The motherboard under my Voodoo5 6000 has failed. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a replacement since not all of those that are Voodoo5 5500 compatible seem to work with the 6000.

The Motherboard I recommend all V6K users as testers is the EPoX EP-8K3A+ the 8K5A+ had instability runs over here during every 7 hours as where the 8K3A+ had stable runs for over 36 hours and still not crashing, and the thing is I had the 8K5A2+ 3 times in a new states as where I had the 8K3A+ 2 times in new state and it never failed, I had to replace it because the capacitors of my first 8K3A+ were popped heh and now I am still using the 8K3A+ Red Alert2 seems to run dead stable on it this game is very CPU stressed the 8K5A2+ failed to run Red Alert2 within 3 minutes it crashed the system this was with all 3 8K5A2+ mobo's.
Please get yourself an EPoX 8K3A+ and you will be on the safest side ever since this is the mosty reliable Motherboard for all V6K revisions as Hank Semenec & gdonovan advised me in the old days :)

Thanks everybody! I've put bids in on a few boards so we'll see what I end up with. I'll be happy to have a backup mobo this time, as I'm concerned about ending up with a Voodoo5 6000 that I cannot use. At this point I can only hope the V56K was not damaged by the failed motherboard.

oke uhm so Must I list it defective or as a functional unit?
I have to be sure about this since I have a Defective list of V6K's a Functional list of V6K's and a list of the entire lot woith VoodooVolts as with out and a list of all the Voodoo Volts also. :)
That you have Rev.A 3700 is clear All I now need to know is it functional or not and do you have a Late Voodoo Volts a small Legacy Voodoo Volts or a large Legacy Voodoo Volts :)

How did the Mobo died ? What mobo did u used ?
The V56k should be fine.
The Epox 8K5A2+ is also a very good board, i used it with my V56K rig from about 2 years without problmes.
My Voodoo5 6000 worked until the last time this system would boot, but the motherboard and ram are bad as further testing has demonstrated. I have no way to test the 6K right now.
I do not have a Voodoo Volts, and power my card directly from two of the leads on the PSU. I had originally attached a molex connector to the power terminals on the card, but the connector turned brown from heat, and I decided that was probably not a sign of a good (low resistance) connection.
The motherboard was a Leadtek Winfast 7350KDA (I think) but since it definitely tested bad, I got rid of it. I had two of these boards and both have failed; the last one died due to bulging capacitors and a squealing toroid.
The lastest motherboard died as I tried to boot the system up for the first time in a few weeks. Recently, it had gotten so it would take a few tries to get the system to boot. Then, once at the desktop, there was some corruption in the desktop wallpapers (bad ram I think). Then the system partition got corrupted by the the bad ram, then Windows "repaired" itself such that it wouldn't boot at all. More testing allowed me to verify that the motherboard was bad (changed PSU and RAM), and also that the RAM was bad (extensive testing with Memtest on another motherboard).
I just need to wait until I can get one of these replacement motherboads that has a compatible AGP slot, since all of the ones I have remaining are apparently too new :/
Stupid arbitrary changes in technology really annoy me.

I got an Epox 8KA3, but it will not POST with either of my V5 5500 installed (so I'm not inclined to try the 6000). It does seem to work fine with another card. Any suggestions?

You made the right decision, not to try the v5 6000 yet.
Well, first of all you should be able to boot with the V5 5500.
Please try the followings tips:
I would suggest first of all a bios clear.
If you can start the board with other vga cards, then select in BIOS the AGP2x.
Save this settings, and restart the system.
When it boot, at the bottom you will see the hardware monitor, witch displays also the AGP Voltage. The value must be 3.3V for voodoo5 !
Check this out !
When 3.3V appears, then shut down the system.
Take the non 3dfx card out.
Plug the V5 5500 and start the system( don"t forget the power cord for the V5 5500 ).Restart the system. It should run.
If it"s not start, then you should look at the LED Display in the board.( FCC code )
Usualy when a VGA error occurs, the LED displays the VALUE "25", and the system hangs up.
What value did u see ?
Please consult also the Mobo manual, to see what the other error code means.

The problems were due to two issues:
This board doesn't like some of my CPUs and either fails to POST or shuts down very quickly (unless the CPU fan is at 5000rpm). Temperature does not seem to be the cause.
One of my V5 5500s is dead.
As I often have AGP problems, I resorted to testing the system with a PCI V5 5500, and once I got it running, switched to the AGP variety.
The fastest CPU I have been able to run is a 2100+, and I'm hoping to find something faster if anyone has any suggestions.
I got the 6000 to POST, so now I'm restoring the OS image to test and hopefully nothing was damaged.

Grrr... No matter what I try, I can't get the 6000 drivers to install correctly. I get a message that my display adapter is not configured properly. I'm using Windows98 and have tried a wide selection of drivers which all have the same result.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Have you tried to upgrade the bios of the board?maybe new revisions take more processors..
That 8k3A+ was a very good board in the time..
BIOS Update did not help... I've gone back to the V5 5500 for testing. I got a 5500 driver to install, and everything looks okay in 2D but as soon as I launch a 3D application (about 10-20 seconds) the system hangs. Maybe I've got to change some AGP setting in the BIOS, or perhaps this board is defective?
I've run a CPU burn-in test, memory test, and hard disk test - each of those pass with no problems.

and for example with another agp card?what happens?
it seems me more like something memory related,what tests did you ran?
try runing a few hours of prime95
because for example,my systems passes memtest but it doesn't even boot to windows..lol
Nevermind... This Epox board is definitely defective - probably due to bad/bulging capacitors. I replaced it with a ASUS board that seems to be running properly with the 5500 at least.

Okay, I got another board, this time, a SOYO KT333 Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition. After testing with the 5500 with no problems, I switched to the 6000 and everything is working quite well. I'm running an Athlon XP 2600+ in this system.
Since someone asked, here are photos of my 6000

I am quite pleased. I was worried that the motherboard failure might have damaged the card, since there was display corruption while the old board was in its last hours. I have had to dispose of several video cards in the past due to failed video ram, so I was afraid the 6000 was damaged.
Fortunately, after getting a good board (with no swollen capacitors) and running tests for several hours, there have been no video errors at all. I also have another board on order which should be compatible with the 6000, and is brand new in box, so I hope I will be able to keep this card running for a long time.
I did have a backup of my system configuration, so the 6000 is fortunately still configured as I left it. Now I just need to play some games.
