Title: Voodoo5 6000 + SFFT: colorful square on the screen
Post by: Raff3DC on 20 October 2006, 21:11:18
Aye!

I've opened this topic to explain a problem with my "goddess", the Voodoo5 6000. Since I own her, many hours of testing have passed. And there is one problem that occurred all the time: a colored square "in front" of the rendered 3D scene. Its size is maybe 30x30 pixels and it appears mostly in quite disturbing positions in the middle of the screen, but sometimes a little sideways, too. In some cases it blinks or changes colors ...

After some testing I can say that the problem only appears in Direct3D-based titles, so I think it's an SFFT issue. I've tested SFFT's from Alpha 39 to 41 with my 6k, and it always showed up. But not in all games and not all the time ... that's what makes it a little weird.

Once visible, it's hard to make it disappear. Sometimes it helped to set 4x/8x AA. So maybe it's really a SLI-problem? But I also have to say that there are days when nothing helps ... like today. This artefact sucks and I hope that we can solve the problem. :) As far as I know, I'm not the only one with this problem.

Testing with Windows 98 and/or other drivers will follow!

Greetings from Germany,
Raff

Yeah, the same square ( is pink to me )occurs to me also, for example in 3dMark2001, in the first 2 test. The square is located in the right middle conner. It's not allways there, only with the SFFT. With the Amigamerlin driver is ok.
Until now this test is the only place where the square apperas.
I guess that is a driver issue.

Radu.

If you own Max Payne 2, Gothic or TrackMania Sunrise, please try it too. :) The square always shows up there on my rig.

I'll start testing with other drivers now. Maybe it's a bug that was introduced shortly before Alpha 39.

By the way: I have another suspicion that came quite spontaneously. Maybe it's a mouse cursor bug? I remember cases where I could move the square ...

Raff

hm...i must search them..they are here somewhere.
but i tryed again the benchmark using different drivers, and discovered that with the SFFT 36 the pink square is not there anymore...
with the SFFT 39 and 41 the square is present..so my conclusion is that it myght be a driver issue.
The odd thing is that only on v5 6000 appears this problem..on my v5 5500 is no problem...it must be related to the 4 way sli

Exactly! Nice to know that there are others out there that have this error.
I've tested Alpha 37 today ... and it runs fine! So this bug may be introduced in Alpha 38 or 39.

it's a know problem, look at this

in short it's a SFFT drivers problem due to SLI issue; this square doesn't appear with all voodoo5 6000 and it can be diminished setting scan line height=2

Well, Italian is one of many languages that I haven't ever tried. ;) So this problem is that old? Wow – time to eliminate it. :D But ... why do SFFT's < 39 help then?

Holly crap!!! Is that another score for Romania or what? So M14Radu is another proud owner of a Voodoo5 6000 in this poor country? It must be at least the 3rd recorded Romanian owner, after Daniel Borca (dBorca) and Alpar Pollnitz (Mikulaish)! ...and hopefully they will not be the only and the last ones...
Radu, all my congratulations for you! I had no ideea that you were housing such a fabulous item too! Sice when did you get it?

I've discovered that the square appears with Alpha 37 too! But only resolutions above 1024x768 are affected. Gothic I for example shows a blue square when running in 1280x1024x16. A solution would boost the card too, I assume.

There is a solution for it, beside changeing the driver. I managed to get rid of the square, but don't remember how. If i do, i'll post the solution.

Yeah, would be nice! :)
Actually it's not possible to set 1600x1200 in any application without baaad fps.

I used to play Counter Strike in 1600x1200 flawlessly.

Sorry, I meant in Direct3D. In Glide and OpenGL it runs fine. But that's not SFFT's area. ;)

With SFFT Alpha 37 I could even set 2048x1536x32 in 3DMark2000 ... but don't talk about fps ...
