General Discussions / slow 2D performance
13 December 2011, 15:16:56
I am using SFFT 1.5 drivers w/ V5 PCI on XP. The recently released 1.9 drivers unfortunately do not work for me.

QuoteThis was probably caused by the following module: 3dfxvs.dll (3dfxvs+0x8685A)
Bugcheck code: 0x100000EA (0xFFFFFFFF8A444988, 0xFFFFFFFF8992A710, 0xFFFFFFFFBACFBCBC, 0x1)
Error: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M
file path: C:\CHILLBOX\system32\3dfxvs.dll
product: 3dfx Interactive VSA Series
company: 3dfx[Zone] www.3dfxzone.it
description: 3dfx VSA Display Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that a thread in a device driver is endlessly spinning.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: 3dfxvs.dll (3dfx VSA Display Driver, 3dfx[Zone] www.3dfxzone.it).
Google query: 3dfxvs.dll 3dfx[Zone] www.3dfxzone.it THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M
But that's not the point. The 1.5 drivers I am using work for fine for the game I play but whenever I am browsing web... the system lags quite a bit. Any idea why 2D is so slow for me?

Thanks.

I personally fancy the 9600 XT here.

+ Decent DirectX 9.0 support
+ On-chip thermal diode
+ Low power consumption
+ You can get one Zalman heatpipe equipped
+ Low price [eBay]

Runner up: Geforce4 Ti series

+ Excellent game titles legacy support
+ Very good DirectX 8.1 performance

Now I must also make it clear that I despise the whole FX line up. Geforce 6+ era cards are not legacy enough yet [:p]

Has anyone changed their standard memory chips?

If so, what are they now and what makes the BIOS does accept?

If you don't know in practice tell me in theory ;)

Appreciate all the replies.

2) Can the single chip be bigger than 8 megs?

3) Some boards come Micron equipped whereas some Toshiba. Can they be interchanged?

Thanks in advance!

Right, I know it's been discussed before but this card deserves a 2009 face lift. I recently acquired a PCI version of this oven and shortly after one of the stock fans failed on me. Although I had not noticed that until I started getting graphical artifacts / blurry screen. A swift investigation proved my initial fears i.e. the inability to find a quick fan replacement. Those are no longer made and sold I am afraid. Furthermore, the remaining fan is a bit too loud for my attic and thus I am now looking for an alternative cooling solution, that is both quiet and efficient. Obviously some of you may have already done this and may have an idea or two to share with me.

On a side note, does anybody know temperature threshold for the VSA 100 chip? I need to establish how badly I may have damaged it.

I would sincerely appreciate all the input you may have about this matter.

Got myself another card. Another time killer. I am a little puzzled by this one though. Used SFFT 1.5 drivers on both Voodoo cards, the PCI version managed to "boot" everything else I had around my rig. Now it's either SGRAM memory or just a big phat fluke. Although I re-run the test multiple times. Hmm.
