Voodoo 2 driver Fastvoodoo- cannot get it to work

Hello,

I'm new on this forum, but before posting I checked other threads about my problem, but couldn't find the answer.

Situation: whenever I tried running a glide game (glquake, quake2 3dfxopengl) or the test, the computer freezes, I can only get back to desktop with ctrl+alt+delete.

My config: AMD Sempron 1,8 Ghz, 1 Gigs of RAM, Ati Radeon 9600 Xt 256 mb ram, Creative Voodoo2.

I tried older(last reference) and newer(Fastvoodoo gold) drivers as well, I have even overwritten glide2x and glide3x with radeon compatibility drivers but nothing seemed to work.

The only difference between older drivers and newer ones for me was that if the Fastvoodoo 4.0 gold was installed, the desktop did not get all fuzzy and hazy after a game had crashed.

Any help would be a huge miracle to me, thanks in advance!

Thank you for the answer, I thought this forum was dead for sure :) I've tried that driver, it didn't work however.

Somehow I think I'm having a problem with older drivers not uninstalling properly......(I just clicked unistall in device manager) and that may cause the problem.

So if there is nothing more to be done driver wise, is there a method to make sure that the older drivers have been "annihilated" from the system? I saw some guys trying to fix it from the registry but I do not know where to look......

Again, thanks for your answers

Update:

I somehow managed to get koolsmokey's version working. It runs fine with unreal and the donut test is good. However, when I run glQuake or Quake 2 in 3dfxopengl it freezes after a few minutes brutally, I have to reset. Any ideas ?

fastvoodoo2 should have its own uninstaller (add or remove programs),make sure its uninstalled from there.

modified driver: http://helppage.3dfx.sk/200762465834_Voodoo2.rar
should be a bit more stable (original memory mapper added to koolsmoky's driver).you dont need to reinstal, just find fxptl.sys in your system and overwrite it with the one from the new archive.

make sure your voodoo2 cards are not overheating-it seems like they can get quite a bit hotter when running in newer systems..also,for quake you should try the original minigl: http://www.falconfly.de/minigl.htm

Thank you for the tips! It could be the heating, however, it only freezes when I run quake 1 and 2. When I play Unreal 1, it never does....strange.

I will check out those links you have posted, thank you again!

You said, some of the old zombies are still here. What happened to the rest of this community? Is there no longer interest for this wonderful 3dfx world ?

there will always be some interest, but hardcore fans, collectors and retro gamers is all you will get today,"standard" pc users don't have 3dfx cards in their pcs anymore (well I can imagine there is still a decent number of p3/voodoo3 based machines out there, but I doubt their owners are interested in their pc hardware-they use them just for some work and internet browsing)..and even those hardcore guys are dropping out slowly-toying around with hardware can be tremendous fun as long as you are a student, but as soon as you have work and/or family you will start to have other things on mind.and not everybody is comfortable with a weird life that consist of doing hardware support during the graveyard shift for a living and fooling around with tons of oddball hardware at home while providing support on forums in your free time (just like a certain member of this forum with short two letter-two number nickname that is nearing his thirties waay faster than he would like to :D )..

everything that has a beginning has an end ;)
