Title: About 3dfx Interactive Inc.
Post by: PanoramixDruida on 19 October 2004, 14:53:38
Recently, Diamond Multimedia return from it's own death. Is there a possibility that 3dfx get back to the arena some day?.
I would like to interview Scott Sellers -a home made interview- to ask him a lot of things about 3dfx; Does anybody has an e-mail address, a phone number, something?
Wouldn't be fantastic that 3dfx come back?

1) Diamond is back from the grave in name only.

2)<insert evil laugh> With Nvidia owning the 3dfx name?

I would think slim to none chances.

@PanoramixDruida,

QuoteWouldn't be fantastic that 3dfx come back?

As gdonovan stated previously, Nvidia owns the 3dfx brand name and if they were going to try and cash in on the name/technology they would have done it very early after the 3dfx acquisition. All of Nvidia's initial statements after the acquisition were "just smoke and mirrors", Nvidia's sole intent was to completly eliminate there biggest competitor at that time.

I personally beleive that certain/all 3dfx board members sold out for large sums of money and they most likely had to sign non-competion agreements as part of the legal settlement.

As I'm positive many people have tried to arrange a formal interview with Scott Sellers after the acquisition, I would be very surprised if you succeeded.

I certainly sometimes miss the days 3dfx was king with their voodoo-cards. Alas this is the past and it will never be like then thanks to Nvidia.

I sorta felt a grudge against Nvidia eversince.
Never understood why they didn't use those then powerful names of '3dfx'and 'voodoo'. Later on I wanted to believe the Geforce FX contained superior 3dfx Rampage/Sage/Mojo/Fear technologie.
That chipset being a letdown I was glad it did not contain 3dfx power (some even roumoured 3dfx mojo cousing the failure).

Today the leading 'CPU-bakers' are Nvidia & Ati.
The Geforce 6800 seems to be the current leading card on the market,
(can you spell D O O M III?), so planning to buy a new pc by Xmas it most likely is going to be an (socket 939) Athlon 64 (clock speed to be decided yet) in combination with...the Nvidia Geforce 6800.
Will you believe I still have mixed-feelings about that inevetable aquisition?

I even have serious thoughts about reshacking (http://www.users.on.net/johnson/resourcehacker/) the 3dfx logo into the detonator driver of that card:D

Meanwhile Scott Sellers is having a good time here: http://www.azulsystems.com/company_scott.php Why don't you write him an e-mail for an interview to be posted overhere?

Maybe the 3dfx-lineage of this newsgroup will make Scott allow for that interview out of sentimental reasons?

That was always my thought as well- If I remember correct people on the board were taken care of and 3dfx folded rather fast with hardly any fuss or bother.

The whole thing screamed of people getting paid off in a big way.

Maybe a DeathStarII would destroy them or 200.000 Jedi Knights :) anyway nVidia is very powerfull indeed as I have forseen.

AmigaMerlin is a driver God really, thanks to him we got a long way with our 3Dfx/3dfx Voodoo cards.

indeedy do, hehe I just put my 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI 64MB Rev.A1 2900 in my A64 3200+ :D

I have never seen that card work so fast in my entire life!

I ran a few games no 3D mark yet.

UT GOTY Level: Deck16 Reso: 1024 x 768 x32 D3D => 160 frames per sec :D and this level with FSAA x4 41 frames per sec not bad never knew that a 5500 PCI would get that high.

UT 2003/UT II Level: Tokara Forrest reso 1024 x 768 x32 MesaFX 6.2.0.2 all detail at High => 55 frames per sec .

UT 2004 Level Corrugation Reso 1024 x 768 x 32 Mesa FX 6.2.0.2 all detail at Normal about 42 frames per sec.

Call of Duty United Offensive  Level Dawnville Reso 1024 x 768 x 32 47 frames per sec. This game is also dependant on what level you play because in the level Chateau i hit an avaridge framerate of 60 frames per sec! This test I also used Mesa FX 6.2.0.2.

The sytem setup is:

AMD Athlon64 3200+ 1MB L2 Cache
MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce3 250Gb chipset
2x 512MB PC-3200 Elixir
3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI 64MB Rev.A1 2900.

AmigaMerlin 3.1 R1.
Windows 2000 Professional + Service Pack 4

I just gotta say AmigaMerlin and friends have been do'n a very great job on AmigaMerlin 3.1 R1.

Thanx for the great support.

Friendly Regards,

Obi-Wan Kenobi.

P.S. I won't be needing any Radeon of GeForce just yet, 3dfx Must Live On!

dang boy, that Voodoo5 5500 is scoring like my Radeon 9600, that is just sick dude, a grpahics card nearly 5 years old, the nVidia equivalent (GeForce2) couldn't even do UT2K4 worth hardly anything, the GF4 might, but the fact that your getting simmilar performance to a 9600, that is just wicked...

$30 for equivlanet power to my $115 card...wowza
i'm thinking a V5 5500 is what i'm sticking in my level 3 rig (the #3 in speed) still, that is just amazing dude

Still methinks it is erg gaaf dat die ouwe voodoo het nog zo goed doet. Remeber, 3dfx used to supply a 10 years warranty, whereas the current cards go for 12-24 months warranty.

Yes I am thinking that was just a Marketing stunt, but if you look at some newer cards who will die after a couple of years after a little overclocking. I had a S3 Virge DX wich I used for 3 years and always had it overclocked from 66mhz to 80mhz!!!!!!!! I had a really bad case temp 40-45 degrees, but the card never died on me. But I think that a good quality high end card nowadays can last for a lot of years if your lucky , because there are a lot more parts that can die, the chance that you card will be 10 years and working isn't that big has with a Voodoo, because they still work after 10 years.

hehe thanx for your nice reply :) anyway the funniest thing is that my AthlonXP 2700+ system with my Vodoo5 5500 AGP scores better in 3D Mark than my AThlon64 3200+ with my Voodoo5 5500 PCI in that same program. Game srun at the same speeds on both systems. sometimes the A64 is faster and sometimes the AXP.

Well I prefer the AXP + 5500 AGP setup, it's just a little fast in Voodoo5 mode. but with a Ti4600 the A64 really kicks moor butt that the AXP :D.
