Posted - 29/01/2011 : 19:29:44 Great news for 3dfx owners ...
3Dfx Voodoo5 5500 PLX is a Pci-E bridged card ! Great performance on benchs.

Have a look on this french topic : http://forum.hardware.fr/hfr/Hardware/2D-3D/topic-voodoo-3dfx-sujet_567660_30.htm#bas
Or view directly this awesome picture of the Voodoo5 5500 PLX : http://images.camarades-pc.fr/N0538873001296321278.jpg

Posted - 05/05/2013 : 03:32:25 Hi Mradu, So you can’t fix this ? Huh, it’s a hassle !

As I said I bought a « Startech PEX1PCI1R for Intel server 1U » converter This item is based on Pericom PI7C9111SL 66 mhz capable chip. The datasheet is very clear about this. Here is a link on the adapter i bougt : http://fr.startech.com/Cartes-Aditionelles-et-Peripheriques/Extension-de-fente/Carte-riser-PCI-Express-vers-PCI-x1-pour-serveur-IPC-Intel-1U~PEX1PCI1R
In my PC, it rans fine and stable, excepted when I did’nt connect correctly the 4 pins power wire as I said before. In the bios I just set the Pci burst lenght to 64 cycles and the Pci-E freq. to 100 or 101 mhz. I tested both on Pci-E 16X and 1X motherboard slots.
For the moment I cannot play with my hardware.
As stated in the datasheet, the chip needs 10% power more @66mhz (740 mW), you could try to set a dissipator on it to improve the cooling.

Posted - 28/04/2013 : 15:16:17 Thanks jix-reggio: I installed my voodoo5 and check it again. Unfortunately the instability is still present, and the PCI-X bus can not be set under 100.
Can you post a link with your PCI 2 PCI-X adapter ? I might order one like yours. Need to see the prices first..
Any news or progress about your project ? |

Posted - 26/03/2013 : 20:47:08 Hmmm looks like I'm gonnna hold off on buying a Geforce GTX! 3:D my money is most certainly going to a PCI-E 8x to PCI-x adapter w/extension cable. |

Posted - 28/12/2012 : 16:05:35 Hello Mradu, for your instable Pericom adapter I suggest to check power wires are firmly connected, check the 4 pins connector of the bridge, it must be completely pushed into the PSU female connector. I experienced problems related to this 4 pins ie : behaviour in 2D OK, but D3D bugs (in dxdiag or in 3dmark). Maybe it can help.
I'm late. A little video with some informations.

Happy new year for all 3dfx community people.

14/02/2013 Special tip for Voodoo2 SLI Owners :
Look at the bridge specs --> pci runs @66mhz ... Priced at 50 euros. This french seller is a good one.

Posted - 22/12/2012 : 10:54:04 I'm following closely your construction. What is ‘in the pipeline’ ?
Can't wait to see the release....oh..December is already here....
Anyway, Grweat work jix-reggio. |

Posted - 12/11/2012 : 22:38:34 Hello, despite many ideas, crysis, lack of money, lack of time
did’nt let me work on my 3dfx. Something is still ‘in the pipeline’ and will be released in December.
SFFT worked hard this year on drivers and tools, I wonder if it would make sense to ask him for an optimized version of Voodoo5 5500 Pci taking advantage of the "pci-e bridged" Cpu <-> Gpu 66 mhz link ?

Posted - 11/10/2012 : 10:34:21 Hello Oschkar,
Yes, your PCI on AGP adapter is very interesting.
I had seen some pictures, waiting for more
and some benches to have an idea of the performances.

Voodoo5 5500 PexTurbo fan :

Edit Hi Oschkar, do you get some pictures and benchs results with the Agp2pci 5 adapter ?

Posted - 10/10/2012 : 11:05:47 Very good work there jix-reggio!
Waiting news for your new version.
I will post some test using my adapter 66MHz.
ps. For the locks using the riser. I recommend disable all the CPU features.
Regards, Oscar. |

Posted - 15/09/2012 : 19:13:15 yes, falling clock PCI-E under 100Mhz was also suggested by Osckhar. Unfortunately the bios didn"t allow me to go under 100Mhz. I will try to go up to 101, 102 Mhz, to see what is happent.
thanks for the info, i will try the adapter asap :)
The construction of your voodoo5 is very "original". I like it a lot :)
Keep up the good work ! |

Dieser deutches freund ist ein sockel A meister, aber der benchmark ist unter Windows 98 getan.
Great bench ! This german friend is a socket A master, but the bench is performed on Windows 98.

Posted - 08/09/2012 : 02:26:59 I just saw that some falconfly's power users had connected their V5500 Agp on Pci or Pci-express mobos via Osckhar AGP 5 adapter (66mhz). It is very interesting. I would like to get more info about these V5500 Agp bridged performances. For example 3dmark2001 results to compare Pci and Agp.
------
Edit : Thanks for M14radu, Oschkar and other participants of this topic who helps me. M14radu, for the unstable pericom adapter, if pin 49 masked, unmask it because it works well without(you use the same adapter than me, if I am not mistaken), then I suggest you to try in order and in the Motherboard bios: 1 / releasing slightly of the Ram in the integrated cpu controller (because the lock is very similar to a freeze of ram) 2 / falling clock PCI-E to 95 mhz (but I think your bios will not allow it) so try to set 101 (or 102) mhz. 3 / try with a latency of 64 clocks for Pci bus-mastering.
Question: Does the HDD work a lot at the time of locking in the test Car chase? If this is the case, you should improve disk access.
As an explanation for the 66 mhz instability, I suggest it can may be due to the fast 'back-to-back' Pci transactions used by the V5500 pci to improve the bandwidth, like the Agp V5500 uses the SBA. |
