Title: ATTN: Amigamerlin & Koolsmokey - Color Banding V6K
Post by: Crash on 29 September 2003, 00:40:33
Greetings,

I was wondering if you would consider a fix for the Windows98 drivers that would attend to the Voodoo5 6000 color banding issue that occurs in 32-Bit color mode, as described in the article from Colorless:

http://www.users.on.net/triforce/illuminate/v56kprobs.html

I personally use Windows98 for my V6K since in WindowsXP the refresh rate gets stuck at 60hz, none of my gameport controllers can work outside of 98, and some games simply won't even begin to install in XP.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Aloha,

Crash!

Hi,

The color banding issue is well known. The problem is that V5 6000 uses analog SLI and it was necessary to divide the final RGB result by 2 in 4xFSAA. If the division was not done then the final RGB out put would be 1.4V, double the allowed .7Volts.

Divide by 2 in binary is shift right, so your 8 bit number becomes 7 bits only.
b'1111 1111 becomes b'0111 1111. If you load the traditional 8 bit Gamma table you will run into trouble. The Gamma table has to be computed for 7 bits with 8th bit MSB ignored.

I believve the problem was fixed already in AM 3.0

hank are you speaking of AM 3.0 for win9x, which hasn't been released yet? if not, note that he's using windows 98se.

The workaround is in the AM3.0 win2k/xp driver set for D3D and Glide. OpenGL gets fixed for free because it runs on top of Glide3x.

Copy the AM3.0 Glide files to Win9x for the benefits.

before you set them up, copy glide2x.dll and glide3x.dll from the driver2k directory. i cannot tell you how to do it without reinstalling, as my voodoo is taking an extended vacation

when the sun goes down, the music turns up...

Windows XP Pro|Athlon XP 1800+|GeForce2(temporarily, for compatibility purposes)|MSI K7T266-A|768MB DDR 2700 RAM|SonicEdge 5.1 Sound Card

you can just replace your current glide2x.dll and glide3x.dll files with the ones in the amigamerlin 3.0 driver pack. back them up to be save...
