My custom version of the 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 AGP

Hello everyone,
after a while of absence from the web, I am back to present two of my small MODs applied to the 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 Agp.

Having received some video cards in need of repair, I proposed to the owners the two MODs, which I had applied some time ago to some of my Voodoo 3 3000 Agp cards.

I tried to maintain the original state of the video cards by applying modifications, software (Bios) and hardware, aimed at improving the appearance, dissipation and performance of this model of video card.

The Upgrade version (3000UP) was applied to a video card that needed a capacitor recap and a general check of the video card to circumscribe some problems, which were then resolved.
After the repair, an active heatsink powered by the video card was added, with a heatsink also placed on the back side at the Avenger chip.

The installed ram was still in good condition, a 167Mhz T6 declared, and allows it to reach 198Mhz Maximum.
Stability is reached at 195Mhz.
The Default clock stored in the bios is 190Mhz.

The XTreme version (3000XT) was applied to a video card that needed a capacitor recap, the replacement of the installed ram, the replacement of the ic 74VHCT08 chip that was damaged, the repositioning of a few components because they had cold soldering, and even here a general check of the video card to circumscribe some problems, which were then resolved.

After the repair, an active heatsink powered by the video card was added, with a heatsink also placed on the rear side at the Avenger chip, as for the Upgrade version.

The ram I installed, a 200Mhz claimed T5, allows it to reach 223Mhz maximum.
Stability reaches it at 215/216Mhz. 
The Default clock stored in the bios is 210Mhz.

I'd say 223Mhz for the Avenger chip is quite an achievement.

In fact, I'd say an XTreme achievement! 8)

The true story of Upgrade 003 of the 3000XT

Hello everyone,
this card was sent to me months ago, in April 2025 to be precise, to test/repair it, but I never imagined I would receive it in this condition.
After informing the owner of the costs involved in restoring and repairing it, he decided to leave it with me.

After a lot of work, I managed to rescue it from the flames of hell and bring it back to life.
Not even flames can destroy these video cards! :ok:

After transforming it into the 3000XT Upgrade 003 version, I completed the tests and I must say that I am really satisfied with the results, because this video card is really very lucky, despite its misadventure in the flames... ;)

The test platform:
  • Asus TUSL2-C
  • Intel PIII-S Tualatin 1.4@1.7Ghz 1.45v
  • Ram 2x256Mb PC133 C2.2.2 T5
  • Voodoo 3 3000XT Agp
  • Sound Blaster Pci
  • DVD-Rom LG Ide
  • HDD Maxtor Ide
  • Windows 98SE - DirectX8.1

For heat dissipation, I added only two fans for the PIII-S Tualatin CPU and for the video card chipset.

The Voodoo 3 3000XT worked with the original heat sink, with the upgrade fan, and the passive heat sink located on the back of the video card, receiving airflow only from the rear.

I'll start with the Avenger chip clock, which reached the maximum threshold of the V.Control application, which is 230MHz.

The 2D/3D Bus Transfer Rate test, from the Final Reality benchmark, gave a result of 182.32 MB per second in 2D, while in 3D it gave a result of 180.88 MB per second.

3DMark99 was successfully run at 226 MHz, with only the first three initial tests. This was done to protect the video card, as well as to obtain valid results, even if lower than a complete test.

During testing, the score obtained at 166MHz, the base clock of the Voodoo 3 3000 AGP without upgrade, was 6984.
The score at 226Mhz is 9331, with a gain of 33.606%.

We are still talking about extreme tests, performed to obtain a maximum score, which have no reference for everyday use, also because they produce artefacts, as well as putting enormous stress on the entire video card.

With Donut Demo Glide3x, the complete absence of artefacts is achieved at 212/213Mhz, which brings the base speed of the 3000XT to 210Mhz for everyday use, with a maximum temperature, under these conditions, of 34.8 degrees on the front side and 37/38 degrees on the rear side.

At 212Mhz, with Unreal, at the maximum resolution of 1280x1024 with maximum graphics effects, Timedemo achieved an average FPS of 54 in Castle FlyBy intro.

Again at 212MHz, with Quake2, at a resolution of 800x600 with maximum graphics effects, Timedemo achieved an average FPS of 171 with Demo1.

With Quake3, at 212 MHz, at a resolution of 1280x1024/Cd16/Lightmap/High/TdMedio/Tq16/Bilinear, Timedemo achieved an average FPS of 105 with Demo1 and an average FPS of 110 with Demo2.

A funny little note that you will notice in the attached video: I kept entering the Quake2 Timedemo commands in Quake3, but I couldn't understand why the Timedemo wouldn't start, who knows why... ;)

That's all, friends who are passionate about hardware and the world of 3dfx.

Next and final step:
Break the 3DMark99 world record for Voodoo 3 3000 AGP with my Voodoo 3 3000XT 003!  ;D
