Title: Voodoo 3000 & Counter Strike
Post by: DopeJam on 25 July 2003, 12:12:28
Hi I have FPS problem with counter strike. My fps was between 5-15 and after optimizing amiga merlin 2.5se (instructions from this forum) I have about 10-25. The problem is not 25fps but 10 is too slow. I tried everything fps_max 50 & 99.
With open gl (3dfx minidriver) with d3d i got only abot 5-12fps and default opengl abot 8-15fps. I dont know were to place glidewraper from amigamerlin package. I have place it into half life /gldrv
but it doesnt help

I have 733mhz 512mb sdram
Win xp sp1
wirless internet connection
Voodoo 3 3000 pci

did you try ?
"In the "Video Modes" option in Counter-Strike's "Configuration" section you should select OpenGL and then select "Mini Driver" from the small tab at the left side of the screen. Then lower the screen resolution to 800x600"

DopeJam, lets put it this way:

I used to play Halflife/Counterstrike in my P3 450... with a voodoo3 3000
i had 128 megs of ram... 6gb of disc space. and i played it at 1024x768 16-bit max detail.

FPS where always around 30... always.

YOu must have a problem with you config.
BTW, you say you have low fps only in on-line game, or even in a little bot match?
Check you bios settings, there are sites that explain how to tweak you BIOS (without overclock) to allow the max performance of the V3...

DopeJam,
I'm sorry to hear you are having so many problems but you know the Voodoo3 wasn't meant to run on a system with WinXP on it.

Did you try loading DirectX 9.0b
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

Are you sure you have your BIOS set correctly? You have "video shadow" off? I know there are a few other things you have to have set to "off" or "disabled" too for your Voodoo card to run correctly.

Asus P4P800 i865PE | Intel 2.8 GHz P4C | 512 Mb Kingston PC3200 Dual channel DDR SRAM | 80 Gb Western Digital SE HD | Plextor 12/10/32A CD-RW | Win2000 SP3 | ATI Radeon 9500 Pro | SoundMAX 5.1 Digital Audio|

I have directx 8.1.....should I download 9.0b???
Yes, the same problem with bots.
I cant find shadowing in my bios.
I found this on a site what I have to set off:
Hidden refresh - cant find in my bios
Byte merge - cant find
VGA palette snoop - emmm cant find
DAC snoop & any Caching/Shadowing - I have only internal caching

when I disable internal caching I cant start my windows :(

What motherboard do you have?

I think you should download DX9.0b and use it.
Since DirectX is backwards compatible, it could only help.:)
I run Counter Strike on a PIII 933 w/256Mb RAM and a Voodoo3 3000 without a problem. That system is running WinME though.

i'm sceptic with DX9.0b, CS is not really new
seems to that the problem is "elsewhere"

I'm telling him to use DX9.0b because he is running WinXP, not because of CS. The problem is probably WinXP and the Voodoo drivers, not the game.

If I have this correct you are using a VIA C3 CPU.
I'm guessing there is a problem with the C3 CPU or the SiS630E chipset.

Do you have the newest BIOS update?
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS.html

Do you have the newest IDE drivers. Version 4.42 are on the site.
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/ide.html#winxp

Other than that I can't think of anything else. [?]

and why not Win98SE, probably the best OS for the game...
anyway, you will find drivers here :
http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo3.htm

well, with CS, i will begin first with "old" drivers
3dfx Voodoo3 V1.07.00 (Win98Xx)
3dfx Voodoo3 V1.03.00 (Win2k)

have now win2k sp4. With the standard win2k driver CS crashs I will try now 3dfx Voodoo3 V1.03.00 (Win2k).

shiii have the same problem with 3dfx Voodoo3 V1.03.00 and amigamerlin too I dont think this is a grafic card problem. Whole comp freezes after 10 seconds I tried with dx7 and dx8.1

PEOPLE!
WIN XP is not good for playing games! Win 98 is still the best choice.
I have celeron 433, 128 megs of ram, 3 GB HD, voodoo3 3000 (oc to 190 Mhz) win 98, dx 9.0a. In CS fps goes between 70 in large areas to 230 in houses. Use WickedGl, it helps!

Did you try to flash your voodoo card? If not, do it. It's very simple. I'm using 2.15.12 bios (modified by DRAMinit). If you are going to flash it, download the recovery tool too (in case something goes wrong, and read the instructions!!!)

Diablo works better when I enable v-sync :) Sometimes after restart it works good but sometime(after restart) it doesnt runs fine, I dont now whats the problem with my f****ng computer
Title: Voodoo 3000 & Counter Strike
Post by: Nightbird on 18 August 2003, 13:54:32
perhaps a problem with the vsync because running with vsync enabled limits your max. fps to your monitor refresh rate...
even i don't know why Diablo seems to work better (visual problem ?)

look for 3dhq voodoo3 drivers. I'm using them on windows 98, with a little overclocking (200Mhz, big k6-2 500 cooler on the v3 3000) and it's 10fps over any drivers i've tested yet. It goes around 50 fps on a k6-2 550 with 128mb on a via mvp3. I believe your problem might be comming from the cpu too, because those cpus don't have good floatingpoint unit
