hi all, any ideas appreciated..

am upgrading a mate's pc, from AMDK6-2 & dead MSI ms5159 mobo to a new asrock k7vt2, duron 1.3ghz 200 fsb,128mb pc100 sdram taken from previous system, 3dfx voodoo3 agp card also from previous sys..

problem is the pc beeps 3 times on power up, pauses & another 3 & so on, also nothing appears on the screen, does not POST,boot up etc., only sign of life is power supply & cpu fan spinning..

i have read elsewhere that the k7vt2 has problems accepting memory?. i have the fsb jumper set on correct pins for 200fsb. The k7vt2 bios is AMI & 3 beeps points to memory errors, i have tried various branded modules & no change??

any suggestions greatly received.

asrock? I hope that's a model and not a brand. Have you checked your manual to assure that you have the correct settings for the ram?  Also, are you sure the motherboard supports 3.3v signaling in the AGP slot? This could be an issue, I think.

Asrock is a brand and not a model.
The Agp is universal and supports Agp 3.3v/1.5v ; 4X, 2X and 1X.  

Okay then, read the manual, and find out what settings you should have for the RAM, although most of the time these settings are automatically detected

the asrock mobo takes agp 3.3v, i think the card is voodoo3 2000 agp, looks identical to piccie of the 2000 on this site;am using known working crucial memory sticks. has anyone used this m'board?asrock k7vt2 viakt266a chipset.

try a bios reset.
does the manual state what those beeps mean? can you try it with other memory? perhaps with another videocard?

Seems rather unusual. You said the beeps indicate a RAM issue, does it state anything more specific? How did the MSI motherboard "die", by power surge or lightning? If so, the ram is also probably trash. The spinning fans indicate that the power supply and motherboard are fine, but somehow the settings might be wrong. Also, are you sure that the ram you are trying is PC100, not PC66? You state that it is, but I'm just checking to be sure. Maybe the ram is not pushed in all the way? Does it state that it requires any "special" sort of ram, like registered or non-ecc or something? I will check the manual later if I have time

hehe, i actually should have thought of that... in the computer hardware store i work, we replace sometimes 8 PSUs a day!!! (and its a small store...)

Can't fault anyone for not thinking it was the P/S because 3 beeps are always a memory problem just like 8 beeps are always a video card problem. That's strange that you got 3 beeps with a P/S problem.

well, when memory gets insufficient power, then it will make errors, and thus start beeping...

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem as detailed here - I recently bought an Asrock K7VT2 with an athlon xp cpu and every time I try and start it up I'm getting no screen and three short beeps.  However, I don't think the problem with mine is a faulty power supply because when I put my old board back in the case it works fine with the same psu.  The guy who sold me the board (who is a friend) told me he suspected it might be a video card issue, but the video card I have, a creative geforce 3 should surely work fine?  I've tried putting different memory in aswell and it seems that nothing works.  I've tried the asrock site for finding out what the beep code means, but they're pretty useless and the manual that came with the motherboard is no better.  Some people say the beeps mean a keyboard error, others memory and others video problems but I really haven't a clue.  Is it possible that the PSU in my case isn't strong enough or something?  Any help is appreciated, thanks for your time!

What is the power rating on your power supply?
The newer AMD CPU's require a minimum 300w P/S.
