Title: I need a new mobo for my Voodoo 5500 AGP card
Post by: calvin on 13 August 2005, 06:07:49
I read the other thread and was just wondering, will a MSI KT3 Ultra2 Ultra 2 MS-6380E AMD Motherboard be ok?

Well can anyone suggest another card that will be compatible with my Voodoo 5500 AGP card?

Abit KG7 is good, but it don't support 333FSB..
for Epox, the KT266 series boards always have leaking capacitors, that's no good, but seems the newer boards has get rid of that

I should have said this earlier I'm a dolt when it comes to building computers. I hire a tech guy to make up/fix my PC's. He took the Voodoo card out when the mobo fried and he says he is happy to make me up a games PC with it if I can find a compatible motherboard. But I need really specific instructions as to what motherboard to get, make model and type and hopefully a link to where I can buy one. I tried to search the forum but most recomendations seemed to be for a Voodoo 6000 and I wasn't sure if it was the same.

I know nothing about computers, I just like the way some of my favorite games look in glide.

I need to know a link with the exact right one to buy or be told the exact make and model so I can try and pick one up on Ebay if they aren't still available.

I really appreciate the help but I'm still confused. So the MSI KT3 Ultra2 isnt' good?

When you say "Abit KG7 is good, but it don't support 333FSB.." Does that mean it be ok or not?

"Epox, the KT266 series boards always have leaking capacitors, that's no good, but seems the newer boards has get rid of that"

Which model/make would I need to pick up specifically to get one without problems? And again sorry for all the stupid.

its sorta small but the shuttle ss51g has been tested by shuttle to take the v5 5500 agp card, nice thing about them is they will take up to a 3.06 p4 at 533 fsb, the board itself takes 333ddr, i got mine from shuttle store off ebay for about 120.00 mobo, case,

Actually, MSI KT3 Ultra2 is a good mobo for Voodoo5. MSI KT3 Ultra2 supports 333 MHz FSB, which means you can use newer (faster) processor. The rule of thumb is like this: the higher the FSB numbers a mobo has, the newer processor it can support. For instance, with 333 MHz FSB, you can use AMD Barton 3000+ processor.

But here's the catch: Voodoo5 is only compatible with AGP 2x slot (3.3 volt), which is not supported anymore in newer mobos. For example, (if I recall correctly) 400 MHz FSB motherboards don't support AGP 2x anymore.

In fact, as far as I know, there are only two types of Mobo that support 333 MHz FSB and AGP 2x slot: they are ASUS A7V333 and MSI KT3 Ultra. By the way, A7V333 has compatibility problems if you're using Voodoo5 6000 (the second post on this thread (http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1981)).

Abit KG7 only supports 266 MHz FSB, so theoritically, the highest processor you can use is Thoroughbred 2600+; the highest Thoroughbred version which has 266 MHz FSB. Here is a chart (http://www.thedigerati.us/info/amdcpuchart.html#xp) describing the FSB speed of various AMD processors.

Note that I'm talkin' about theoritical support; the actual support is usually *lower*. For example, Epox 8KTA3 has 266 MHz FSB, so it should be able to support T-bred 2600+ processor, but in practice, it can only support Palomino 2100+.  The KG7 itself only supports 2.1 GHz AMD processors, despite the fact it has 266 MHz FSB.

So in reality, processor support does NOT depend on FSB speed alone, but also depends on other things, like the BIOS of the motherboard.

Depends on your needs; if you really  want to use the Voodoo5 with the fastest processor around, then you better choose either ASUS A7V333 or MSI KT3 Ultra 2.

As for myself, I'd rather use Epox 8KTA3. Why? Because it has ISA slot, so I can put ISA soundcards like SoundBlaster AWE32 or AWE64. Thus, I can play DOS games (booting in pure DOS) without problems. See, PCI soundcards suck in DOS games.
