Sorry for the old thread bump.. But I've just read this and I'd also like to say how good it is to see people keeping these old cards alive.

Its great work what you guys do..

As for poo poo... People do embrace New technology. Just because people like old stuff doesn't mean they don't also play games on gf780 cards like my bros.

Having an interest in old tech whether its 3DFX or aC64 doesn't mean you're out of touch with the New stuff... It just means you have a hobby.

Personally... Im quite happy with my geforce 560ti. It may not be top notch.. But i don't see the point wasting money on a 500 pound card. I don't play much because i have a life outside of gaming... But when i do game its mostly older stuff.. Second hand games and hardware etc. But if you want to waste your time and hard earned money on an upgrade every year or so.. Then that's your choice mister poo poo.

Personally Id much rather spend my time and money on weekends away with my girl friend and tbh... I actually find i use my retro3dfx voodoo 5 build more than my i5 geforce 560ti. Modern gaming can get very samey and boring after a while. New games don't really interest me because its just a very small part of my life. So if owning a 3DFX card and only playing a little and spending hardly any money makes me a laughing stock.. Then so be it. Its only a game dude. Maybe poo poo is the one who needs a life.

Hi Gaz,

until now you got zero replies but your idea is very interesting and nice.

I'd like support a new project based on the couple < demoscene & 3dfx Voodoos cards >, with the demo's code based on GLide APIs, and so the new works could be runned by Voodoo hardware only.

I made this topic sticky; so you wait some other day, because finding people with skill and (GLide or DirectX or OpenGL) programming capability, and (free) time is not easy in general. Then, we can think to add more visibility to your request posting an announce on the site.

Bye bye

Thanks for the 'sticky' :)

lets hope something good comes from this.

I'm surprised no ones done it before tbh.

Well.. I've been in contact with a demo group I randomly stumbled on called 'UNREAL VOODOO' :)

I emailed them about the idea, and this is what they said:

QuoteHi,

That sounds like an interesting idea -- especially since the 3dfx
chips are pretty well reverse-engineered these days. I'm sorry
disappoint you about our name, though; it predates both Voodoo the GPU
and Unreal the game.

I've done some coding on 3dfx chips back in the day, although mostly
through MiniGL. I don't have any hardware any longer, though, and
these days it's also harder than it should to find time for projects
like these :/

Did you have some more specific ideas for the demo itself?

So, would anybody like to put forward some ideas for a demo? And I can pass them on?

Hi all

Post your 3dfx systems! That is the idea, since it would be nice to see what the people of 3dfxzone.it have been constructing all this time ;)

So to bring back my 3dfx life to a better spot, I have been re-building my 3dfx system since it was needed, the cables were kinda messy and now it has gotten alot neater so here we go :)

It's running now :) I did decide to keep the original flat cables , because of the small case thesewere much easier to fold and store away, them rounded ones were too stiff, so I left them aside.

It looks like this now :)

Also what I did was replace the Lockheed F19 Stealth Fighter with Gold Leader's Y-Wing Starfighter, as being Gold Leader, this does fit my system alot more  [8D]

Win2K is running top notch it boots fast, runs stable and no lockups yet at low, medium and high loads.

DXX-Rebirth runs perfect too, this time I did not need to change the reso manually from 800 c600, leav e the program boot it again and then manually to 1024 x 768, this time it just booted at 800 x 600 and I could change the reso within the game and without leaving it and go back and change it again.

This is still needed under 98SE, XP and Vista, so odd that 2000 does not have this issue.

Anyways not that it matters it has 2000 and so far everything is running fine, I'll make some pics today and post them, only the system needs is a 4 ported PCI USB card and a game drive of 500GB from Western Digital.

As you can  see the molex power connector is available and for the rest the layout and FF, System is runn;'n just fine  8)

So here's my system so far, it's content of games is low because I don't have that new HDD yet.

But so far so good!  [8D]

is there anyone in the 3DFX community who also contributes to the demoscene?

It would be cool if there was a little corner of it dedicated to making demos that ran specifically on GLIDE or at least used OPEN-GL or DIRECT X 3D but designed to push the 3DFX hardware to the limits of its features & capability's.

It's always interesting to see what people are doing with there old hardware like the commodore 64 and Spectrum and Amiga demo scenes , still writing code and showing off there capability's, and I'm always surprised to see what some of these old machines are capable of today, so wouldn't it would be cool to see a group of people making demos that show off the old 3DFX hardware to its limits and make us think "wow! is that really running on a voodoo" .

I know people have gone to a lot of effort to get newer games to run on 3DFX tech, but wouldn't it be nice to see a 3DFX 'following' in the demo scene also?

Or is there just nobody in the 3DFX community with that kind of knowledge base/programming background?

Perhaps contact could be made with some of the major demoscene contributors to see if any of them would be interested in working on voodoo based hardware?

After all, the demo's wouldn't have to be strictly voodoo only, so they could still run on other systems, but it would still be interesting to see what can be done on a voodoo with a bit of programming skill.

here are a couple of my fav demoscene's to give you an idea of what can be done with very little file size.

This one is only 179KB in size to do all this! :) wow

And this one is a tiny 4KB file! :o

A voodoo5 PCI would run:
- @33MHz in a regular PCI slot.
- @66MHz in a PCI-X slot.

where can i get the adapter?

also, is the MAC version of the pci card capable of 66mhz out of the box? or is the only difference between then the addition of a flat panel display connector?
#14
when i get my v5500 pci, will it be running at 66mhz bus or 33mhz bus? [?]

i'm sure i read somewhere that the old PCI bus in newer computers can run at 66mhz?

if, not, is there anyway to get it to work at that speed?

this is a fun game.
Anyone else want to scan a video card and have us guess what it is? :D
