Title: Best Mods for V5500 PCI
Post by: LW_Hearse on 26 May 2004, 08:59:28
Hi,

I'm wondering about what people feel are the best mods for a v5500 pci. In terms of bios, cooling, settings and any other factors. As far as cooling size of heatsinks is a factor. I don't want to go too large.

What do you think?

Thanks [?]:D

What is your RAM vendor and speed? Speed is usually the last digit of the number, somthing like TC6 for 6ns RAM. To convert ns to MHz, divide 1000 by the time in ns, so this is 1000/6ns=166.67MHz. This speed is spec, depending on manufacturer it can go higher. Hyundai can go as high as 200MHz [:p]

Hi,

Good question, Where would I find these numbers? I know the card itself came from Hong Kong.

the calculation is actually

1/6ns=166.66Mhz
6 nanoseconds is .000000006 seconds (6e-9)
(1/.000000006s=166666666.66Hz) <- notice the Hz and not the MEGAHz...

Hi again,

The vendor of the chips is Toshiba and there are a string of numbers( can't read em clearly without pulling the card out, disconnecting fans etc etc) followed by T-60

Salute! ( that's what us red baron players do)

I was thinking of going with tennmac stealth v3 coolers to replace the stock units. I really don't want to invade on the space of the other slots if possible but am open to suggestions regarding cooling.

Thanks

@bloodworm: It all depends on how much of a smartass you want to act like. Technically, my way works, because I stated that the time was in ns, 1/6 gives you .16667, you need to convert the top or the bottom number. If I had stated 1000/6s, it would be a completely different story. I was simply simplifying a long string of conversions (ns->s, s->Hz, then Hz->MHz) into one equation (ns->MHz)

You have 6ns RAM, which is 166 MHz. This card really isn't worth modding, without some serious attention to RAM cooling, not GPUs.

HI,

serious attention huh? more than just putting heatsinks on em which I would've done?

Most likely. Sorry, I was in a bit of a hurry. RAM vendors other than Hyundai don't tend to get much higher than spec speed without artifacts, without complete mods or even ramsinks. Putting new heatsinks on will certainly give you better performance overall, as these cards tend to run hot due to 3dfx's infamous gouping of thermal adhesive, I wish I'd taken pics of mine when I did it. But without a RAM mod, only expect to get around 170~180MHz without artifacts.

LW_Hearse,
The easist way to cool that baby is just to get a couple of cpu fans you are no longer using ( i used my old athlon fans) and attach them to the back of the card. One fan behind each VSA chip.  I was able to go to 190 w/out artifacts with that simple, yet effective mod!! :D
