Greetings,

I am trying to decide what to put in my 3Dfx game system, and wonder if there are any Glide games that will not run on either a Voodoo1 or Voodoo5 5500. I also have a Voodoo II SLI set available, but am not sure this is needed with the Voodoo5.

Thanks!

Hello neurocrash,

All Glide games run with 3dfx Voodoo cards.
It is not necessary to have a Voodoo5 5500 in your PC but it will be better because the drivers are updated more regularly and it's more powerfull.
What are your hardwares (motherboard, processor, OS installed, ...)?

Regards,
Trevor

This system is as follows:

Gigabyte GA-6BX7 Motherboard
Intel Pentium III Coppermine 1ghz CPU
100mhz FSB, so CPU underclocked to 750mhz
768mb RAM
Sound Blaster Pro 2 ISA sound card
Matrox Millenium G200 AGP VGA card
Diamond Monster 3D PCI (3Dfx Voodoo1)
Diamond Monster 3D II PCI x2 SLI (3Dfx Voodoo2)
Intel Pro 1000MT PCI NIC
Dual Boot Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows98SE

I have two types of cards in the system because there are some games like Whiplash that I cannot get running on anything but the Voodoo1, and others like Carmageddon that won't run properly on the Voodoo1, or benefit from higher resolution.

I doubt the current PSU can handle the load of a Voodoo5, but was thinking about replacing it and swapping with the Voodoo2 cards.

It has been a long time since I used the Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 cards, so aside from the oldest DOS games with built-in Glide that didn't use OVL files, I am trying to remember if there are any other generations of games that are specific to Voodoo1 and Voodoo2.

Thanks

yes, there are games like that, for example esoteria (will run only on voodoo1) and incubation (will run only on voodoo1/2/rush, unless a modded file is used, but that causes some issues on it's own). maybe more.

The 3Dfx Helppage and Game Guide / Voodoo3/4/5 enviromental variables

Yes, Incubation was one of the games I was thinking of for Voodoo1.

So the question is, are there any games that only run on Voodoo2?

Thanks

I know the 3dfx vr of MW2 will only play on a voodoo1
I think there is a patch for the voodoo2

other then that the v5 and v1 will play any game glide
the voodoo5 will do better tho

The 3D accelerated version of Mechwarrior 2 is one that I will probably avoid, and would instead use the software rendered version. As I recall, the 3D version has significantly reduced draw distance which adversely affected gameplay. This is all good to know, so I will probably use a Voodoo1 and Voodoo5.

Cheers

if you run into glide problems with the voodoo5 typically running it in Single chip mode for the game fixes it..
