Title: Unreal Tournament : fps record breaking
Post by: TelemachusRhade on 14 December 2005, 23:39:57
Hello

Im looking now to get totaly maximum out of my UT (its the one from 1999 - G.O.T.Y edition to be exact [8D])

Im not very satisfied with my framerate, I know that I can achieve better marks there since i own Voodoo card because Voodoo (V3 2000APG to be exact [8D]) rule on UT/Unreal1 series :D

Ive found drivers that allow me to override some gamma limitations, so now I`m looking for tips/driver (glide) updates focused on UT performance

If anyone here can give me a hand on this... please help... Thankyou.

get ahold of a V3 3000 or a V3 3500 to maximize the "V3" potentials.......  faster ram and clock speeds.  more RAM in your system will help.  faster processor/RAM FSB will do WONDERS for your framerates.  A V5 would be the best, but a V4 would do too.  these things scale like CRAZY with faster processors anf FSB's.  remove any unneccesary things like modems and floppy drives and serial ports and parrallel ports from your system either physically or through the control panel click the red X for the devices you don't need.

Telemachus,
as far as I remember, the best you can do is to use koolsmoky's glide2x.dll driver:D

hehehe this is a closed subject actualy, even if I`d bought V4/5 it wouldn`t be fully used as somebody said... So thats the main reason why I stopped investing more money in my old pc and I`m focused on sqeezing ALL the juices from what I have ;) (im gonna get a new one in a future anyways)but the old one is very good for old games wich I love (oh sorry for the offtopic)

Thankyou agrelaphon... My friend provided me with diferent glides and I wasn`t sure wich one was the best for UT... Allthough from my tests there wasn`t big diferences while I was testing those glides... (even koolsmokey's :/) maybe I missed something ?

No, you didn't. Don't expect huge differences. It's only that with koolsmoky's glide2x (2.61.0.2604), peak fps @ UT (not average)went up

I see... Looks like I got another problem, check out this screen, it were made in ut by F9 key... and they look like sh!t with this darn bugs... but I dont have them in game, only on screens... I was using KOOLSMOKEY's glide and now I switched to NuAngel drivers for Voodoo 5 default GL and im having nice FPS in HIGH deatail(!!!) but this darn thing still haunts me
(http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6485/darnscreenbugssh1t7ne.th.jpg) (http://img529.imageshack.us/my.php?image=darnscreenbugssh1t7ne.jpg)
And yes... Im using Voodoo 5/6 drivers on Voodoo3 2000 AGP ;) Acording to this site http://ice.prohosting.com/k0bra/benchmarks.html those drivers kick ass wich I can confirm too, there is detailed benchmark in this link you may wanna chek it out too if dont belive me... But its soooo damn dark with any driver or koolsmokeys glide... I mean I have a set of drivers... two actualy wich can make this problem go away :D they give me possibility (actualy one, second [mikepedo] is brightened but not adjustable) to adjust gamma and make it brighten while in other drivers there is no such thing... Im curious where I can find those values that make gamma brighter in glide, because I cant do it by 3dfx Tools or other similar util... And this bug thing in screen

PLEASE HELP

Hmm...
The gamma probably depends on the driver , not the glide dll

That benchmark page is way too OLD, and these drivers use the same glide dlls, more or less (the latest 3dfx dlls). One or two olny use the 761 icd...[:p]

If you want my opinion, don't bother with 3rd party drivers + win98/me. Go to falconfly's page and download the driver that suits you.
(31 Jan 2001  V1.07.00b would be fine)

Yes my friend exacly, the gamma depends on the driver, the question worth 10 milion dolars is: where are the settings responsible for gamma stored in ? I`d like to make my UT brighter while using diferent drivers that dont have gamma regulation (and dont tell me about 3dfx tools or other gamma regulation thingy because its not woking =( - I tried them all, variousity of programs but no effect [argh] ) [:P]

It wasn`t allways like that with those screenies :/ It was working fine, I decided to try out koolsmokey's glide as you advised me to take a closer look on the fps, but It gaved me the nasty effect on the screens and while I returned to the previous default NuAngels glide I had the same effect (doh [;(]) I mean... The screenshot function is not that important especialy if the glide gives you kickass framerate, but I dont like having something that also have it`s defects [:/]

I`ve found another interesting thing... x3dfx drivers 1.08.00b gaved me hell of a boost in ut while i turned EVERYTHING to maximum quality, including anti aliasing xD... Also heard of a rumour that the frame mesure system in UT is bugged and I can get a really great frame rates, dont know if its true about the bugged framerate mesuring system :D but this is UT game, its made to kick ass on 3dfx cards, thats why I wanna make it kick ass even more [:P] Even now, framerate is great (dunno how I did it) but still there is allways a question: Can the framerate get better ?

