Title: Voodoo 5500 and Steam
Post by: technik733 on 19 August 2008, 03:24:30
Is there some way to get the Steam version of the original Half-Life to run on a Voodoo 5500? I can get it to open with the 3dfx Community drivers (1.08.04) but I can't change any video settings, and it's very slow.

Also, I'd like to know if there's a driver that supports DirectX 8, because I'm trying to get TF2 to run on my Voodoo. XD

should work ok with the latest amigamerlin drivers (https://www.3dfxzone.it/news/reader.php?objid=1176),or you can try the latest SFFT driver (https://www.3dfxzone.it/news/reader.php?objid=7967) if you dont mind a bit of experimenting..

I tried it with both and all it does is flash the menu background, attempt to go fullscreen, and then crash with no error message. [xx(]

Also, with the source 2007 update that's part of TF2, you get an error that says you need pixel shader version 1.1 to run it. I've tried using 3dAnalyze, but it seems that steam doesn't like it very much. It makes all of my games "unavailable". And I can't force TF2 to run at DirectX 7; it does that same thing that Half-Life does when I try that. No, actually it just crashes out after the "Preparing to Launch Team Fortress 2" window disappears when I do that.

I have made a small cfg file that should launch the game with all settings at minimum (it goes to the cfg folder).here (rightclick and save as): http://helppage.3dfx.sk/autoexec.cfg

try that, plus you can try runnig the game in a window (adding "screenwindowed 1" to that cfg file should do the trick)..if that wont work, you are probably out of luck.

Erm... Where is this cfg folder? Under my user folder in steamapps, or what? You are aware that I'm talking about the steam version that has all the .gcf files that you're not allowed to alter (and still run them with the real steam client), right?

nope.this as a plain autoexec config file, users are allowed to create those.basically,it runs the game with some commands already enabled,so you dont have to type them in additionaly..try googling a bit.

Aah, I found it. Yeah it was under my profile in steamapps, but hidden away since it's a goldsrc game. I'll try it out in a little bit.

Huh... it worked for a little while when I put -dxlevel 70 on the launch options, but when I tried to switch it to OpenGL it got stuck in some kind of loop and now I can't get it to work even with -dxlevel 70. The config file isn't working. =/

I actually broke the installation of windows on that machine by downloading mass effect with a virus. I'll be pulling out the pinmod and reinstalling this weekend probably, and I'll try running Half-Life then.
