update procedure,
select manual update, have disk, browse to  updated .inf file,
press OK, reboot when required, enjoy customized driver.

For a custom 3dfxtools pannel, create a new 115x87 pixels bitmap,
add to the reference pictures set folder, open tools, open 3dfx color menu, press change bitmap button, select new bitmap, enjoy customized pannel.

Hello Glide and community, and thanks for showing my 3dfx Windows 10  PC.
I just wanted to show my V5 could run on the new OS,
have not enough time to custom,
but maybe power users will find improvments.
No trick on my video.

My machine is based on P5WDH, E7500 and 4 Go DDR2.
As you can see on the attached picture,
the VGA driver gives me 1,7 Go (!)
of shared memory, 2D, and Aero transparency.
Runs smoothly, but standard resolution is limited to 1280*1024.

As the 1014x768 score seemed weak for gaming
I ran the bench at a lower resolution : 800x600.
Looks better.
Fillrate seems to be a bottleneck, but geometry looks fine
with 8,7 M - 5,4 M polygons/second.
I quicly tested overclock of 3 parameters to increase my score.
Cpu speed, V5 i/o speed and ddr2 latency.
Higher Cpu and i/o helps, but lower ddr2 latency doesn't.

Bench 800x600 2087 points.

Well to be very honest this is nothing special even  has no real point on doing either.
All because everything with the help of software emulation will get every card working with shaders, no matter if it's 3dfx based S3, ATi, NVIDIA, Trident or even SiS based, principles are the same.

Although I find these experiments useless, pointless and a pure waste of time, they have nothing really to do on what a V5 can do ina modern OS because it's all running in software mode, every VGA card can do that with the help of emulation software, software you are hiding from your inaccurate videos, rather sloppy work imo [B)]

3dfx cards are made to run games that make use of the 3dfx Glide API, most 3dfx die-hards won't really care or find it useful to use a modern new gen OS for such an old card, this isn't anything new for that part either.
My reply may be bold and careless, that is because it is well from my end, but since we have seen similar useless projects, this just feels like one of those threads all over again and it gets boring, old and dull.
It's that I am very to the point on what I find about things and I will say them as I review them, people that dislike this will have to deal with it ;)

And hey, ya can't like everything, right [:P]

You know, I have shared here all the data since July with the driver model on screens, but looks like some believed it was a fake and no one even seems have tried.

I was satisfied with a good 2D experience and a V5 running and surfing with the last OS. I no longer play games and during these months I had not even taken the time to test 3D.

In December, I was surprised when Glide asked me for more information, so I tested more and I send him some data. If he wrote this news he must be sure what he says.

"Software you are hiding from your inaccurate videos". I repeat : there is no hidden software, just the generic driver.

"Well to be very honest this is nothing special even ... "
This point you're right. There's nothing special in what I did, and anyone just had to 'waste' a little time to experiment.

Is it useful ?  My purpose was just to share. 5,000 have click on the 3dm2000 video, maybe some will find it useless, some others useful.

And still I find this test absolutely pointless, software mode or not, anything can be emulated in software mode as said, if it were rendered with 3D acceleration then it would be something new, but as said this is nothing new under the horizon.

It's just an other pointless experiment, I am a die hard x-3dfx user & ex-collector,  most of us 3dfx people used our cards for things they were made for, what you are doing is pointless and senseless, Win10 doesn't even support 3dfx Glide API, the one thing you'd use a 3dfx card for, thus this is goalless.

Win 98SE + Un-Official SP 2.3+ & Win2k Pro + SP4 are the best Operating Systems for your 3dfx cards, WinXPPro + SP3 can seem as a useful alternative, well for some, but anything later than that isn't worth it.

What is your real gain with this anyways? Why 2D? Why not try to find out to get 3D working instead?

3dfx made 3D accelerators for 3D effects in games, for 2D we had Matrox, PowerVR, NVIDIA, S3 & ATi for that part.

My Radeons & GeForce cards can do 2D as can my Matrox Cards S3 Cards and PowerVR cards can likewise.

Also I didn't see 5000 comments, just two, could be that 4998 of those people were probably not interested or surprised and didn't bother posting, but anyways, I was hoping for new research, not some redone thing many other newbies have shown.

Also 3D Mark Doesn't even have a software mode! So to get that working, you probably of used an alternative dedicated program to make that even plausible.

Sorry man, but you would have to be a lot clearer on what you really used over just leaving somethings out and making it all look spotless.

But then again my comment is what it is, as being this is a forum negative comments can happen and this is one of them.

Incorrect full of question more like it, that is if you read my post fully, yet I have doubts that you even did [B)]
Your posts lack the needed info that puts them to logical sense.
Hence my replies.

So I ask for the thirst time explain how exactly you got these tests to work without the need of emulation?
There is in no way a V5 can do pixel shader & EMBM tests, so far you have not succeeded to explain how.

It's that I ask you simple questions of info that is missing from your hypothesis..
Yet all you do is you come with defensive nonsense, rather than the logics that describe your so called tests wiih the needed accuracy.

