I recently upgraded my system to IMO the max for voodoo 5 (6K). I bought a MSI k7D master mainboard and 2 AMD Athlon MP 2800+ CPU's. So i started Quake 3 and i wanted to try out the SMP funtion (r_SMP 1). The games says to restart so i did (vid_restart and game shutdown and bootup) both result in a freeze before ID logo appears. I know that this doesnt have to do much with videocards, at least i think...but there seems to be a connection between videodrivers and SMP in Quake 3. I read something about the detonator drivers from nVidia that had problems with SMP. Now I also know there's just a few people with 2 CPU's but please can somebody tell me whats wrong? Amigamerlin i know you have 2 MP 2600's. Maybe you can try it. Or maybe you know if Amigamerlin 3.0 supports SMP or not? Atm i have no other videocard here to test. And i have tried bith win XP and win 98 se. I hope somebody knows this problem.....

I am not familiar with the commmands of Quake 3 could you explain what the command does?

It enables the second CPU.

From doing research on google I quickly found this solution

"most of us have found you have to enable the /realtime flag with r_smp 1 to get SMP to work. Unfortunately, it drops your fps by 20% or so instead of increasing it. I don't believe the detonator2 drivers are SMP equipped. So, here's the setting you need in your shortcut, but honestly, I'd skip it for now.

C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe /c start /realtime D:\Games\Quake_III_Arena\quake3.exe +set r_smp 1

Season directory information to taste..."

That might help. I believe this freezing has nothing to do with the video card. I just think more people with nvidia cards have posted this problem because back then alot of people had nvidia cards compared to ATI cards.

WTF now i cant even get my 6K running in this system anymore!!! [V]

This fuction is simply broken (it was never finished or optimised by ID Software) in the Quake III engine. It has nothing to do with drivers.

As a matter of fact it does work. Obi-Wan Kenobi has it running on a dual Athlon mp 2200+ and a Radeon 9700 pro. I read lots of **** about incompatibility with early detonator drivers (TNT 2 etc. ) It was fixed by nVidia later so i thought maybe the voodoo 5 drivers are the problem. Unfortunately nobody uses two CPU's except for Amigamerlin who "doesnt do Quake 3" [}:)]

I also tried realtime..... it comes a little closer but still freezes in the ID logo screen [V]

Wasn't amigamerlin more a UT guy? Hence the fastvoodoo2 wallpaper ;).
I like UT more, because of the better speed, and because of the larger maps.
Start War and peace will be appreciated
