I m so glad I found this place and it brings so much good memories from the glory days of 3dfx.

A bit about me :

I m 40 years old (ouch) and I m a gamer at heart.
My hobbies are also divided with music playing and composing (synth), a movie/DVD addict and cyclist(summer).

Now back to my gaming recollection.
I was initiated to electronic gaming in the 80 s at the local arcade, and became an avide gamer up til the early 90 s.
After a hiatus of 6 years of peace, my girlfriend (at that time) bought a PC in 1996. Since I had no idea what to do with a computer, I went to the newpapers stand I bought the PC gamer (1st game award issue).
So, slowly I started to play and learn with Quake and Red Alert !!!
3 years later I was a part time games and harware specialist at a computer store. (and kept my regular job at day)
I worked 2 years in that store, discover the joy of LAN party and became close friend with my co-workers. These where happy gaming times.
I remember in particular a LAN at my house with 5 other gamers and their PC, playing UT with our Voodoos, a blast it was.
It all came to an end in december 2000, 3dfx closed to my stupefaction, PC accelerator closed, and I resigned from my part time job. (it was no fun anymore at the store)

A couple of year later I sold my beloved Voodoo 5 with the box to collect some funds for a Radeon 8500.
I tried to avoid NVIDIA like the plague for their corporate stance after the demise of 3dfx. (Fortunatly ATI make great gaming cards since the Radeon, so it wasn't to hard)

Now today I have a great machine that I builted (Athlon 64 3000 + ATI X800XL + 1 GIG ram Dual Ch.)and I still play PC games from time to time but something is missing............... HAAAA I know Vintage Gaming.

So this week I bought a Voodoo 5 on Ebay (and a V2 for fun, and I m planning to build a second PC for vintage gamming.
something like a P III 800, Voodoo 5, 256 megs, PC 133 and Win98 se.

And finally I found this place, and that's the icing on the cake.
All those thread about 3dfx harware what a good timming !!!!!
It reminded me a lot the original 3dfx forum.

Anyway sorry about the long post and my bad english (french is my native language)
Hi again to everybody !!!!

@Steph3dfx,

Welcome to this great forum :D

I also have a great affection for collecting and playing the older (retro) games, along with collecting 3dfx cards, it's one of my favourite hobbies (200+ games) ;)

After seeing glquake & Tomb Raider running on a best freinds computer, I immediately went the next day and bought a Diamond Monster 3D for $399 Canadian and have been a 3dfx fanatic ever since :D

My current 3dfx systems:

#1. Pentium 233mhz, Voodoo 1 pci, 64mb system ram.

#2. Pentium 2 333mhz, Voodoo Basnshee agp, 128mb system ram.

#3. Pentium 3 650mhz, Voodoo3 3500 agp, 256mb system ram.

#4. Pentium 3 1000mhz, Voodoo 5500 agp, 256mb system ram.

#5. Athlon XP 2000mhz, Voodoo 5500 agp, 512mb system ram.

#6. Athlon 64 3400, Radeon X850 XT-PE & Voodoo 5500 pci, 1gb system ram.

Hi Dear All,
I 've been thinking about build a 3dfx system for old time game, but I can't make up my mind what CPU speed should I go with.
I have lots DOS games and I am afraid those game will run like crazy if I use "too advanced" CPU.
Can someone give me advices?

Thank you very much!!

QuoteHi Dear All,

1. The "advanced" CPUs have an i486 emulator, so that they can run DOS applications and the OS itself without speed problems. This applies to the x86 architecture (Pentium, K6, Athlon...). I'm not sure if the 64-bit processors (Athlon64, 64-bit Pentium4) can run DOS applications, but if they do - they will most likely have an i486 emulator, too. The emulation provides also the 640k RAM for DOS, so you'll be able to run old software without any problems.
My recommendation is to use an Win98 based system with less than 512MB RAM as Win95/98 and the older versions can't handle correctly more RAM. Any 32-bit Athlon or Pentium would work for you. Probably you should choose and old model to save some money.

2. You should post a new topic if you want to ask a question not releated to the one you're posting in.
AthlonXP 2400+@2700+ 2.22GHz/256k/148FSB, 1024MB RAM DDR400@296 Samsung+Kingmax, GB-7N400L, SAMSUNG 80GB/7200/8MB/ATA133, ATi Radeon 9800SE 128-bit, 128 MB (8x1) 380/330MHz, 2xVooDoo2 12MB 90/110MHz - Skywell Magic 3D II + JoyMedia Apollo 3Dfast II

@4eRNoBiL,
Thank you for the detail tech advice!

Sorry that I did not post new topic to ask question, I were too exciting when I saw Voodoo5 built lots of " Old System " and can't wait to ask....
