AMD Video Cards / Just Ordered A Radeon 9800se

I think qrazi probably already knows about the SE's poor performance, and about softmodding and it's ups and downs, although I could be mistaken.

hehe, finally someone with a bit of fate in me... :D
i do plan to soft mod it. i ordered a Club3d 9800se, it is confirmed to have a 256mbit memory path, and this card has a change of 75% to work witouth artifacts @ 8 pixel pipelines.

i needed a new card to play LOMAC. i thought about getting a pci radeon, to complement my voodoo5. but that really wouldnt have been worth the money for me. i would hardly gain any speed, just compatebility.
i narrowed my options down to these 3:
1) 9600 XT
2) 5900 XT
3) 9800 SE

the 9600 xt would have been the way to go if i just wanted a faster card. out of the box it is the fastest in FSAA and AF. but, as i am a hardware tweaker/overclocker, i'd rather get a 5900xt (and mod/overclock to 5900 ultra or 5950 ultra) or get a 9800se and mod it to a 9800 (pro if it clocks well). since ati has bette rimage quality, and better fsaa and AF quality, i went for the 9800 SE. these three cards are all in the same price range (at least here in the netherlands).

if i get the mod to work, i made the best choice, since then i got a radeon 9800 for the price of a 9600... :)

you can enable the console from within the game. in the console type: /cg_drawfps 1 and the fps counter will show up in the upper right part of the screen

AMD Video Cards / Just Ordered A Radeon 9800se

looks like i finally took the step and moved one from my beloved voodoo5 to a radeon 9800se. i never wanted this to happen. i am almost 100% satisfied with my voodoo5. almost, because LOMAC doesnt run on a voodoo5, and i want to play LOMAC.
i wonder if i can get the softmod to work on my radeon 9800se. also wonder how high it will clock, what its 2d image quality will be like, what its FSAA will look like, and what this thing called "Anisophric Filtering" is all about... :)

anyway, i wont ditch my voodoo5. i will keep it, or put it in my little brothers pc... not sure yet which ill do....

Voodoo4/5 Discussions / Overclocking the voodoo5
27 January 2004, 08:46:24
is there someone who can clock his voodoo5 more then 10% (183mhz and above) and do some benchmarking? i can overclock my voodoo5 just a bit (180mhz on a cold day... :) ) but i have never seen an increase in performance. some people have their voodoo5 running at 190mhz, so they should have a measureable performance increase.

state what voodoo, what bios, what OS, and what OC software you use.

is this a pc game, or is an emulator used? in that case, which emulator?
hehe, it seems we can add some more software to the compatebility list... :)

true.... so the TS just has to look for some prices.... and get the cheapest of all three options, since all three options will fit good enough in his system...

i have a tv card, and a voodoo5, so would it be possible to use this connection between my tv card and my voodoo5?
the tv card i have is a terratec Cinergy 400

its a dark level... :) and FSAA would take a too great hit on a voodoo5... too bad..

Other Video Cards / XGI REVIEW, XGI = 100% cheat
21 January 2004, 08:55:16
mei: i believe the deltachrome was only tested with beta drivers, whereas in this review official XGI drivers where used.
remember that the first reviews used the very first official drivers, and didnt support AF and FSAA, and didnt work in all games either.

also, the 100% cheat phrase is used to indicate that XGI has optimized its drivers for certain games.
what the TS didnt actually say here, was that the cheating is less then with the older driver set, the speed has generally gone up.
also, if you look in tomshardware vga chart, you can see that the v5 ultra performs about half as good as the v8 duo, but sometimes gets really close. perhaps this indicates that XGI can still optimize its dual chip routines (or that XGI "SLI" sux... :P )

when buying a 9600 pro, beware to not get Lite/LE version. the 9600 pro should have a 400/600 core/mem clock frequency. but there are lots of  400/400 pros out there.

well, when memory gets insufficient power, then it will make errors, and thus start beeping...
