Post by: NeoRAGERx on 12 October 2004, 17:42:04

Take a look here :

There is a file named Voodoomovie, this is probably your best bet...

just tried the program voodoo movie..it works on WinXP with FV 4.6 (Glide3X.dll version 3.03.00.0667)
seems the program won't do the MPEG4 decoding itself, another decoder is needed. I personally use FFDSHOW Alpha 12, Oct 2004 (with SSE2 Optimization)<-- it have better playback speed than the original DivX/XviD decoder..(so a fairy slow machine can benefited from it)

the thing VoodooMovie does is to make use of the 3D capability of the 3D Card to provide Full Screen Playback in better quality and smoother image. I think it can somehow accelerate the playback because the CPU don't need to spare some extra power to do the playback besides decoding

what i tried is a XviD encoded video.. no lag and very smooth 1024X768 playback..I am impressed

I even tried this to play the HDTV files on microsoft page..it just lag, lag and lag~~(it's expected as my CPU is not fast and V2 don't have HDTV decoder)

P.S. Don't use WMP9/8, use the old 6.4 instead
you can call it in windows XP by clicking "Start->Run" and type "mplayer2", then hit enter..

Well, no i don't change my username here. ;)
The first (here) was always Nightbird.
The second was enregistered later in order to protect it even if sometimes i use it.

ok, another kind of testing.. playing RMVB using Voodoo Movie
how? voodoo movie won't work with RM player...
but with a codec, everything can be done
get it here : http://www.free-codecs.com/

the name of the codec is Real Alternative (v 1.8)
i used it together with voodoomovie .. without VDM, the movie plays fine(no lag and not very smooth either)
with VDM, the screen is a bit more smooth(higher quality) but with some lag occured...(99% sure due to VDM as without VDM, no lag occurs)
maybe i will use some other program (like MediaPlayer Classic) to play RM (or good quality RMVB like the one i tried) while using VDM to play AVI files~~

@secretfj
You're a sacred tester :D
I use MediaPlayer Classic and in absolute terms, it's really excellent. :)

my pleasure:D

the effect of VDM is especially obvious for VCD Playback, for AVI it's fine too...
I am testing if different Glide version will have some effect too..

Another try on VDM:
as my sister's display card is out of order, so i installed my old S3 Trio 64V2 to her computer, but u know, this card don't have any performance and it can't play MPEG4/RM smoothly (just like slideshow), so i spare one of my V2 from my V2 SLI and put it into my sister's computer.
and i install FV 4.0XP gold and VDM.
i discovered that no matter how old ur primary display card is, all stuffs can be played smoothly and with good video quality in full screen once u have VDM and a voodoo card. seems VDM is a kind of program that intercept the DirectShow commands to the primary card and put them to the V2 and run. (800X600, Triple Buffer, Bilinear filtering, 24bit palette(spelling?))<- It's not a SLI, just one V2 12MB
getting impressed again~~
(maybe next challenge is to get a voodoo1 to have a try~~)

P.S. now i am thinking of getting her a Voodoo 3 as it's not expensive while have very good 2D/3D (her old card is a Radeon 7000 PCI)..

Well, a Radeon even 7000 has some advantages on the Voodoo 3.
In absolute terms a Voodoo 4 would be a better choice (32 mo, large textures...) than a Voodoo 3 but if you need absolutely a Pci, the card will be more expensive.

Actually no, as it have AGP slot (in fact it's a K7VT2), a AGP card would be much better. but u know, it's hard (really hard in Hong Kong) to get a cheap card which can support Direct Show smoothly (even a Oxygen VX1 can't, i tried before).. so i think of V3 now..
V4/V5 is very hard to find in Hong Kong(i haven't seen a single 2nd hand V4 yet)
for under USD$10 u can have a AGP display card, it's my aim for my sister's computer.(and i dislike SiS 6326, Matrox MGA 200, Riva 128/TNT, S3 Savage, nor ATi Rage)

In my setup (v2 sli MM), the movie goes better in my onboard card than in the v2... Theres way too much lag between the frames, and the movie plays almost like a slideshow.
I'm using VoodooMovie (full, I guess) v2.1, w/ glide3x 3.03.00.670 (proper to v2 SLI MM)
Lowering resolution gives a bit of framerate, but still unplayable.
I'm using DivX 5.11, and under SiS530 the movie goes very fair (not perfect, but what can I expect from a K6/2 550 w/64Mo?).
Next step would be to give a try on the FFDSHOW package. What does that SSE/SSE2 optimization mean? I mean, would I use that optimizations if I use this in such a system like mine?..

K6/2 don't have SSE/SSE2, so you don't need those optimizations
