The engine IS different... In Win9x using the last Evos, the game starts ok, shows the intro screens, the intro movie, and the menu.
After that, everyting can be configurated, and I can start a race, but I can't see the cars... Something like a black layer is covering the image, and only the radars and speed/turbo meters are visible...

Same for me under Millenium.
I wait nothing under Win2k using the last beta core also.
Hum, i'm thinking that the game is using a DirX9(c) feature not supported by the driver so "black screen".

I tried 3DAnalyzer 2.34 (pixel shaders) but i get "only" an error in the kernell32.

I've tried this on my R9100 also, close some of the effects(like particle system, light glow/trail, etc)... switching all things off and set everything to minimum will solve the problem somehow i think..

Unluckily, this is not sufficiant.
The "problem" is "elsewhere".

Yeah, for me, it only works with directx7 video mode set. Underground 1 still no go on winxp though. Funny thing, HUD is there, you can drive, hear sounds, just CAN'T SEE THE DAMN GAME! I've even tried full graphics, but nothing, don't know what else to do...

I think there shouldn't be a problem for V5 to run it (on hardware level)
some people claimed that a Radeon 7000 can run it, i can run it with my sister's SiS 661FX (= SiS 315 with AGP8X), with occasion framerate drop (shared 64MB memory)

maybe the size of texture memory is a problem..
