Hi guys, I was wondering -just for curiosity- why there's no D3D drivers for Voodoo2 on Windows 2000/XP. Anyone know?

ggab

i think:
because voodoo1&2 only support the Glide/OGl API. And D3D support is (if it is supported) from the main Video Apapter (the another video card).

This driver under Win2k exists (would work under XP also)
This is "the Voodoo2(tm) Driver kit: Beta 1.00.00"
You will find it here :
http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo2.htm
3dfx Reference Drivers
Voodoo2 Win2K Drivers
24 Sep 1999 3dfx Voodoo2 1000 V1.00.00b

If you read the readme.txt, you will understand the problems...

The Readme.txt file says:

QuoteNOTE :  Windows 2000 does not support the passthrough feature of the
Voodoo2. The card must be installed in the same way as you would install
a secondary 2d/3d board in a multi-monitor setup.

Does this mean, that the Voodoo2 is used as a 2D/3D video device?. In other words, do I have to plug the monitor cable into the Voodoo2 only? [xx(]

QuoteMicrosoft was not able to complete their support for "Detached Devices"
in time for public releases of Windows 2000 Professional. Since Voodoo2
needs "detached device" support to run as a 3D only board, it will not
run in this fashion on Windows 2000 Professional.

Does Windows XP support it? -detached devices-

Heres another driver.

very strange, this driver is for voodoo2, it claims to be for Win2k/XP.

As you open the package, you can see several direct 3d files. Now, I think that this driver is either not working or its misplaced. Any1 volunteers to test it for me? plz plz plz :D

I know that testing drivers can be dangerous for your Operating System and I don't want to mess up my windows.

Of course! ;). I'll give it a try this weekend and let you know how it worked. It's a pitty, because with this driver set you only have D3D. I wanna have it all, D3D and Glide/OpenGL [:p]

Sanek

there is an alternative to having d3d voodoo2 support, but I don't know if this will work, it should work if you have DirectX 7 or maybe even 8, but 9...

download, install and enable DXGL Wrapper by Realtech VR

At this point, it will try to emulate DirectX by using openGL drivers of your primary video card.

Here's the part that I'm not sure about.

Try doing this:
go to start >>> run
type "regedit"

in your registry editor window, go to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DirectDraw\

try to find this key: EnumerateAttachedSecondaries
if your see it, change its value to 1

if you don't, try creating it (Right M Click >>> New >>> DWORD Value).

This is just speculation, but maybe now, it will work. I'd say this process is completely safe as long as you follow these instructions and don't mess with other values.

As for the Original 3dfx Ref Driver Set V 1.0b, It will only work if you have 2 monitors.

strange... I've read about these drivers and the description says they only support Glide/OpenGL. Now I'm very confused, they looked like they had some D3D files...

found another win2k voodoo2 driver, seems to support direct3D only, not the one posted @ falconfly ??different version??

It is possible to edit the driver setup to install 3dfxzone's glide/opengl drivers (they are just commented out)

anyway, heres the link: http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/2241/3dfx-Voodoo2-Display-Driver-1.4.html

Of course but if you need Glide/OpenGl, d/l an other driver running only Glide and OpenGl under XP and install it also.
You will use 2 drivers sets simply.

Not exactly, would be possible with 1 monitor but the workaround is rather a pain - if i remember and i never tried it on my Win2k machine - so be careful...
Anyway, this is the way how a Voodoo 2 can works in 2D in a multi-monitor Windows 2000 system.

QuoteThere is no DirectX or OpenGL acceleration

This is not the solution I'm looking for. So, there's no hope for us to have D3D acceleration? [V]

Sanek

actually, there is D3D acceleration but only with DirectX 5? or 6.

Most games would not run.

The fact is... unless a separate driver set is created to allow win2k support for "detached devices", there is no way to make this work (unless someone writes a program that translates all D3D function calls to OpenGL function calls
