Post by: MUDASS on 06 July 2005, 05:08:27
Hi, I'm using a v5 5500 agp and I have a v3 2000 pci sleeping on the shelf.   Would it be worth it to make them work sli?  And is it possible ?

sb live!
v5 5500 agp 64mb

That is absolutely impossible.

the V3 pci makes for an EXCELLENT 2nd video card for a two monitor system though......

Not possible and senseless, too. Voodoo5 and Voodoo3 in SLi would result in waiting times for the V5 'cause the V3 is slower. There would be no gain in speed ...

But I agree with bloodworm. The 2D picture of the V3 is excellent, much sharper than the one produced by the V5.

Ok, that was optimistic.  I guess I'm not the only one who wich to sli's two v5...  That would be such a great mod !  I saw something about nvidia going sli with their fx cards.   Since they stole that from 3dfx,  maybe we could mod a v5 sli with an fx card !  This might need a big team to realize tho.

I didn't overclock my card since I want to keep it as much as I can.
How far can we overclock this dog with minimum cooling?   Is it worth it ? And are there any hardware setup we can work around to get the card more powerful ?

of course not!
in the italian forum a guy tried to link up to 4 v5 in SLI, but after 5 pages of discussion and proposals he understood that isn't realizable because a hardware link is needed and make this hardware is too complex

There was, on the other hand, a Voodoo 3 mod, alowing to link in SLI two Voodoo 3 cards in a game machine. I can't find now the webpage, but I guess that the disclosure of the procedure might allow the SLI for two Voodoo 4 cards mod because they are single chip sollutions aswell so a bridge chip is not needed. That is in theory, ofcourse; in real life - a long shot: hardware mod, new drivers, ... blah-blah ... dream on ... Still, wouldn't be nice? :)

maybe you are referring to alienware's mod
but also that was an hardware mod so it isn't realizable too

mudass,
the VSA-100 video chipset is VERY scaleable, which means that a faster main processor will do wonders for you.  quick and easy mod for you.  slap that baby into a faster motherboard while you're at it.  try overclocking the mainboard, and watch the speed increases...... a mainboard that can overclock just the micro and not the bus, would be ideal.  dump that sblive! as well, that thing is a resource HOG and slows your video down......  try one of the latest audigy cards for some added speed.  450Mhz is WAY too slow to even start showing the true speed of the V5.  alienwares little mod is what the new Nvidea cards will be emulating, but perhaps with minimal hardware additions and in the NEW PCIE buss.  alienwares stuff that was purported to work with the V3's would have worked just as well with the V5's (PCI).

ya, I'm looking on and off for a mobo combo second hand.   The greatest I found with these voodoo cards it's like having an old muscle car in the garage; Ignorant don't understand, and you're having a blast when you take it for a ride !
