Title: AGP Adapter
Post by: ciacara on 21 March 2004, 18:22:15
Hello to all,
there is an adapter agp2x to agp4/8x that I can use for one v5 5500?

You supply me a link where to buy the adapter?

Thanks to all.;)

I don't think there are AGP2x -> AGP4x/8x adapters.

The best : a V5 5500 PCI

There are AGP 1x/2x adapters to PCI, but simply getting a PCI V5 5500 would be much cheaper and easier. The adapter would only really be a good idea for V5 6k owners.

Except that these adapters seem very difficult to find except Japan ... (you can find some topics in this forum about the adapter).
So for a V5 6k, a Barton on a KT333 or a Sis (745) (or some Intel) will be already in theory a nice and powerful platform.

These adapters are almost impossible to find, even in japan they are out of stock.
I placed my V5 6k in a SIS 645dx board along with a Pentium4-2800, I think that powerfull enough...

thanks to all... but cannot be modified the card from agp1/2x in agp4x?[?]
I have modified it in agp 4x having cut it as the other cards but do not work on slot to 4x, only on agp 1/2x...[V]

Pardoned my English...;)

you have cut your graphic card ??? And it works  ? I hope, you haven't damage your motherboard and your card ? There are very rare, prototype Voodoo5 5500 AGP 4x, cards, but they have also diffirent board design, you can find photos in that topic:

The Voodoo 5 5500 needs 3.3 v but Agp 4x allows only 1.5 v.
If you want to put a 3dfx Card on the last mobo's, you need a Pci or a V4 4500 Agp because THIS card supports Agp 4x, 1.5 v.
But the 4500 owns only 1 VSA 100 so it will be less good than a V5 5500.

...yes, the card is worked on a Asus p3b-f v1.4, agp 2x ;)... but it is possible that modification does not exist one hardware in order to allow to use this card on a agp 4x...[?]
I can make whichever modification on this card...;)

The link that you have written it does not work...[:(]

Hi,

I have taken a look at the possibility of doing an AGP4x to AGP 1&2x addapter. The task is pretty difficult. It will be possible to make an PCI-Express addapter to AGP slot to support V5-6000 and other old 3DFX  products. The PCI-Express to PCI bridges will be available soon. Since VSA100 does only requie PCI portion of AGP bus, it is possible to develop a riser card.

What are the difficulties with an AGP4x to AGP 1/2x adapter or with an AGP to PCI ?

Hi Hank,
this is really great news. So it seems we will be able to keep our Voodoos working a little longer, even in the next generation of mainboards...

The major problem is that the AGP 4x bus is bi-directional and requires level translation. Going from 3.3V to 1.8V is not a problem, but going back to 3.3V from 1.8 is hard. 3.3V signals are required so the Hint bridge understands the voltages properly.

1.8V? Are you referring to the "1.5" used for signaling, or is that another voltage, possibly used within the card?

Yes, 1.5V. Sorry about the brain fart.

Try to take a look here http://www.mycableshop.com/Main_Categories/Riser_Adapter_Cards.htm
Someone is able to understand if there's a agp to pci adapter?

Hank,
Isn't there a trace or two on the inner layers somewhere around the location of the extra slot that ciacara cut into his V5 AGP card?  I think the easier thing (for experiment) to do would be to rip the extra keying plastic out of the motherboards AGP slot?  Motherboards are cheap and replacable whereas V5's are a little more of a precious comodity (non renewable resource).

Ciacara,
there would be one more mod you would need to do to the V5 AGP board to get the motherboard to think that the card was a 1.5V card:  there is a jumper or resistor tied to pin one? i believe of the AGP card either to ground or VCC that tells the motherboatd that the card you have inserted is a 4x/1.5V card....  look for it on a V4 4500.  plain as day on one side of the board or the other.  the other problem is that the V5 gets some of it's power from a regulator on the V5 itself.....