About the drivers... hehehe now I`m a bit lost (again [:(])... But I`m gonna try those that you advised me... How do you think... Will the 31 Jan 2001 V1.07.00b driver + koolsmkey's glide kick ass  and wont make the damn bug in the screenies ?

Oh my god... Still the same, even when I installed those drivers you advised... >_< Could you direct me in more detailed way how to get rid of this screenshot bug problem ?

Here are some more news about the progress I am making in my tests:

Tried the reference drivers... And when I saw the framerate, I went mad :D In the act of desperace... I looked once again @ Falconfly driver page to seek for something special (even though I looked ther over a bilion times)And when I saw the comment ther on AmigaMerlins 2.0 driver "Additional tweaks and Glide Updated" I thought : Hmmm never tried this thing, heck lets give it a try then... (I know its old but note... 1.03.00 drivers i.e are a LOT older [:d] but they have a special function [possibility tu run GTA3 on a V3 and VC]) I turned everything on high, and acording to the page when I found the note about NUAngel on Voodoo3 I collected some info about the functions that I wasnt sure about, additionaly I overcloaked my Voodoo from 143MHz to 163MHz (yeah I`m crazy allright especialy with the default cooling system :D) Results kinda supprised me, Ive turned DM-Codex for beniching, I played it (ah forgot to mention that my UT... I got rid of unnecessary sh1t like dynamic lightning and other functions that arent so noticeble but take fps's) and when finished results came in at the beggining of a new map:
(http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/2251/85fps4pl.th.jpg) (http://img164.imageshack.us/my.php?image=85fps4pl.jpg)
As you see the installation of new drivers didn`t solved the screenshot bug, but notice that I`m having score of 85fps, when I recalled what my friend said that he have the same score on a better comp than me I started to laugh... During the game I checked current framerate (not average) in diferent actions, I`ve faced a guy with a minigun, generaly speaking I had there lot of frames lost but now it wasnt that tragic it felled to 4X fps usualy there was something about 3X(31-33)fps, when I looked at the wall I got nice framerate of 16X(165-190)-21X(216-219), diring the action and after I smashed some bots (game was running with 4 bots) I didnt had a major fps loss... The only thing left is the screenshot glitch...

If you know about some other drivers that have positive effect on Unreal Tournament please let me know, I would be happy to test more stuff and find out that they are better :D

Telemachus, give some give give (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/agrelaphon/weed.gif)

And you could try taking your screenshots with HypersnapDX, that should get rid of the problem + get 3D filtered screenshots

huh? What`s that all about ?

Tried... Guess what ? The same thing... [:(]

Indeed this is weird... Now I`m in a little mess again x( You said that that bench from the site I gaved link to is old... True, but those v4/5 drivers seem to work nice with v3 and UT... I mean, I`m getting nice framerate even in high detail settings x] I`m kinda getting the feeling that the driver I tested wich seemed to be average is getting greater scores every time i format my hdd ;| There is a lot of drivers, this variousity can make person insane :D You said reference driver should be fine, but it wasnt ;| Im gonna format my hdd again and I wonder wich drives to choose now... I got drivers for GTA, Colin Mcrae Rally 2 but no luck on the UT selection x( although NuAngels seems to be good candidate (I mean it`s the only cadidate for now)

If I remember correctly, NuAngel's drivers have the core files of the 1.07.00b

[xx(] UT was made with V3 in mind. It should be run in all its graphics to max with no problem[8D]

There is no problem with the look of those effects when I turn all on max ;) No no ... Its about performance not look... Some of this things cause nasty fps drops... :/
QuoteIf I remember correctly, NuAngel's drivers have the core files of the 1.07.00b

And I seriously doubt that, the NUAngel can`t have the same core as a drivers you have mentioned, I tested them both and I see a MAJOR diferance in fps AND options in 3dfx tools, it cannot be the same really, I kinda doubt that they even have something in common ^^ oh! wait, wait! There is one thing that those two sets have in common... Actually all (allmost all) drivers have this in common - its the well know gamma bug in glide wich I mentioned few times

Speaking of OpenGL... As a matter of fact I cant run UT in OpenGL without a major graphic defects and anomalies... I know that UT's default OpenGL is a piece of sh1t... I am talking about LokiOGL, no matter wich library I instal (btw I dont have much choice... I have WickedGL only) the open gl looks like sh1t :/ Dunno why...
Title: Unreal Tournament : fps record breaking
Post by: TelemachusRhade on 24 December 2005, 21:46:28
and the latest "Enhanced Open GL reneder for UT" called UTGLR is a piece of sh1t too IMO, its optimized for people with newer gear...