My first video was called "3dfx Voodoo5 runs on last OS". A fact that everyone can verify himself as it is clearly explained in the new written by Glide.

Six months after, I posted "3dfx V5 performs 3dm2000" where I said @2.22 : " Offering a large range of emulated features this driver (W10 generic Vga) can keep your Voodoo5 alive... etc.".

Seems neither you look at it, nor you experiment before judging the article as "pointless, waste of time, etc".

About 3dm2000 / 2001, you know that's outdated software, it recognized the E7500 as 'PIII' and offered me 3 settings to run the test : T&L software, D3D hardware, or D3D pure hardware. I tried them, and the best performance came with D3D pure hardware.
As a 3D-Analyze connoiseur, you know that a Voodoo can't perform shaders in hardware and needs emulation, whatever setting I choose emulation was ON.

There is no conspiracy here ;) and it is useless to speak here in an unpleasant way.

Did anyone test the sfft 32 bit driver on 32 bit operating systems later than Win 7. if they have maintained the legacy driver support that was in windows 7 and it is the only display adapter it might just work.

Hello, could your driver match to the WDDM 1.3 from MS ?

Just the info that was lacking and I did watch your video's I even replied to one of them even that reply wasn't kind, just my reaction that this isn't really all to special sorry to hurt your feelings it just isn't. But other than that my bad for my bold reactions.

I Saw this as one of those multiple hard to believe wannabe threads and we had so many of such topics, but then again the only interesting factor of this project of your is that you got things to work in software mode as Win10, that you got 3D mark to run well this program isn't really opted for 3dfx cards it's quite inaccurate on how it tests things, I am not much of a 3D mark fan myself the games tell me much more, 3D Mark lacks Glide API as well lel.

Also how Win10 sees your VGA card as a standard VGA adapter and you got some things to run, yeah nice; but again everything would run in software mode since software can emulate everything, that is if the hardware in the used system allows that and the same for the OS.
That is the only way you got Pixel Shader / Vertex shader & T&L tests run on the V5, there is no other possible way, forget it.

But other than that this is kind of useless, since Win10 isn't made to run old games especially with Glide API. Win10 has very bad legacy support afaik MS removed Legacy support in Winn10 for the most of it.

Want a good new gen OS try Win7, SFFT did manage to make a driver for Win7 but then again still not an OS of choice if you want optimal glide performance from any Voodoo card.
Most people I know in the 3dfx community sticks to older operating systems to play 3dfx glide games, as they still give the best results.

So you can say what you like as your research goes, that is all fine. Each to their own for that matter anyways.
I myself don't really interest such projects, they don't offer much usable options.
But yeah you got Win10 working on a V5  but other than that it's not useful to play Glide games at solid frame rates.

My apologies for my bold replies back there, not really my intention to make you feel upset or so :)
It's that some years ago we just had a lot of nonsense posts and I mis-saw this as one of them, my bad for that, good luck with your experiments though, I am gonna stick to a real OS for my V5's. Win2K Pro + SP4 and nothing much else [:o)]

I read on voodooalert.de website that a german user test it and explain that a pci-E converter is not necessary to run the V5.
Says he performs a very good 3dm2001 2800 score but not documented.
http://www.voodooalert.de/board/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=22482

Maybe some would like to see if unreleased cards could run in emulation mode.
My contribution is now over and I just wish some will enjoy V5 on Windows 10.

It would have been be useful if you showed the result 'details' on 3dm2001 to see the score at each test and informations about your configuration hard and software.

sadly I did not, I was hoping that someone else would have already tried it,
also unfortunately for my country it usually takes 2 months+ for stuff from aliexpress to arrive, I see some buyers comments there, but they are poorly translated and I don't see anyone mentioning testing it at 66MHz or with video cards.

I finally tried SFFT's hint to use Win 10 32bit. Unfortunately it behaves like 64bit. The driver (SFFT or Amigamerlin) can be installed, but afterwards the device manager says "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware".

It's a little sad we can't use the most powerful 3dfx cards under Windows 10, especially because the Voodoo 2 works. I documented my experiments here:

https://robertkrau.se/posts/3dfx-voodoo-2-with-windows-10
https://robertkrau.se/posts/3dfx-voodoo-2-sli-with-windows-10

Any ideas or driver modifications I could try? I would love to have a way how we can enjoy Voodoos without depending on legacy hardware (except the Voodoos of course).

As for PCI-e adapters, I tried a few different models. Only the ones with the PLX PEX8112 chip seem to work. Beware of the adapters you can see here, the do not seem to support graphic cards.

Does the Voodoo 5 PCI with the PCIe adapter work with Windows 98? I know on a software level PCIe is the same as PCI - PCI config space registers, bus-dev-func addresing scheme, etc. - curious if this is the case.

the pcix adapter i test were all ok, i did not notice any performance drop between them. The model i used you can find in my older posts.
post some pictures with your setup !
