yep, 2X is all the V5 can handle anyways...... 3.3V goodness.

V2 is ONLY a primary 3d acelerator.  no 2d capabilities at all.
#18
definately.  codecs are made for more high end stuff, and for compression routines that are done inside the video card instead of the processor.  where are you seeing the biggest performance hit?  mpegs, avi's or wmv's?
#19
get rid of norton, it sucks up too much memory.....  and process time.  how much memory do you have?

only a PIII would give him an extra instruction set for SOME games to use..... speed and ram helps, but for the games he will be playing, a 200MMX at 250Mhz will be sweet.

86 the SBlive and go with something else (anything else).  move the voodoo card to a different PCI slot, not all slots are the same.  make sure the v3 is getting an IRQ via the BIOS.  there is a PCI latency setting on some older MOBOs that maybe you have yours set incorectly?  I think the PCCHIPS is your main problem.  get ahold of an Intel made motherboard (BX2 series) on ebay and 86 the whole motherboard.  you have a slot 1 processor? or which processor do you have?  turn OFF usb if you don't need it!

just because SLI never made it to the VSA100, that doesn't mean that the engineers weren't thinking ahead when they layed out the prototype boards...... SLI is already on the V5 via the two VSA100's, so the extra VGA connector may have been a remnant of some past board or future thoughts by the engineers.  Maybe it was the only connector thay had lying around to test the digital interface at the time.  Hank could clarify this point.

Yes, nice to hear from you again DBORCA.....  I've missed those heady days when NWN didn't work until you started to tweak your Mesafx and suddenly I could play NWN with my V5!

how much RAM do ya have?  any other cards installed (ie usb 2.0, sound etc.).
#25
hmmmmmm.... that must have been for the pass through cable for SLI?

the coils are still there, they just have a different package style.  and the 4.7 doesn't stand for "volts" but micro or milli HENRYS.  they're inductors, not capacitors.  the transistor looking things next to the VSAs ARE capacitors, just in a different package style (again)....

You may NOT need to "dual boot" dos6.22 and win98se, because 98 has a "boot to dos" mode built in.  98 is esentially DOS 7.0? i believe and I never had a problem with any of my dos games not working when I booted to dos mode from 98se.  Yes, I think the 3dfx card will need to be PRIMARY for the dos games to even work at all.  you should be OK with the 6800 playing DX and openGL games, and if you have to, you can disable the V5 in windows with a click of the mouse, making the 6800 the primary on the fly.  SOME dos games may not like the faster CPU, and make sure to set all your IRQ's manually in the BIOS for DOS too.....

Cool, nice to hear that my long distance tech savvy helped out! [8D]

Has anyone tried it with a PCI main video card?  maybe the AGP video in the newer boards is the culprit.

sounds like a PCI timing issue.  does the V2 cards use an IRQ? optionally maybe?
