hello, i'm having a small problem with NFS: Porsche Unleashed. as recommended, I have Amigamerlin's 2.9 drivers installed (+ latest mesafx) for voodoo3 2000. by default, PU launches in d3d mode (yes, even with voodoo's, except voodoo2) and i must say my card performs very well in this mode. however, since we all know that voodoos go best with glide, i did a small trick and launched the game in glide mode. and to my surprise the performance was worse compared to d3d mode! could someone explain me this? i would really like to find out what is wrong here.

in 3dsetup.ini, instead of using 'dx', use 'voodoo2' string. for example, in my case (voodoo3) by default the entry is 'CARD_3Dfx Voodoo3 /M:dx /I' (d3d mode), in order to start the game in glide, i would use 'CARD_3Dfx Voodoo3 /M:voodoo2 /I'. the only voodoo cards that start the game in glide by default are voodoo and voodoo rush, all others start in d3d by default. but definately, the performance is better in d3d mode, maybe this is why they left it the way it is.

Ree

Nightbird? any explanation/fix you could provide on this?

there is a VOODOOZ.DLL or something like this in Porche's folder (tell me details of those files)

then, with REGEDIT search the GAME's entry, and locate the render's folder key... (i can't remember it)
i guess, CURRENT USER / SOFTWARE....
there, u can find the exact render filename in a KEY, something like "voodooz.dll" somewhere.

//i can't tested it right now

Ree

nah, i understand it uses the voodoo2.dll. what i don't understand is why i get low fps in glide compared to d3d...

secretfj

coz the game is optimized for DirectX?

i played high stake using V2SLI(in Glide Mode) and GeForce 2 MX(in DirectX mode)
i have to say that they performance just the same...
No way a 3DFX collector...just a 3DFX die Hard Player~~

let the VooDoo Roars!!

baskapteijn - you didn't get the topic correct, right?

I've been playing porsche unleashed with bdreams software on my V3 2000 and it was nice and fast on my p2-333. It's similar as mesafx but tuned for NFS only. the file is called Bestnfs.  You should be able to find it here www.bdreams.012webpages.com, if not let me know I think I still have it over here.

Nightbird

Sorry, it's not similar to MesaFx.

Nightbird, you should be right.  I'm not an IT.  To me it's all drivers and libraries throwing in games path.

Ree, I tried your trick to play in Glide and I end up with same result.  I have a Voodoo 5, so I tried to add it there(v5 was not out when game was released) but as you might guess, it crashed.  So I changed the V3 card like you did and it become a little laggy.  Makes me wondering if this game is using both vsa chips to run?  Even with mesafx ?  Now Could it be that it needs a newer voodoo2z.dll, as there is none in mesafx? Or mesafx drivers doesn't need this dll?

I have voodoo2z 2002 version 8192.16.35.5942 and glide3x from mesafx 6.1. It's fast and clean in dx, and slower too when forcing glide.  Maybe I'll try to copy glide3x.dll in drivers folder and change dx by glide3x in 3dsetup.ini, instead of voodoo2.
