Title: Voodoo5 screen resolution
Post by: szd551 on 02 January 2007, 18:48:57
Hello all!
I'm using a VOODOO5 5500AGP driving a Samsung synchmaster 203B (analog mode).
Now this presents a problem: this TFT uses 1400x1050 but using the default XP-drivers (or the amigamerlin ones)I can't choose this...

How to achieve this? If somebody could lead me to the solution I would be very grateful!
Regards,
SZD551

You have to add the resolution in 3dfxvs2k.inf ([3dfxvs_SoftwareDeviceSettings]) and to reinstall the driver...

Thanks for the reply,
I tried adding the 1400x1050@60Hz to the .inf file by using copy/paste in notepad and then installed this driver.

However nothing shows up in the display properties box (the resolution still is not listed) I have to admit, I just copied one of the lines in the .inf file and changed it to 1400x1050 without changing the info behind it as I have no clue what this is.. [B)]

Maybe someone can point me a little more into the right direction?

Thanks for your patience!

HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\60Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\60Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

well not entirely

heh it's not that simple I'm afraid (http://www.falconfly-central.de/forum/YaBBImages/undecided.gif)

I did exactly what he reported but then you get this problem:
the PC want's the 3dfxvsm system file as well and that one has to be changed as well, which is like learning an Alien language to me, it's easier said than done I guess (http://www.falconfly-central.de/forum/YaBBImages/undecided.gif)

The Reso's I need are 16:10 reso's not 16:9 reso's

the following reso's which I have added are the following:

HKR,"TIMINGS\1280,800\60Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1280,800\60Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1280,800\70Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1280,800\70Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1280,800\75Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1280,800\75Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRA

HKR,"TIMINGS\1440,900\60Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1440,900\60Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1440,900\70Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1440,900\70Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1440,900\75Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1440,900\75Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

saved the 3dfxvs.ini file but sad to say no changes after reinstalling the driver.
Though I did add the 16:9 reso 1400 x 1050 as well just to see if that will work.

HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\60Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\60Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\70Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\70Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\75Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1400,1050\75Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

But that was a no go too.

Well like ps47 said, could you link your 3dfxvs/ini file somewhere so others and myself could make use of it?

It would be great if you could do that for us. [8)]

I would gladly post "my" .inf file!

The uploading does not allow .inf files so I just added .jpg, you will have to delete this part...

I just copied the mentioned lines into the files provided as "GURU3D", then I just installed this from the control panel. Somehow this seems different from adjusting with rightclick on the desktop and adjusting adapter settings.

Hope this works, otherwise just let me know so I can lok for another solution

Hi all,
did you manage to get things working? Out of curiosity I tried the same trick on the sfft43 driver and then installed it...

Well like they say: curiosity killed the cat! Luckily roll back set everything back to as it was. Adding the mentioned lines to the inf file  does not add them to the resolution you can choose through the display properties menu. I have no idea what causes this.

So to recap: using the GURU3D drivers and adding the resolutions as mentioned in the previous post works but doing the same on other drivers doesn't.

If someone finds the cause : please share...

Maybe the real whizards who invest their time improving the drivers for our Voodoos can help?

Regards to all,

I'd like to run 1680x1050 in my Voodoo5 ... but it doesn't work either. It would be great if SFFT could integrate these "new" resolutions into newer drivers. [:)}

can´t you add this resolution in powerstrip custom settings ?

I've tried this before, but it did not work. Now I was successful – Powerstrip 3.73 and SFFT Alpha 44 work together. :)

It's no big thing. Just install Powerstrip and open "Display profiles". On the right side you have to klick ond "Advanced timing options", then on "Custom resolutions". I chose 1680x1050, made a reboot and could set the resolution. :)

I did encounter the same problem, fortunately the solution was fairly simple.

I am running Win98 on a Voodoo 5500 PCI equipped PC connected to a Samsung 205B monitor which has a native resolution of 1680x1050 (20").

All it took was to edit the 3dfxvs.inf file included in the installation set by adding the following lines:

--->8---cut--- (under ; Modes)

HKR,"MODES\32\1680,1050"

--->8---cut---

and

--->8---cut--- (somewhere between the other similar lines)

HKR,"TIMINGS\1680,1050\60Hz",,,"GTF"
HKR,"TIMINGS\1680,1050\60Hz",Supported,,"BPP+8+16+32,DDRAW"

--->8---cut---

And then reinstalling the driver.

This worked with
- the last official 3dfx driver
- AmigaMerlin 2.9
- Raziel's Evolution Driver 1.01.16
(all for Win98 of course; no idea if this works with Win2000/XP)

It works and is a serious advantage over running the screen at any other interpolated resolution (the Samsung 205B does not offer a 1:1 mode).

There is however a small disadvantage: video overlays no longer work in the 1680x1050 resolution (every other res is unaffected), all video playback is crude and blocky. I tried three different video players (Classic Media Player, BSPlayer, Windows Media Player), three different V5500 drivers (see above), reinstalled DirectX 9, tried numerous 3dfxvs.inf changes (whatever I thought may help), applied a weird Netmeeting trick (see http://www.sebbi.de/archives/2005/01/07/overlay-directdraw-not-working-easy-fix/) and even more. To no avail.

Dxdiag.exe does not report any problems and all DirectDraw, as well as Direct3D tests run without a glitch.

Does anyone know any possible solution? (Apart from a complete Windows reinstall which probably wouldn't help anyway. It has to do with the resolution and the drivers.)

uhh,I dont really have a solution for the overlay, but could you get a shot of your screen when running in the 1680x1050 res? I would like to see if you got this resolution running without distortion (see second shot): http://forum.3dfx.cz/viewtopic.php?t=1666&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20#26560

There is no distortion or interpolation, everything is very clear and crisp (as expected).
