Title: Call of Duty
Post by: Koski25 on 26 December 2003, 15:53:25
I just got Call of Duty for Christmas. I'm using a Voodoo3 2000D AGP video card. When I try to load the game, a message comes up saying "Can't load OpenGL. Make sure that you have the latest driver's for your video card from the manufacturer's website." Could someone please help me out. Will the game work with my card? Thanks.

Did you try MesaFx 0.51 ?
This is the only way to run the game on a V5.

Once tried, you will get anyway an error message.
So copy and paste the full error message here.

Hum, you need to know that the game starts in 32 bits so it will be necessary to change the config. file IF this is possible...

Advice: don't sell your Voodoo 3 (legendary card) but buy at least Radeon 9000 or FX5200 for about 40 eur which is really not much.

Voodoo3 can only do 16 bit[:o)]
You really need to change some cfg file for the game to run

I've got the MesaFx 0.51 downloaded, so now what should i do to use it, just extract glide3x into c:\windows\system and extract openGL32 into the game folder?
Title: Call of Duty
Post by: Nightbird on 26 December 2003, 23:49:20
this is easy :
MesaFX 0.51x installation

Install procedure is simple and fast, it has these following steps:

Unzipping the archive named mesafx_0.51x.zip

Copying file named glide3x in Windows/System32 folder (MS Windows XP users)

Copying file named glide3x in Winnt/System32 folder (MS Windows 2000 users)

Copying file named glide3x in Windows/System folder (MS Windows 9X/ME users)

Copying file named openGL32 in game folder
------------------------------------------------

i think also that you will get an other error message...[:p]

Try the game with the mikepedo 1.1 driver which you can download from www.falconfly.de and try with them wickedgl, usual opengl or the mesafx[8D]

QuoteI'm still getting the same message

I think that now the message is "a little" different :
copy and paste, please

The Voodoo3 has probably a problem with the size of the textures in the game since the card supports only 256*256 textures.

But only D.Borca will be able to say IF this game is a NO-GO for the Voodoo 3.

And did you try to change the config. file since the game starts in 32 bits (Remember that the V3 supports only the 16 bits) ?
(remember also the "first" error : "using colorbits of 32" )

It´s why I want him to try mikepedo 1.1, it supported 512x512 textures;)
About the 32bpp, you need to change it in a config file or something similar[^]

look for a file .ini and try if you can change the 32 bits colour to 16 bit colous[:o)]

Quoteexecing default.cfg
couldn't exec language.cfg
couldn't exec config.cfg
couldn't exec autoexec.cfg

so you are looking for a file called default.cfg (I believe when the game runs it will create the other .cfg files). Look in this file for something like 32 bpp or 32 bit color, and try changing it to 16. But as Nightbird stated, this might be no-go due to the texture size limitations.

You have to look for a file with this extension: .pak or .pak3 (I don´t remember) and open them with winrar or winzip, then look for a file compatable with microsoft excel and open it with microsoft word, then, you have to modify it to run in 16bit

Try starting the game this way...
If it run, change the color depth and load it by the normal shortcut
If it dont... well, buy another card :(

So, unless dborca, the main developer of MesaFX, goes against everything he's said and implement some sort of texture compression into MesaFX, this game will be impossible to play on a V3. Or you can find some way to run the game with decompressed textures (hey, vice city can do it).

2 problems :
1) using colorbits of 32
2) video card cannot set mode 640x480 because GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE is only 256

1) you need to tweak the config. file in 16 bits
but that will not sufficiant unluckily
2) because the Voodoo 3 supports only the textures 256*256 and the game uses more textures

The only hope is here :
dborca posted - 03/15/2004 - "I can't  the facts remain just the same. It'll be darn slow. Although I guess I could give it a shot...  No promises, tho... I'm quite busy!"

If this is not possible, Call of Duty will be a no-go for the Voodoo 3  [:(]

Guys, calm down and clear your mind.[8)]
If the game can run in 16-bit mode, then it's not an S3TC issue because those textures are uncompressed (i think[:0])
And 256 texs is not a problem with mesafx, because it can resize large textures (i.e. NWN[:p])
So, the game could be played (in theory) with the right little .bat file containing the MESA_FX_MAXLOD variable. Sorry I don't have the game now and I can't try it[8)]
Title: Call of Duty
Post by: ps47 on 21 March 2004, 17:43:36
well dont think.I have the game and I know how to use mesafx, and trust me,cod wont run.
basically, you need a geforce class card to run this game.tnt2 wont run cod,and guess what is the main difference between a tnt2 and a geforce?yes its hw T&L and texture compression..
you can take a look at all supported extensions v3-v5 comparison if you want..

Download Attachment: (https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/images/icon_paperclip.gif) v5-v3_mesafx.doc (https://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/../public/uploaded/ps47/2004321174328_v5-v3_mesafx.doc)

definitely looks like texture compression..

General, what card are you trying to use? I think you need to create a new thread for your problem (this one should really be locked with a message at the end that says "Call of Duty WILL NOT RUN ON A VOODOO 3!"). I think what you need is MesaFX, so long as you're using a Voodoo 4/5 card, if you're using a Voodoo 3, well, read above.

This topic will not locked since it's no question to forbid people to write their problems with COD and even if they are always the same with a Voodoo3.
