hello. i got a voodoo card from a friend and i would like to know if i can use it on my GigaByte GA-7VKMP motherboard. on the card there is a 3dfx logo. "Voodoo V", "32M","CV350" and "Ver1.0" printed on it. one fan. blue display port and what seems to be a tv out port. made in Taiwan.
how do i know if its an AGP? how do i know the AGP type it has, and should i even bother with my S3 ProSavageDDR card?

Usually CV350 is a PowerColor EvilKing 4. Look here and scroll down http://www.3dfx.cz/voodoo4.htm

I own also this Voodoo 4 (32 mo). Even if this Voodoo 4 is keyed like an Agp 4x (1.5 v), in fact this is an Agp 2x (3.3v) so you will need to be careful with some mobos. I read the manual about your GigaByte GA-7VKMP and it seems that the slot Agp is Universal (1X/2X/4X). Is it better then the S3 ProSavageDDR ? i don't know really the S3 ProSavage (don't own this card) but i can say that with a Voodoo (4), you will access to the Glide, MesaFx and an excellent driver under Win2k/XP.

well, the manual says "Universal AGP slot (1X/2X/4X) device support" but the product web page says AGP "4X slot". i hope its the same. now, if its Universal it should work with 1.5v and old 3.3v, right? so on the paper, everything should work, right?

Well, the card seems to be keyed for AGP4x, that means it will mechanically fit into the most modern AGP boards, even into those AGP4x/8x only boards. Fact is, although the card seems to be a AGP4x card, it actually is a AGP2x card, which means it needs 3.3V. Plug this card into a modern mainboard with no overvoltage protection, you risk to burn card AND mainboard. Thats why you have to be carefull... Note : If you WANT to use a Voodoo4 AGP in you mainboard, get yourself a original 3dfx V4-AGP of ebay for a few bucks, this one is guaranteed to work with 1.5V, I tested it myself in my Asus P4C800E-dlx mainboard. |

| that's a PowerColor EvilKing 4. it IS a 4x 1.5V OR a 2x 3.3V card, it can do both. the extra slot says it all. there were only a handfull of VERY old cards (NOT 3dfx but diamond viper) that were keyed this way, but had physical jumpers on the board to set to make them 1.5V 4x to not blow a motherboard. the only thing you REALLY need to look for is the extra slot, and the pressence of a zero Ohm "jumper" from pin 2 side "A" to ground determines the bus voltage type the motherboard will be asked to supply. if the jumper is present, then the motherboard will supply 1.5V. if not, then it will supply 3.3V and will set the bus speed accordingly (usually)..... |
