Title: D3D problem
Post by: unknownusermx on 05 November 2003, 07:39:31
Well.. maybe someone here can tellme a possible problem with my sistem...

I'm running Win XP SP1 and a V5 5500.... I'm using AmigaMerlin 3... and DirectX 9.0b... I tried too with DirectX 8.1...

All my glide and OpenGl games works relly cool!!... but my D3D games doesn't work.. Maybe this weekend I back to win98 se.... but.. maybe this forum can be my last hope.. because here r all the developers of the drivers...

When I ran a D3D game.. my pc crash... some horizontal lines shows.. and my pc restar after some minutes.... the message that I get when my pc starts again is that the 3dfxvs.dll file cause the problem...

I tried 3 different drivers... first 3dhq 1.09 beta 4 drivers for xp (this was the only 3dhq drivers that works with glide and opengl)... after this drivers.. I install AM2.5 for XP my problem continues... and I wait for AM3... when this last drivers was release I install it... I clean my registry.. clen my system of 3dfx files.... god... I was working on this cleaning aroun 1 hour.. because I search an eliminate all the drivers an registry keys...

But nothing works...  the last time that I reinstall the drivers I saw that win xp change my 3dfxvs.dll and 3dfxvsm files for other differents that comes with AM package... anyway.. I overwrite this drivers in safe mode.. and restart.... I think that this could be my problem.. but don't... I still with problems... I can't run any D3D application...

some idea???.... [:(].. I post this problem in the VoodooFiles forum.. and the tip was that I format my pc.. and reinstall all again... but.. hehe... I think that maybe other solution is possible.... [^]

Thnx for all....

can you run the direct3d test in directx diagnosis? (start --> run --> "dxdiag", then to the display tab and press the "test direct3d" button).

all three drivers you tried work for me, under win2k. and they work for most people under winxp too.

perhaps you should do try to uninstall your drivers, remove all files with 3dfx in it, al files with glide in it, and remove all registery keys with 3dfx in it.

I can't do the D3D Test, I saw the same lines

About uninstall drivers, delete files, clean registry, etc.. etc.. etc.... I tried it millions of times and doesn't works... every time that I reinstall drivers I do that... I login in safe mode... delet all the files, clean registry.. and after reboot I install the 3rdparty drivers.... and I still with problems...

Hi all :)

unknownusermx, welcome.

Try these following:

- Remove Via chip-set drivers and Voodoo driver and reboot the system.

- Download VIA Hyperion 4.49 package for motherboard chip-set optimal configuration (you can grab it here http://www.hwsetup.it/ clicking on mainboard link at left of page and then on VIA link)

- Update the bios of your motherboard with the latest no beta revision.

- Now please go in system bios and turn on disable all components that you do not use like usb or com or lpt ports.

- Verify that AGP slot do not share IRQ with other devices.

- Now install Via Hyperion and reboot.

- Now re-install DirectX9b reboot.

- Finally install AM 3.0 XP following the steps as in the readme file.

Let us know...

Bye bye

Try the standard WindowsXP drivers for the Voodoo 5.
They might lack in performance but you can be sure they work correct under WindowsXP.
If you still have problems then I think you've got a hardware problem.

rename the driver.cab file in the i386 folder and reboot, then reinstall yer drivers.  this keeps winblows from walking all over yer newer drivers.

EDIT: Stupid questions that I can't remeber if were answered at VF: do you have the BIOS set up correctly, with fast writes off and agp 1x/2x?

unknownusermx - go into your 3dfx-AA and change the direct3d FSAA to 'single chip only' then run your Direct 3d benches/games - let us know what happens

ah, I never even though of that, nor did anyone else. Isn't there a way to try each individual chip in one driver version? i think I remember a "Second Chip Only" in some driver version I used, but it isn't AM 2.9.

You have been having exactly the same problem as me my friend!
Windows XP Professional - Clean Install - DX9.0b loaded - AmigaMerlin installed exactly as per instructions - Glide runs great - OpenGL runs great - Direct3D hangs the machine.

Other forums are posting simialr problems with this driver - I use an Intel Mobo so not VIA chipset but of course I believe I may well switch back to Windows 2000 and just use the 3dfx driver as the alternative of "Use Koolsmokey's Glide, FreezeMonkeys OpenGL and Megadeaths D3D drivers except for Blah Game where you will need to run Cyberpunks wrapper or Doh Game where you will need to run x-3d's Glide mega zoom driver...." is just too much of a pain.....

It's freaky.... and... I still without understand what's happening..

When I install XP the first time (when this OS was released) I used Voodoo Alpha drivers for XP and D3D works really good... after i used 3dfxunderground/3dhq drivers... and D3D works only for some days...

anyway... the last time that I made a clean install from WinXP my first 3drparty drivers was AmigaMerlin 3.0... I guess that d3d has to work good, but isn't... and I formated my pc again and install win98se... I had the hope that d3d works good but isn't!!!... I use the original 3dfx drivers... and tried too with am2.9.... and d3d still without work...

when I install omegadrivers 1.02 d3d works without problems... and... I was confused... any way.. I was looking for some omegadrivers for XP but doesn´t exist, only for 2k... I was wondering reinstall XP, because is more friendly for the other users in my home and doesn't hang up too many times like win98...

The point is that d3d works on XP only when I use Single Chip on the D3D FSAA setting... in other way doesn't work.... some people in this forum and in VF forum said to me that my V5 had a VSA chip damage... ok... it's possible... but why with omega drivers I can use FSAA 2x and 4x without problems??... maybe this drivers have a kind of "special" setting.. or maybe could be a setting in my D3D part... I don't know....

If somebody can explain to me why this happend, I'll appreciate it...

Ywep I foubd ou that Single Chip mode in D3D only works fine - this actually isnt single chip though so I think the problem is in the drivers for Fastest - I on't think it actaully is running single chip as 3dmark2001 score for me is over 2000 - I think this score is ballpark for V5 - if it was only running single chip wold expect the score to be lower.

Solution? - Set D3D in tools to Single Chip.

Amiga - If you are reading this any thoughts?

Hola [:p]

Ok... I install Win XP again and install AM 3.0... When I put the D3D FSAA Setting to Faster Performance (something like that... in this moment I'm not on my PC)and I do any test my screen looks up and show a lot of lines...and is needed restar the PC [:(!] but If I change to 2x or 4x  FSAA I can see the image (Direct X Cube or the animation in Wizmark), but when the test is finished my PC froze and a few seconds after (30 to 50) I get a error message....[V]

any way... I want to know why with omega drivers under win 98 D3D works good, even in 4x mode....[B)]

what 3dfx tools are you running to set up 2x and 4x?  It sounds like you're getting all of your 3dfx toolsets mixed up and that is the real problem....
Title: D3D problem

Bloodworm,

I don't remember the Tools ver., but they come with the full package of AM 3.0 XP...[}:)]

What u mean when u say mixed toolset??... If I undestand well, ur saying that maybe all my other tools version is mixed with this new?, or is other thing???...

I was thinking something about Omegadrivers, when I was using this in Win 98SE and I star a D3D game I get my screen with a blue color, I see all good but with more blue in the colors. So, it´s possible that Omega made this drivers using a kind of wrapper from D3D to Glide/opengl, because this color I was only geting in Glide/OpenGl games... This could be possible??... any developer that could explain it... thnx...[B)]

try an agP aperture size of 64Mb or greater (even though it doesn't do anything for the V5).  I had problems with some things when I tried to set mine lower than 64Mb.  I think this is a directx problem.
