I want to be sure of something.

ok ,first, I already bought an used V5 5500 some time ago. When I received it, I was really happy, tried it with 3rd party drivers with all at Max and found that awesome! but the PC froze after 10 min. I removed my audio card ( thinking it was it because I already had prob with it) I rebooted, and when I tried a game. the screen got all messed up and the whole PC was freezing. I tried number of time without success. It was doing this in no AA, 2xS AA, 4xS AA but not in single chip mode. and in single chip, or not, after 10 min, the PC was still frezing. and when I started a game. It was still freezing but sooner. I also tried on a totally different PC and it was the same thing. (P200, 48MB EDO, WIN98SE original drivers)

Ok, now, I got ride of it, (exchanged for free for a brand new MSI GF4 MX440SE-T 64MB DDR with 1 year warranty , my best deal)

Now, I ordered a brand new one sealed with 90 day warranty on it. It maybe was the other card that was defective and the guy got ride of it and it blown when I had it.

But I want to be sure. Is it my mobo that hates the card and fryies it or it was only the card. please help. I really want to have a voodoo 5 5500 but if my mobo kill them :(

- the KT400 doesn't support the Agp 2x, 3.3v ; if you put your V5 on it, that can be really dangerous for the mobo or the gfx card ; i'm surprized that the slot Agp isn't locked

- if you tried your VoodooCard on an P200 and if you have always problems, well your card can be really damaged

your card is or was OC ?

Hi Knuckles, welcome in this forum.

Due to same problem with both hardware systems Athlon and Pentium, i believe that the card is probably defective [:(]. But there is a hope :): this issue is typical when VSA-100 have not enough cooling because one or both the coolers are damaged or old board owner has replaced these improperly (for example leaving much space between VSA and cooling fin).

Finally you must verify that the heat is correctly dissipated and let do us know...[^]

- Nightbird: the Voodoo5 card of Knuckles is a PCI device...so is fully compatible with any motherboard ;)

Bye bye

Nightbird: No, my V5 wasn't overclocked

Glide: I don't have the old one anymore, like I said :"Ok, now, I got ride of it, (exchanged for free for a brand new MSI GF4 MX440SE-T 64MB DDR with 1 year warranty , my best deal)"

I'm currently waiting for the other one (the brand new one) that I've ordered to arrive. I wanted to know if it was my mobo or the used V5 because I don't want to add another V5 and end up with the same result.

You have to be calm and sure: your motherboard supports any PCI video card like...Voodoo5 5500.

Bye bye

try your voodoo5  pci in another machine to check it still works... then check at what speeds you have your pci bus running...

I hope so but, I saw that the PC was freezing (before the card starts to work badly) sometime. Myabe it was because it was about to give up or is that why he sold it [:(!]. I will see this week.

And only hopes ot wont constantly freeze like the other one ...

/off-topic

i was playing a bit of Tactical Ops once, so the voodoo5 had to work quiet hard... suddenly i noticed behind all the gunfire a rattling noise... i then shut down my speakers, and listened for (felt like it anyway) 5 minutes... then i quickly shutdown the computer, opened the case and looked inside... both HSF of my voodoo5 had came off :(

luckily nothing was damaged... i just dont overclock anymore... my voodoo5 is pretty robust, but still to precious to waste... :D

/on-topic: well, the best way imho is to put it in another (older!) computer... even a p2 is good... that way you will know for sure it isnt (or is.. :( ) your motherboard.

let's revive this topic???

I think the prob comes from the Mobo, the V5 is working Perfectly with other systems.

I think I heard about an AMD/VIA patch ,something about PCI settings/problems.... I can't find this patch, any help?

erm, try pci slot number 3? i thought slot number 1 shared something with something on some motherboards (hey! gotta be vague sometimes!)

also, are you sure the pci bus runs at the default 33mhz? have you installed good, stable via chipset drivers? what are the PCI settings in the bios? perhaps relax those a bit.

1st : I tried with all PCI slots

2nd: Bus always has been at the default 33MHz

3rd: Those are the orignal WHQL certified drivers on the Mobo CD

PCI settings? there is only the Bus speed and the IRQ things (PCI/PnP or Legacy ISA)

you probably just ran out of power.  What is the rating of your power supply?  what chipset are you running on the moterboard?  make sure that you have any .inf's for your motherboard installed (especially via 4in1's).  the voodoo line of chips are all 66Mhz parts, PCI overclocked bus speed typically affects network/sound/modem cards first.  You have alot of stuff cramed into that system and the V5 is power hungry especially on the 3.3V rail (which typically comes from the motherboard via a power ic and supplies the AGP slot as well).
Bloody Mess

Knuckles

you should check the 1st post to get the chipset.....

and I have a 300W power supply and I didn't checked his rating.

power used:
-Mobo
-CD burner
-1x 40G BHD
-floppy

4 fans (3 connected on the mainboard on direct to PSU)

and 1 more when the voodoo 5 is connected

for the 4in1, they always are installed (latest versions)
